PHIL'S COMMENTS

Week21
With the fight for the league now over, teams are looking forward to the Handicap Cup. The handicap is based on each team's average score for the season (or up to the point the average was taken) against the league leaders' average at that point. So Rose and Crown Starling have a handicap of zero and all other teams have an advantage over them indicated in brackets. These are then subtracted from one another to give each team's points start. Due to team numbers taking part in this year's league, in Round 1 of this year's cup only 4 teams played. Match A saw the cup holders Stopes Tavern (11) host league runners-up Radcliffe Cricket Club (1). With a ten point advantage and a run of recent good form, the Taverners were hoping to mount a good defence of the cup title, but on the night it proved different. Phil Dodd's Cricketers won convincingly on the night 39-53 but with the handicap, managed to haul back the Taverners' advantage to a nervous finishing score of 49-53. Match B saw the Swan and Railway B (8) at home to the Rose and Crown Starling (0). Only two weeks ago, the Swan B team beat the League Champions, so with the handicap advantage the Rose team expected a very short cup run. On the night however, the Rose hit top form against the Swan's team of Enid Cathcart, Alan Clayton, John Hill and Harry Wilkinson. After a first round draw, the second saw the advantage halved and the Rose lead by the end of round three. But a good fourth saw the home side retake the lead at half time. A full house saw the lead change hands again after round five and although closely fought, the Swans could not regain their advantage for the rest of the match. The Rose side of Terry Brierley, Jayne Woodward, Kieran Goldsbrough (whose vast knowledge of comic book characters proved useful on the night), and the legend Wally Warrington, ran out overwhelming 36-52 points winners. But with the handicap, the final score was 44-52. Week 22 These matches to be played on Monday 16th April due to the Easter Break. Tie of the week is very hard to choose, as is should be with the handicap coming into force, but just pipping it are first round victors Cricket Club (1) at home to Rose Starling (0). With the top two league teams playing each other this will always be a close tie, after a season where each team won at the other's venue. The prediction is for there to be only one or two points in it, but which way? Last season's cup runners-up Rose Rammy(9) host Rose Bury (6). With a recent league match going in favour of Peter Taylor's Rammy side, the Rose Bury will be wanting to gain revenge. Ian's side, after such a good consistent season, are hunting for silverware - but can they overcome the handicap? Heap Bridge (11) have the Sun Dial (14) visiting. With narrow losses for many games, the Diallers three point start would give them an excellent chance of going through normally, but the Phoenix Nights boys are formidable opponents at home. Three points and very top form might (and it would be just might) be enough, but anything less and a narrow loss will ensue. Final quarter-final match is Swan A (16) at home to Pack Horse (12). I think the Pack Horse would like a nice cup run and it may be possible if their recent form holds. |
