PHIL'S COMMENTS
The icy weather had all venues turning up the heating and it seems this week most teams were on top form and three match results depended just on the last round alone. Also one of the outstanding fixtures was played on Tuesday 2nd March report is at the bottom and the review for that week has now been posted on the web.
A predicted tough match and contender for top match was the game at the Cricket Club in Radcliffe where Rammy Cricket Club were the visitors. The visitors are still fighting for runners up place and had to win to keep the pressure on the Hounds and the Elves. In a game that both teams scored well, meaning neither team could afford a slip up, the Rammy Cricketers just managed to secure the win in the final round, to ensure the runners up fight goes on. Score 46-52.
Team of the Week – Ramsbottom Cricket Club.
Match of the week, but only just, took place at the Swan and Railway Radcliffe where the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom were the visitors. In a predictably close game the visiting cup favourites Taylor’s Tigers made a mockery of their allotted handicap and played a tight match to overcome the hosts battling B’s in the final round by just a question 43-45.
Another fine match was held when Stopes Tavern Elves made the trip to the SunDial Walmersley Rd, to face Barney and the Harem who are hitting form ready for a cup run it appears, as the Elves were playing catch up all game and went into the final round four points adrift but Barney and the Harem drew a blank on the round to the Elves eight points score, to allow the Elves to breathe a deep sigh of relief for there acheived target of runners up spot and take the win with a score of 38-42.Congatulations to Paul and the lads.
The Rose and Crown Starling made the trip up the hill to the PackHorse Affetside for a match that the visitors were a little nervous about on current form but a delightful pint of Hydes later, and the nerves were settled, as the home side of Mike Pinder, Simon Waddington, Adrian Finbow and James Perkin dropped two questions (hey jude and luddittes) in the first round which were picked up for bonuses and the Rose scored a full house to lead 4-10.
Second round individuals saw the drug question go down ok but the home side missed the kylie tour to be picked up by Lee Sawbridge for a bonus. But Bob Selby missed out on the Nordic Cross as did the Pack lads for a bonus, the search engines was dropped by the home side and failed to be picked up by someone else (funny that, with his e-mail address) and who asked Jeeves correctly for a round score of 4-7. Total score 8-17. Round three saw a full house for the visitors and a bonus when the PackHorse dallied and only just dropped Grenadines for a total of 14-26. Round four stink or twist, wing and a prayer, saw the Rose score a superb but rare eight points this season and the home side were looking good for a maximum themselves, when they got the excellent first Oscar right but then they stuck on two when Anna Wing’s Lou Beale couldn’t come to mind. Halftime score 16-34.
Round five had the Packhorse make the same mistakes that has dogged the Rose this season, when they failed to pick the right choice of two answers to drop Una Thurman, Hooke’s Elastic Theory and Ants. Whilst the visitors picked up a full house again with all the bonuses to pull further ahead 18-45. Round six, four or two questions, found the home side making two gambles on four points and missed owl monkey and tiramisu. With the Rose picking up the cake for three, dropping the computer language but scoring two on the rest for a score of 4-9 and a total of 22-54. Round Seven individuals had the home side winning a round at last when the Rose dropped Indian cuisines Aubergine but Bob had picked up the Cauliflower bonus and then Kieran Goldsbrough also allowed Tatum O’Neill to slip through his fingers which was picked up by the PackHorse, all other choices were scored for a round score of 7-5 and a total of 29-59. Final round had both sides drop two questions with the Rose picking up the frond bonus and missing the 80 metres Ladies hurdles and Margaret Drabble, the PackHorse also missed the bonuses and Micheal Frayne, final score 33-64,after which delicious doorstop beef sandwiches with optional mustard were enjoyed by all and the beer round went the PackHorse way.
Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook were hosting the Swan and Railway A who flew in on a southerly wind arriving at the Hairy Hounds venue and opting to go the unusual second way, reports Yosemite Sam. Round one saw both teams drop one question but the hounds sniffed out a bonus to take a 7-6 lead. First individual round saw Andy Ainsworth on a high after cleaning up on the drugs. Honours were even on the pop, but Peter Maguire was cross and dangling from the flag pole by the Scandinavians. Dave “Yahoo” Wright missed out on his search for Jeeves but picked up a bonus on his travels by re-stating his previous guess, giving the Hairy Hounds a two point lead. In round three, Swan A dropped one, which was picked up again by the Hounds for a 9-6 round. Round four Stink or twist saw the Hairy Hounds reach 4 and stick, whilst the Swans got the stink Oscar question for two and stuck on one in winged flight. This meant the Swans were trailing by eight at halfway 25-17, but the Swans tail feathers were still up as they had won from a similar position last week.
However the second half questions proved not to be of the Swans liking, and the Hairy Hounds, refreshed by the half time real ale ration started to smell victory taking the round 9-2 and the hops.
Final three rounds went with scores of 7-4,6-3 and 6-0 to the Hairy Hounds giving a final score of 54-26. By way of consolation for the Swans, there was a lovely Steak Pie supper.
The Phoenix Knights were polishing there shields this week on a free.
One of the re-arranged fixtures from the snow affected week12 took place at the Radcliffe Cricket Club on March 2 nd when the new Champions hosted the Rammy Rose and Crown. Phil Dodds men had lost again the previous night, against the Cricket Club in a close game and so did not want to lose two nights running, whilst the visiting Rose Rammy Taylor’s Tigers had beaten the Swan B in the match of the week, but the weeks original questions were a different kettle of fish for both sides and in a match that the Cricketers took a hold of, the visitors could not repeat there win and the Cricketers confirmed the Championship with a 44-34 win.
A new set of questions is being ordered for the remaining outstanding fixture to be arranged, Rammy Cricketers v Swan B, as the Swans had used the originals on the snowy January evening to keep warm.

The Handicap Cup Draw was held at the PackHorse and the matches drawn (handicaps in brackets), and dates to be played are:
MONDAY 22ND MARCH
PRELIMINARY ROUND HANDICAP CUP
Heap Bridge Social Club (+10) v Rose and Crown Starling (+4)
Stopes Tavern (+9) v Swan and Railway B (+6)
PackHorse Affetside (+10) v Radcliffe Cricket Club (0)
All other teams have a bye into the first round which is below
MONDAY 29TH MARCH
1ST ROUND HANDICAP CUP

Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook (+7) v Swan and Railway A (+14)
Rose and Crown Ramsbottom (+13) v Winner match 1
Winner match 3 v SunDial, Walmersly Rd (+17)
The anti post current form guide is as follows:
Rose Rammy burglars are still favourites, second favourites are the SunDial Harem with Swan A Bandits. A good each way bet is the PackHorse Highwaymen, the Hairy Hounds hoodies and the Evil Elves. All other teams have an evens money chance at this time except for the Rank outsiders current Cup Holders Rose Starling Suffragettes.
Semi- finals will be drawn later.

Week 21 Monday 8th Mar 2010
The matches last week were very competitive and close overall, and this week’s fixture list is not an easy one to predict either as most games could go either way, with maybe a surprise or two.
Rose and Crown Ramsbottom host the PackHorse in the mountain derby. With Taylor’s Tigers free to show there true form of late and the Pack Horse form indifferent, the guide says a home win but I have a feeling that the PackHorse will be in the hunt all the way this week and may just sneak it by a point…….maybe.
In what is the top match on paper this week, the local derby between the Ramsbottom Cricket Club and Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook will end the chase for Runners up position finally for one of the sides or both! With the Cricket club beating this years Champions Radcliffe Cricket Club last week, the Hairy hounds know they will be in for a tough match either way but the Hounds are not going to give way this season and are chasing the resting Elves all the way. Very close, the Cricketers will not compromise but the Hounds by a point, a draw is not out of the question but it will end both’s chances finally.
Rose and Crown Starling host the Swan and Railway A’s and are looking to reverse the result at the Swan earlier, last week saw the host’s hit form again but in a season where it’s been hit and miss they have to be careful, as the Swan’s have been showing good form and will hope to bounce back to that after last week’s heavy defeat. A home win but a close game is on the cards. In a match that could be game of the week the Swan and Railway B’s visit the Phoenix knight’s of Heap Bridge Social club who after a weeks rest to hone their metal, should be in the mood for a joust, the Swan’s had a narrow defeat last week and this one could go the same way but a draw is my prediction surprisingly.
Final match has the champions Radcliffe Cricketers visiting the SunDial and Barney and the Harem if the SunDial show the form of the last two week’s this one could be very close and a result in the SunDial’s favour would not be a shock to me but the champion’s will want to continue Tuesday’s winning form and forget Monday’s loss and an away win is predicted but a draw is not out of the question on form!
The Stopes Tavern Elves are celebrating finishing runners up this week, they can't be caught on my late calculations, congratulations must go to Paul and the lads well played .
