PHIL'S COMMENTS
The first /preliminary round of the knockout cup saw the league champions Rose and Crown Starling in a now annual appearance, it seems, in this round, visit the SunDial Walmersley Road, with Barney having made other arrangements, the Harem was left to defend there honour alone. With a thirteen point start a full team would have made life very difficult for the Rose but even with only three Ann Wylie, Anne Lee-Nicolson, Mrs Eunice (card shark) Pooler they gave a very good account of themselves on the night. Our question-master on the night Jayne Rowley got things going and round one saw the visitors pull back over half the handicap to finish with a score of 15-10 including handicap secomd round saw the Rose draw level at 18-18. It then seems the home side switched on and despite going behind in round three it was only by a single point. Round 4 saw the visitors go for eight points and the ex-rugby league professional Bob Selby blew it by mixing his codes and tigers grounds. With the home side scoring two, the half time score was 26-25. Round five saw the scores level again but round six saw the Rose pull out a six point gap which increased to ten after the individual round seven into the final round the home side pulled back part of the deficit by scoring a full house to the roses four points but to late, the game was over and the final score ended up 46-52. One good item to come out of the evening, was a possible recruit to the home side came forward at the end of the night.
Stopes travelled up the Hill to the Pack Horse for the second time in a fortnight, for what on paper was the closest of contests. The recent league game saw Stopes winning by 2 points on the very last question and with a 2 point handicap in favour of the Pack Horse surely a penalty shoot out was on the cards?? But with last weeks gruelling affair still smarting, hopefully a more evenly pitched game was in prospect!!!!
The Pack Horse team, minus their influential captain Mike Pinder, flew out of the blocks with a full house to the Taverners 6 in Rd 1 to lead 10-6 after the handicap adjustment. Stopes clawed a point back in the individual Rd & a further 8 points to 6 in Rd 3 saw the difference reduced to 1 point, going into the stick or twist Rd and with both teams failing to recall any Monopoly Board place names, honours were again shared for a half time score of 22-21 in favour of the Pack Horse.
Stopes took advantage of a faltering Pack side in Rd’s 5 and 6 to show a 5 point advantage 35-30, then Stopes tried to press the self destruct button and registered only 2 points from the second individual Rd. Pack Horse scored heavily and the handicapping proved spot on, as both teams entered the last Rd level at 37 a piece.
The Stopes team have become last round sneaky specialists in recent weeks, securing a number of wins on the last question, but thankfully Stopes were spared another nerve wracking finish as they scored a full house and a bonus point to a 4 point reply from the Pack, who never recovered from a wrong answer to a very mischievous Baseball question??
Thanks too Sue and the Boys for an excellent game, giving a final score of Stopes 46 – 41 Pack Horse.

Mar 16th Cup week 2
The first round of the cup is the fayre this week and all fixtures are prospective very tight matches that appear on the cards.
Possible match of the week is hard to choose but Radcliffe Cricket club host the Phoenix Knights and even with league form slipping away at the seasons end, the handicap start of seven could mean a game long chase for the hosts and will they catch up...... I just feel the visitors may be a point ahead at the end but only a point if they are on form, if not the home team will prevail. Stopes Tavern earned a place in this round by overcoming the Pack Horse in the last round but they host a tough Radcliffe derby by having the Swan and Railway A’s visiting, and with a handicap start of nine points the visitors could prove hard to overcome. Paul’s trophy chasing Taverner’s may be chasing the game throughout if the Swan’s play to their best form, as they are my dark horse tip for the trophy. Could be a tie break question in prospect, but if the Swan’s are below top form on the night, the home side may just nick in the last round again.
Another very tough game to predict if both teams are on form is at the Rose and Crown Rammy who have the Swan B’s gliding in. The Swan B’s concede just one point to the Rose at the start and the Rose will have to be purring to keep that advantage on season end form. If Peter Taylor’s tigers are purring another tiebreak may be required but cup favourites Swan b may just reverse the advantage at the end.
Final game is a tough one for the home side Rose and Crown Starling as the visiting Hare and Hounds have wangled a five point start, if the visitors play to potential they will prevail over the league champions but if Legend Wally has his ears on, it could be very, very,...... very close.
Rose and Crown Starling (3) v Hare and hounds Holcombe Brook (8)
Stopes Tavern (8) v Swan and Railway A (17)
Radcliffe Cricket Club (0) v Heap Bridge (7)
Rose and Crown Ramsbottom (7) v Swan and Railway B (6)
The draw for the semi-finals was made by the SunDial Harem and is as follows:-
Stopes Tavern or Swan a v Radcliffe cc or Heap Bridge
Rose Starling or Hairy Hounds v Rose Rammy or Swan b.
Both games to be played at Wembley or home venues which ever is cheaper.
All teams please note the cup final is at Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook on Monday 30 th MARCH.
