PHIL'S COMMENTS

The quiz league had a full fixture list this week and a full set of results with a few surprises with one very sporting surprise result. With dark and dank weather dominating and some venues returning to having customers, for a change, although the noise level did cause some problems for us partially deaf quizzers.
First match to report in was the match at Heap Bridge Social Club and the Knights have hit a patch of consistent form at long last as they won there third match in a row when the Stopes Tavern Elves came calling. In a competitive match the score was 53-45.
The second match to report in on the evening was the league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club, who had SunDial Walmersley Rd calling with Helen’s Harem. The Harem had only three players available on the evening so the Cricket Club offered the services of Kevin for the match and he proved to be a lucky charm as the SunDial ran out winners with a 48-53 score. Match of the Week and team of the week goes to both Radcliffe Cricket Club and SunDial for being so sporting, with every point counting for the Cricketers in the race for the title it could have proven crucial.
Third match was on paper one of the top two matches, when the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook visited the enigma St. Mary’s B’s Radcliffe with both teams fighting for possible honours at the top of the league it proved poetic as Yosemite Sam reports:-
Monday the Hounds arrived at St. Mary’s b.
Which seems to bring out the Poet in me.
On entering the place the door does scream,
A high pitched sound, of a win you can dream.
Head to the room and there’s loads of seating.
After a request from the Hosts, there is some heating.
Electricity required we need some volts,
But there is a decent pint of Joseph Holt’s.
Quiz underway the Hounds went first,
The bitter then did quench the thirst.
But not for knowledge it seemed a grind.
As during the first half , Hounds went behind.
With Celtic books and birds that Honked,
Hounds made wrong choices and were getting tonked.
The Hairies tried harder to put up a fight, but ended up rocking
As many of the answers were totally shocking.
Both halves were similar, rounds went three to one,
To St. Mary’s in Victory the points had gone.
The Hounds amassed a total of thirty and four,
49’ers said St. Mary’s and it was their score.
But you can’t win everything is the old refrain,
So the Hounds took the beer leg and will live to quiz again.

To make the score clear to the less poetic amongst us St. Mary’s b’s 49 Hare and Hounds 34.
Fourth match to report in took place at the Shoulder of Mutton with Stephen Greenhalgh reporting:- As pubs, even those with enough wisdom to host a quiz team, continue to fall like nine pins, the Shoulder welcomed the nomads from the PackHorse, known now as the Royal Horsemen.
By the end of the second round the Horsemen seemed to be in the wilderness, following a first round score of 11-0, a 9-4 deficit in the first individual round followed which left the Royal Horsemen with a mountain to climb and it proved insurmountable. At this point the Shoulder had shown a worrying depth of Knowledge in Lulu, Disneyland and The Goon Show.
The remainder of the matches normal rounds were relatively even with the exception of the Stick or Twist round, in which the Shoulder scored a full house and effectively ended the match as a contest. Fair play to the Royal Horsemen though, as they refused to give up hope and battled every round to the end. The Horsemen rallied to narrowly take the beer leg and the Tie Break. Final Score, Shoulder of Mutton 57 Royal Horsemen 39.
Final match took place at the Rose and Crown Starling who had high flying Ramsbottom Cricket Club visiting in what was on paper the second of the top two matches of the week.
The Rammy C.C. elected to go first and dropped a Clegger on the first question when Nick’s ministerial title went begging and wasn’t picked up by the Rose as Lord President of the Privy Council could not be recalled. The Rose took a 4-2 lead to the third question when the Cricketers dropped the celtic language of Cornish but it missed the Rose too, who then dropped a bluebottle which flew by both teams. Round score 6-4. Second round individual’s had categories of Final Executions, Lulu, Artistic Christian Names and Disneyland. Both teams negotiated the questions well but the Cricketers dropped disneyland’s frontierland, which wasn’t picked up. Round score 8-6 for a total of 14-10. Third round saw the Cricketers pick up the only bonus of unsurprisingly Kevin O’Brien whilst scoring a good full house to take the round 6-9.
Stink round saw the Cricketers stick on two as Clement Attlee was uncertain and the Rose stuck on four when Anthony Eden was also dithered on. Halftime scores Rose and Crown 24 Ramsbottom Cricket Club 21.
Round five saw both teams score a full house 8 points each. Round six two part questions saw the Rose start with a max four, then pick up a bonus one with Mount of Olives. The teams played safe with question 2 for two apiece and the Rose went safe with 2 points on the third, the Cricketers team of Chris Woolfall, Mike Everett, Ian Bell and Ben Dack picked up a max four with 10000 metres but dropped the last for a bonus point Charles I. Round score 12-6 for totals of 44-35. Round seven second individuals had categories of Bob Monkhouse, Harmonica Players, Pre-decimal nicknames and Ashes to Ashes. The Rose promptly dropped the first two questions giving the Cricket teams two bonus points, the Rose scored on the final two questions and picked up a bonus George Harrison thanks to Kieran, round score 5-8. The final round saw any hope of a comeback extinguished when the Rose scored there fourth full house of the evening but miss two bonus points when the Cricketers missed Ganeymede and the Justice league of America.
A well fought match had a final score of Rose and Crown 57 Ramsbottom Cricket Club 47, and with success in the beer leg by a single point and the tie break the Rose took all the money.
The Rose and Crown Rammy were resting this week and the Tigers were sharpening there claws.
Late result from last week Rose and Crown Rammy 43 St. Mary’s B’s 63.

Week 21 27-2-12
Week Twenty one will hopefully be dry outside this week but the competition is hotting up if any teams drop points at the top.
Match one see the Hare and Hounds in this weeks, on paper, top clash host the Rose and Crown Starling. Whoever loses this one will probably finish below the other in the table and the visitors are on a run of form but that means nothing and the Hounds will be gunning to prune the Rose this week close match ….. away win just or a draw.
Second match top is Ramsbottom Cricket Club hosting an in form Heap Bridge Social Club and this could if both teams hold form prove to be match of the week, with the Phoenix Knights steaming in to hold the Cricketers for a draw perhaps if not home win just.
Third match has Stopes Tavern hosting the Radcliffe Derby with the Radcliffe Cricket Club . The Cricketers cannot afford another loss and so will be trying there hardest to overpower the hosts from the off , however nerves and tactics may play a part and the Elves may well be up for this one a close match but the Cricketers may just prevail or a draw may not be far away……….
Shoulder of Mutton play away to the SunDial somewhere, and this will be another close affair if the SunDial play to form discovered last week another draw will be close but the Shoulder may just have enough to win……..perhaps.
Final match this week has the Royal Horsemen hosting the Rose and Crown Rammy with both teams having an up and down season the Rose Tigers may just have the form to beat the Horsemen but it will be close!
St. Mary’s b’s will be nervously awaiting the results this week.
