PHIL'S COMMENTS
The Final week of the league season has come round and it sprang a few surprises.
Match of the week and team of the week was easy to sort out this week, the match at Rose and Crown Ramsbottom hosting the Swan and Railway A’s is the pick of this week. With Rose rammy in pole position for third place in the league the game on paper and form looked a home win cert but buoyed up by his appearance on national television with Oscar and some director fellow, John (no autographs please) Heenan, John (was I there) Harris, Julie (who’s Oscar) Keenan and Alan (did you see me also) Smith must have played a cracking game, fuelled before arriving with a healthy dose of mavis’s tonic. Both sides fought hard to score points on the night and the match was hard fought all the way but at the end of the game it was the visitors victory and Peter Taylor’s tigers just missed out on third place finish. The Score 27-34.
Stopes Tavern had a Titanic Battle last weeks with the Pack Horse, tonight’s game visiting the Swan & Railway B could be a similar test of Stopes mettle & it had the added bonus of potentially being a fight for 3rd place.
Stopes elected to open the batting & honours were even at 5 a piece in the 1st round. After a bright opening round, Stopes were blissfully unaware of the trouble ahead!! The Swan lads managed a full house in the Rd 2, Stopes reply was a hard fought 2 points??!! Alec, John, Harry & Gordon continued to forge ahead in rounds 3 & 4 to no reply from Stopes in either round. A shell shocked & demoralised Stopes team made a hasty retreat to the Bar to gather their thoughts & reflect on their lowest ever recorded 1st half score of 7 to the Swans respectable 24. Recent form had deserted Stopes, but with the Swan only picking up 2 bonus points it was a fair indication of the imbalance in the questions & hopefully fortunes would be reversed in the second half of the game??
The momentum failed to materialise & any hope of a change in fortunes & a famous come-back quickly disappeared as the low scoring continued & honours were even over the next 3 rounds. Stopes had amassed the princely sum of 20 points to the Swans 37. A late flurry of 9 points helped Stopes’ restore a grain of respectability in a game quickly erased from the collective memory banks. The Swan added 2 points to their total for a final score of Swan B 39 – 29 Stopes Tavern. Well done to the Swan for securing 3rd spot, commiserations to Bert, Harry, Roger & Tim, bring on the K/O Cup say Stopes!!!!!!!
The next match in the 3rd place lottery was at Heap Bridge who had the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook as the opponents.
The night started with The Hounds aiming at there goal of 3rd place, as long as Rose Rammy lost at Swan A, Stopes and Swan B drew, and Hare and Hounds beat the Phoenix Knights and scored 20 points more than Swan B.
After electing to go second, Hare & Hounds blanked the first Round, and then won the next two , they then magnificently zeroed again in the stick or twist round 4, with The Phoenix Lads finally guessing correctly on Wedding Anniversaries to give the home side at half-time advantage of 16 - 7. Round 5 was a tense draw at 4 - 4, Hounds won 10-4 in two-parters to claw back to within 3 points of the phoenix knights but that elusive third place was slipping away. The second individual went 7-3 to the knights, third position had gone. In a particularly difficult final round the home side scraped 2 points with Hare & Hounds scoring a whole point, giving them a final score of 25, their lowest in living memory. So Heap Bridge won 33 -25. The night finished with HSBC on the same number of points as the Hounds, but Hare & Hounds finishing in 6th place on goals scored!
Final league match this week was the visit to the Pack Horse Affetside of the SunDial with barney and his harem but with the questions this week everyone found it tough, Sue Pinder and the lads signed of the league season with a 40 -20 point win.
The Rose and Crown Starling and the Radcliffe Cricketers were on a free week.
Mar 9TH Cup week 1
The first weeks fixtures in the handicap cup drawn by our sponsor Roger Bolt has the Rose and Crown Starling visit the SunDial Walmersley Rd . With the handicaps it means the league Champions have to give Barney and the Harem a 13 point start. It will be tough for the champions especially if the questions match this weeks standard but I expect a close match to ensue with only a point or two in it at the finish but to who!
If the girls are on form it may be the SunDial!!!
Second game is the PackHorse against Stopes Tavern with recent league form favouring the Stopes the cup is always a target for Sue ,Mike and the pack lads so form book may be overturned and with a two point start on handicap that may be crucial at the finish.
Hard to call this one maybe the tie break question will be required! Stopes maybe, just if the wheels don’t fall of this week.
SunDial (16) v Rose and Crown Starling (3)
Packhorse (10) v Stopes Tavern (8)
