PHIL'S COMMENTS

The wet, and windy weather continues to dominate the skies but the warm and welcoming venues of the quiz league continue to shine bright.
We kick off this week with the visit of Shoulder of Mutton to SunDial Walmersley Rd and Helen is not a happy bunny as she reported the Harem lost the match before it started when the visitors chose to go first or second, the Shoulder took advantage and grabbed hold of the match running away to an excellent score with a 29-52 point win.
Team of the week award this week goes to Radcliffe Cricket Club who had the PackHorse Affetside visiting and in a high scoring match the PackHorse gave a good account of themselves considering recent form but the Current Champions are showing league winning form as they ran away with the match in the latter stages to post a 65-42 score.
Match of the week took place at the Rose and Crown Starling who had the St. Mary’s OscArs visiting and with the team missing a regular member this week, there former landlady Mavis Harris stepped in to “make up the numbers” she said, as it turned out she played a crucial part in the match. (The Swan and Railway is to reopen shortly as a managed pub). The visitors decided to go first and both teams scored with there first questions, OscArs scored the second also but the Rose missed the Trial by Jury answer which wasn’t picked up and then the visitors missed the Magic Flute matching question which was also missed as a bonus to much barracking of both teams from the question master who was … guess who! Both teams completed the round by scoring further to give a first round score of six all. Round two individuals saw both sides score with the first three categories but then both sides dropped the Desert Island Discs with Simon Cowell looking smug in his mirror but the OscArs cooked up Nigella for a bonus when Bob fried his brains trying to recall her name, 6-7 round score. Round three saw St. Mary’s have a complete disaster on there own questions picking up just a one point bonus for Freddie Mills the home Rose side failed to capitalise by just picking up the “When Irish Eyes are smiling” bonus on top of the six points with there own questions for a 7-1 round score and totals of 19-14. Round four Stink or twist British Queen’s proved a stinker for both sides as the visitors thought the two pointer was lizzie one and nilled the round, whilst the Rose didn’t even get that far missing Anne completely.
Half time totals Rose and Crown 19 St. Mary’s A’s 14.
Round Five saw the OscArs score a full house with the Rose dropping Constantine the Great only for a round score of 6-8. Round six two parters had the hosts play safe for two on the first but Claire Francis stumped the OscArs and was picked up for a single bonus point both teams then scored safe two pointers and the Oscar’s missed Lyon and the hosts grabbed the bonus point again. With the OscArs of Capt John Harris, Nigel Saunders, John Heenan and Mavis, grabbing a maximum four on the last question against another safe two points for the hosts, the round deficit for the OscArs was limited to four points and a 10-6 score for totals of 35-28. The second individual round seven proved difficult to all but one member of both sides with only Kieran for the hosts taking the Jungle book points and Nigel knocking out the Mohammed Ali points for the visitors. Round score three each. Final round saw the Rose team of Jayne, Lee, Bob and Kieran secure the match by answering the first two questions as did the OscArs but then the hosts missed out on the final Churchill College and Rover answers which wasn’t picked up the OscArs who missed the Per Mere, Per Terras answer only but it wasn’t picked up by the Rose, 4-6 round score.
Final Score Rose and Crown 42 St. Mary’s A’s 37. The beer leg went to the tie break question which was narrowly won by the Rose side.
Heap Bridge Social Club had the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom visiting the Phoenix Nights and in a close contest that saw Taylor’s Tigers pull away only in the final stages to ring up a win. The Phoenix Knights are glad of the break next week as there form has slumped. Final score 37-48. Stopes Tavern hosted the Ramsbottom Cricket Club and in another well fought contest the Elves got back to winning ways reported skipper Paul Gardner as they managed to overcome the visitors with a 49-41 score.
Final match this week saw St. Mary’s Radcliffe B’s host the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook with a close contest on the cards Yosemite Sam reports:-
Hare and Hounds were away at St. Mary’s B, probably the Hairy Hounds Bogie team and half of the Hounds pack had gone walkies! Andy was sliding on his bum down Italian Mountains. Yosemite had wandered off to the Netherlands, using Around Amsterdam in 80 beers as his bible, (other titles are available such as Amstel here Amstel there, Amstel every bl……., or Stoned, Cold and Sober Café Society in Am…….),back to the Quiz. JC’S R Us (the two Johns, the mighty Cannon and the Travelling Connell) had been deployed as replacements for the wandering minstrels. At the point of writing this Yosemite has no idea who went first, further research showed that one of the team members and a groupie also had no idea who went first on the night (Had they been to Amsterdam also). Round One St. Mary’s B’s took a 6-4 lead. Round Two, the Mighty Cannon picked up the only bonus on Reptilian pop and the Hairy Hounds pulled back a point by winning the round 6-7. For the second week running Round Three proved disastrous for the Hairy Hounds. The Hounds were obviously on the wrong end of the tougher questions as no bonus points were picked up by St Mary’s and the score was, as Gordon Ottershaw would say, “Eight Bloody Nil” (but that was an improvement on the previous week). Round four saw the Hairy Hounds Stick on none, (ok, so they got the first one wrong) and St. Mary’s stuck on four, giving Half time scores of St. Mary’s B’s 24 Hare and Hounds 11.
Round five went to the Hairy Hounds 4-7 and round six also 10-12, second individuals went 8-4 to the hosts and the final round was tied six all, giving a final score of St. Mary’s B’s 52 Hare and Hounds 40. A difference of twelve, otherwise known as rounds three and four! At this point of writing I have been informed by The Great Caruso (Team Capitan), that he elected to go first, good job someone has a memory not mentioning any names, Mr Cannon! So St. Mary’s B’s had completed the double this season over the Hairy Hounds and to rub it in they also took the beer leg this time!!!
The two Ramsbottom Teams that are yet to pay there subs for the year could they please provide payment to Margaret Chamberlain Rose Rammy at the earliest opportunity please.
A new league Secretary, web author and Bury Times reporter will be required next season could all interested parties put there name forward please.

Week 21 28-02-2011
Just the four matches this week, the action will be tight and a surprise or two may be on the cards.
First match is at Rose and Crown Starling who had the Stopes Tavern Elves visiting and both teams have had poor form recently but both come with a win last week, close game but the visitors may just have the edge this week….
SunDial Walmersley Rd host the free scoring St. Mary’s Radcliffe B’s this week and Helen’s Harem have not had the rub of the green lately but they have been playing well, they will however have to be on top form to beat the St. Mary’s B’s who’s form have seen them climb the table and since Christmas they would be at the top of the form league.
Ramsbottom Cricket Club host the Rammy Derby with the Rose and Crown descending to river level this could be match of the week however as Taylor’s Tigers could be vulnerable but the forecast is for an away win but not by many.
Final match this week is the Holcombe Derby with Hare and Hounds hosting the Shoulder of Mutton and recent form suggests this will be close with the visitors showing some good results in recent weeks and this will not differ, as an away win is predicted but by only a few….maybe! St. Mary’s OscArs are writing letters of complaint to Manchester United for reasons of poor quality and content this week.
Heap Bridge are sharpening there swords. Radcliffe Cricket Club are losing form Starling hopes, and the PackHorse are in full training mode.
