PHIL'S COMMENTS
The Second week of the new season had the foibles of the fixture computer throw up some extremely tasty ties. The weather outside had people scrambling for warmth and venues were busy.
First match saw the Phoenix Knights go on tour from Heap Bridge and visit the St. Mary’s Social Club Radcliffe to play the B’s, with an excellent first week result the Knights had some confidence within the team but the B’s are a well fancied dark horse for the highest honours this season and overcome the visitors with a score of 48-41.
SunDial Walmersly Rd had the PackHorse Affetside visiting in what Helen, Skipper of the harem, described as the battle for the wooden spoon, a description that could be premature and disputed by last seasons runners up (see report below), both sides played well but Sue has had the PackHorse on a spell of revision and they pulled away in the second half to take the tie with a score of 39-49.
What was tipped to be match of the week with the top two finishers of last season playing at the Rose and Crown Starling turned out to be a harsh lesson, dealt out to the runners up by the champions Radcliffe Cricket Club.
Phil Dodd’s men arrived early un-nerving some members of the home team and Phil elected to go first, this week it proved a crucial decision. Scoring on there first question, the Cricketers also picked up a bonus when the Rose could not recall the current P.D.C. darts world champion Adrian Lewis. Question two saw both teams score but question three saw the home side lose out again when Cadfael wasn’t recognised and again snapped up for a bonus. Question four had the Cricketers wrack up there first of five full houses on the night and the Rose missed there wrongly worded on the sheet question on which Norfolk was the answer when the question asked for a city but as both teams were a county out with the cities chosen it was left as that, Scores 2-10.
Round two individuals with categories of Civil Partners, National Walks, Banned Novels and Asterisms saw the visitors score on all and pick up a bonus on the first category as Bob missed the late Stephen Gately’s civil partnership.
The Rose scored with the second but missed the difficult home banned novels question when Alice in Wonderland was missed as being banned in China!, difficult choice of Lee. With both teams scoring on the last the round score was 4-9 for totals of 6-19.
Round Three had both teams stumped on a well worded Harry Potter question first off, the home side managed to wake up this round and took a full house but the Cricketers dropped a further question when the all white Orpington Hen was missed as a native of Bromley Kent however someone else could not recall it’s name either and the bonus went begging again, round score 8-4 and totals of 14-22. Round four stink round had a theme of Joneses, the Cricketers hesitated only on the boxer Roy Jones but then took there third full house, the Rose were stumped on there own boxer Leroy and stuck for two. Round score 2-8 for halftime totals of Rose and Crown 16 Radcliffe Cricket Club 31.
Round six saw the only question missed by the Rose and the Cricketers of Phil Dodd, Tony Kaye, Mark Dobson and Ken Jones pick up the bonus point by recognising Elmer Bernstein for a round score of 6-9 and totals of 22-40. Round six two part questions had the home side knowing only a maximum four pointer round would raise there score and chances of a result. However the first question saw the Rose having to take the two pointer on Gruel and the Cricketers went for two also, the Rose went for four on the second and missed the Cricketers picked up a bonus one point, but they also missed there own for two and the Rose also missed an either or decision for a bonus. Question three saw the Rose score a four and the Cricketers go for a safe two. With both teams going for safe two pointers on the last questions the round score was 8-7.
Round seven second individual round had categories of Second World War eagles, Royal Duchies, Wings and Verdi’s Shakespearian Opera’s. First question saw the Rose fail to recognise the German name for the opening day of the Battle of Britain, the Cricketers missed the bonus also. Second questions were both answered. Both third questions were missed as Batwing sleeve and Gull wing doors flew by both sides. Both Kieran and Phil Dodd answered the opera questions successfully (more by last minute luck on the Cricketers side).
Round eight had someone else and Bob dispute the opening answer on the Rose side….with someone else knowing that the now stopped Victoria clock at Salisbury dock Liverpool was the clock the sailors used to set their time by but Bob was right in his answer… not used, of the clock on the Liver building, instantly snapped up for a bonus point. With the home side dropping the “regicides” final answer also, the Cricketers signed off with a full house for a round score of 4-9. Final Score of Rose and Crown Starling 38 Radcliffe Cricket Club 62 and team of the week goes to Radcliffe Cricket Club.
The home side took consolation with the beer leg and have started planning for a spoonerism at the presentation night.
Ramsbottom Cricket Club had the Rose and Crown Rammy making there way down the hill for a belated first fixture of the season and a purring Taylor’s Tigers of the Rose took charge in the first two rounds with total scores of 2-9 and 4-15 but the Cricketers steadily came back and wore the Rose and Crowns lead down and grabbed points wins in other rounds to make a good start to their own season ending with a single point win of 42-41, most weeks this would have been well good enough for match of the week but it was pipped by the match below.
Final match this week has the Holcombe Derby starring with the Hare and Hounds hosting the Shoulder of Mutton, Yosemite Sam reports:-
Second week for the Hare and Hounds, with two of the party making it back from there late summer retreat and another who managed to escape from Carlisle, had them pitted against local rivals the Shoulder of Mutton, for whom it was there first competitive match of the season. Shoulder opted to go second. Jill the Quiz Mistress had been savaged by a head cold so Minnie mouse stepped into the breach. The hairy Hounds leapt into a 7-3 lead after round one. Rounds two and three saw the Shoulder post better scores of 6-7 to claw part of the lead back with both sides stinking on two in round four the halftime totals were Hare and Hounds 21 Shoulder of Mutton19.
Round five and six saw the Shoulder take both the rounds with scores of 6-8 and 6-10, this meant the Shoulder now had the upper hand with a lead of four points 33-37. Round seven saw the Hairy Hounds pull two back with the help of Dave “the elder statesman” Wrights batwings, so the score was 30-42 going into the final round. First three questions were correctly answered by both teams, nobody correctly answered the Shoulders final question, but the Hairy Hounds managed to score on there own to level the scores and tie the match with a round score of 8-5 and final scores of Hare and Hounds 48 Shoulder of Mutton 48.
Shoulder of Mutton went into the beer leg mob handed, and both teams again could not be split apart and it went to the tie break with the Shoulder taking the spoils by being only 190 years out whilst the Hairy Hounds were a double century or more away. The birdman wandered away to celebrate his impending senior citizenship for which we wish him the best , as for Minnie Mouse, Norfolk and John Galliano we wont mention that! Match of the week!
Stopes Tavern Elves were making toys this week.

Week 3 26-09-2011
The third week of the season has some intriguing clashes. First up is a Ramsbottom derby as the Rose and Crown host the Hare and Hounds with both sides starting off this season with mixed fortunes, this could be match of the week on form a tie could be close but if the visitors are at full strength an away win…….. just!
Second match this week has the Shoulder of Mutton host Rose and Crown Starling with the Rose licking there wounds after last weeks mauling, the Shoulder played a high scoring draw to begin there season on that alone, the visitors will find it tough to open their account and may suffer a second defeat to consolidate at the bottom of the table. A home win is the prediction.
Third match has the Radcliffe Cricketers hosting the tour bus of Heap Bridge, the Cricketers are showing strong early season form and Heap bridge have the toughest of starts this season, the Cricketers will have to keep up that form to win as the Knights will become confident if they take the lead. A home win but a close match.
Fourth game has Helens Harem at the SunDial Walmersley Rd host the St. Mary’s bs with the form book saying St. Mary’s this is going to be tough for the home harem, this will go the way of the form book but the B’s will have to take care!
Final game this week has the PackHorse Affetside host the Stopes Tavern and this has the potential to be this week’s draw as both sides form seem to be at the same stage. Potential match of the week and a point in it at most to either side!
Ramsbottom Cricketers are having a week off.
