PHIL'S COMMENTS
The climate has at last caught up with the wishes of the population and become warmer during the day, this weeks matches took place with only the minor placings to be sorted as the Champions are Radcliffe Cricket Club and Runners up are the resting Stopes Tavern my congratulations go to both teams who have had a great season.
First match this week and match of the week was the battle of the hills, with Rose and Crown Ramsbottom hosting the PackHorse Affetside. With Mike Pinder and the lads having no luck last week they were looking to bounce back but Taylor’s Tigers have been showing good form and in a close game took the honours with a score of 44-39.
Heap Bridge Social club had the Swan and Railway Radcliffe B visiting and in a match that could have been match of the week the visitors took charge of the match in the second half and went on to win with a score of 41-47.
The Hare and Hounds travelled down the road to Ramsbottom Cricket club, minus Yosemite Sam and Boo Boo, who had gone to witness The Skynrd Nation lecture on God and Guns. The drafted in as replacements were Chicken Licken and Foghorn Leghorn to accompany regulars Mickey Mouse and Daffy Duck. So the report on the evening’s proceedings is from Chicken Licken (edited by Yosemite Sam).
The Hairy Hounds chose to open the bowling at the Cricket Club so the hosts batting first promptly racked up a first innings lead of 22-15. The first innings highlights for hairy hounds saw Mickey Mouse rise to the challenge of identifying San Francisco’s much filmed incline and he was rightly proud of his nob and hillock. Fab four specialist Foghorn Leghorn (formerly Bugs Bunny, name changed by deed poll) needed no help in the individual round and covered the Beatles well.
The second half again produced a sticky wicket for the Hairy Hounds again, with only Mickey Mouse’s inside knowledge of Bloomers being of any note and hoping on questions on the television series Bread, Chicken Licken was dismayed in the individual round to find the subject was actually the loaf of Bread, oh crumbs! and he failed to earn a crust for the hounds as a consequence in the round. Despite this setback the Hounds clawed back the match deficit slightly by winning the round 7-4. This left the Hairy Hounds chasing a seven point gap going into the last round. Alas, a complete blank in the round by the hounds didn’t cause the Rammy Cricketers much consternation. The Hairy Hounds won only one round and drew one all match, with the Cricketers winning with a score of 44-32.
The beer round also went to the Cricketers, leaving the Hounds to bolt, tails between there legs clutching corned relative sandwiches and crisps in their paws due to the lack of plates. Chicken Licken reports it could have been worse the sky could have fallen down!
Finally confirmed as champions, Radcliffe Cricket Club visited the SunDial Walmersly Rd with Barney and the Harem and if the visitors were on top form it may have been tricky for Phil Dodd and his men but the Cricketers were imperious during the match and ran away with a score of 28-53.
Last match this week and final game of the league season for the hosts was the visit of Swan and Railway A to the Rose and Crown Starling. The hosts were looking to end the season on a victory, the visitors chose to go the traditional route and went first, round one saw the first questions answered correctly, then the Swans dropped the Easter egg and japans sliding door with the Rose making the bonuses and scoring a full house for a 10-4 score. Round two individuals had Terry drop the Statue of Liberty and partner Ann miss the in-groaning toe nail but pick up a felony whitlow. The Swan dropped only the one question for a round winning score of 5-6. Round three had both teams flustered with the hosts missing the Rugby Questions and the war themes but grasping nob hill and visiting the Doctors with the visitors missing the rugby but grabbing a bonus with Samoa, and missing loggers and the Faroe Islands. Round Score 4-3, total 19-13. Round Four stink or twist lived up to it’s name again with a single letter theme, the Swan stuck on two when John Cleese and R could not be recalled whilst the hosts had a guess and missed J from “Men in Black”. Halftime score 19-15. Refreshments and a fresh air fix was welcome by both sides. Round five made a monkey of both teams with the answers for the Bonobo chimp with the Rose missing Richard I but picking up the Little Black Dress cast off wantonly by the Swans of John Harris, John Heenan, Carl Dyees and Nigel Saunders, who picked up the bonus king. Round score 7-5, Total 26-20.
Round six the four or two round saw the hosts play safe for a full house but also pick up two bonus points with Malachite and UNICEF for ten points and the Swan scored four with Joan Sims and Chepstow. Round seven, the second individuals had the visitors struggling and scoring only with the food processor, the hosts missed only the sour dough but picked up Pulp, Canada, courtesy of the Legend Wally and Ann consumed the Muffin also. Round Score 9-2 total 45-26. Final round saw the hosts pick up five points with a bonus Bligh after the first two but fail on the rest whist the Swans glided to six points with there questions only for a final score of 50-32. Home made Meat and Potato pie, peas and Gravy was then heartily consumed.
Team of the week; Stopes Tavern Elves, who were celebrating there runners up success this week.
With a replacement set of questions Swan B hosted the outstanding fixture from the Snow on Tuesday versus Rammy Cricketers, with both teams tasting victory on Monday this should have been a close match and the home side would have been favourites but Rammy Cricketers took a grip of the match and are pressing home a probable third place finish, with a score of 33-43.

Week 22 Monday 15th Mar 2010
Last weeks predictions were made under the influence it appears as none were even close so this week, which is the last week of the league season. will be in the ball park I hope.4 Top match on paper appears to be the game at Stopes Tavern where the League runners up Elves play host to the long time challengers Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook. The Hairy Hounds will be wanting to end the season on a good note and finish as high as possible whilst the Elves will want to consolidate their runners up spot. The prediction is a very competitive match and an away win ….. just.
Rose and Crown Ramsbottom are probably the form side at the moment and have the SunDial Walmersly Rd visiting but if Barney and the Harem are back on song this could go all the way and the visitors may just tame Taylor’s tigers by a point, if they waiver at all then the Tigers will pounce though.
Swan and Railway Radcliffe A have the Ramsbottom Cricket Club visiting and if Mavis’s tonic is taken in the right dosage then the Swans could spring a surprise but the guide say’s the visitors form is at its peak and they will want to finish a very impressive debut season as high up the table as possible. Away win but only just.
League Champions Radcliffe Cricket Club hosts the final Radcliffe Derby against Swan and Railway B this is another match that could go all the way to the final round. The visitors will want to keep there edge for a cup run so and will be trying to upset the champions and in my prediction may just achieve the win!
Final match is the PackHorse Affetside who have the Phoenix Knights of HeapBridge Social Club charging up the hill, another close game is predicted here and the game may well be match of the week, a draw will not be a surprise but the visitors may just gain a hold by a point.
The Rose and Crown Starling are polishing lost silverware this week.
