PHIL'S COMMENTS

Week 20 Mar 31
Final week of the league season falls awkwardly this year with the Easter holiday falling at its earliest, some teams found that answers were hard to come by. The third place in the league was still to be confirmed and four teams were in with a shout.
Match of the week was as predicted the game at Heap Bridge Social Club where Rose and Crown Bury were visiting. Ian Openshaws Rose Bury had an excellent opening round and led by six points but after round three the Phoenix lads had recovered most of the lead to trail the visitors by just one point but the rose scored a maximum on the stick or twist round and restored most of that early advantage to lead by five points at the half way point again the Phoenix lads came back to level the scores going into the final individual round but the Rose team with John Cannon playing well took a five point advantage again going into the final round, which the Phoenix lads couldn’t overcome this time and the Rose took the match with a score of 41-45.
Just pipped for match of the week score wise was the game at Packhorse Affetside where the SunDial Walmersley road were visitors. Both teams found scoring hard to come by in this match but it made for a tense game which finally had the Packhorse team take the match by a score of 36-33. Packhorse secure third spot well done, especially after last season when they finished close to the foot of the table.
The game at Swan and Railway saw local rivals and the in form Stopes Tavern visiting to play the B’s who had a chance of third spot. Both teams had recently had good results and Paul Gardner’s Taverner’s have been playing superb, this match was no exception as they took charge during the match and ran out winners again with a score of 39-48, if they start there seasonal surge earlier next year they would contend the league. Team of the week Stopes Tavern.
Final Game this week was the visit of Swan and Railway A’s to Rose and Crown Rammy. With the home team showing signs recently of returning to early season form the visitors were thinking of league titles elsewhere it seemed ( blue Julie excepted) as Peter Taylors side ran away with the match 48-28.
Week 21 Monday April 7th
With the league matches now complete, the handicap cup is the focus and all is up for grabs with some teams having some very favourable handicaps indeed. The preliminary round match of the week is the game at Heap Bridge Social club where Peter Taylor’s Rose Rammy are visiting with both teams playing well and the handicaps giving the visitors just a one point advantage this will be very close but the home side may just overcome the handicap to progress but it could go down to the final round or even a tie break.
The second preliminary match has a rematch of the Rose Starling’s final league game at Swan and Railway Radcliffe B’s the league match ended in a draw and looking at the handicap that would mean last years cup and league winners going out. That result is the probable outcome as eleven points is a very tough call, the match on the night may just go the visitors way though.
All other sides have a week off to prepare. But looking at the handicaps the favourites for the cup are an on form SunDial or Swan A. However the Pack Horse may be the bandits this year.
