PHIL'S COMMENTS

This week sees the number of fixtures drop to four on the night but the matches are still close and competitive and the handicaps for the cup are posted also, which are very interesting as it looks as though there are at least 8 or nine teams with bandit handicaps especially on recent form. There is also a scoreline change from last week as Radcliffe Cricketers posted a score of 65 not 62 as originally stated, it seems the editors dsy, sydlaxie…. Word blindness struck again during report composition, it has been corrected.
First match this week was the Rammy Derby at the Ramsbottom Cricket Club with the visitors being the Rose and Crown. Both teams have had different fortunes in recent weeks but Rammy Cricketers upset the form book by taming Taylor’s Tigers in a match that looked to be going down to the wire until the last couple of rounds 46-40 scoreline.
Second match was the Holcombe derby match when Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe village took the short stroll down the hill to visit the Hare and Hounds at the brook, Yosemite Sam reports:-
With only three league matches apiece remaining , one of the improving teams of the second half of the season, the Shoulder of Mutton, were on there first visit to local rivals Hare and Hounds, who were equalling there worst run of the season. The Shoulder elected to go first and promptly kept up recent form by leaping into a 6-9 point lead. Round two saw both teams score on the Human Skeleton but no other individuals of there own were answered first off , however the Hairy Hounds picked up three bonus points to give a round score of 5-2 and level the scores at eleven each. Round three saw what is now the customary collapse of the Hairy Hounds. The Shoulder of Mutton crew scored on three of there own and picked up three bonus points, with the Hairy hounds answering the one solitary question of there own for a round score of 2-8. Stink Round four had the Shoulder jump to four and stick, with the Hairy Hounds having a debate on the Nordic cross which had two many possibilities for them to decide on and they elected to stick on two. So the Half time totals were Hare and Hounds 15 Shoulder of Mutton 23.
Round five saw the Hairy Hounds attempt a comeback at 7-4, but then the two parters of Round six had the Hairy Hounds drop a question and the Shoulder pounced for a bonus point to bolster there lead and give a round score of 6-9. Round seven individuals saw both teams score an excellent total full house at eight points all. Round eight saw a slight recovery from the Hairy Hounds again to take the round 6-2 but the damage had been done earlier in the contest and it wasn’t enough to change to lead and the final result was Hare and Hounds 42 Shoulder of Mutton 46. So the Hairy Hounds continue there bid for there usual position of mid table mediocrity. The Shoulder have been getting stronger thanks to squad additions, are these new boys Wolves dressed as Mutton? They will in the Hairy Hounds opinion be a significant threat in the Cup, although the Hairy Hounds did manage to take the beer leg and Match of the week.
Third of the four games saw the form team of St. Mary’s B’s visit the SunDial Walmersley Rd, the Harem have not had the rub of the questions recently and Helen reports the team are quite despondent but they were against a side that has scored heavily since the turn of the year and is one of the cup favourites on this form. They top scored this week also, to post a 32-54 result. Team of the week St. Mary’s B’s.
Final Game this week saw the Stopes Tavern Elves visit the Rose and Crown Starling and tactics came into play when the Elves had a confab and decided to go second, Round One saw both teams open with a total full house, second round the first individual saw the Elves drop there first question on Musical Duo’s by unsurprisingly missing Foster and Allen with only there first names as clues! Bob had picked up Chas and Dave for the home side with Surnames as clues. Reigning Monarch’s and Human Skeleton were picked up by both sides. The fourth category of Museums proved difficult for both sides with Terry dropping, for the home side, the Ashmole museum and it was picked up for a bonus by Ian Brealey but then dropping the British museum himself as Hans Sloane’s collections wasn’t recognised by either side. Round Score 6-5 for totals of 14-13. Round three has been an absolute disaster for one side or the other in most recent games and this was no different as the Elves did not have the rub of the green this week scoring on just the first question and dropping the rest missing Priestley’s Oxygen and Iran’s Shah both picked up for bonuses with the final answer of Lena Horne stumping both sides. The Rose dropped the third question when they couldn’t recall the Rudolph as a trampolining exercise and the Elves couldn’t either. Round score a telling 8-2 for totals of 22-15. Round Four Stink or twist with Cross as the round clue, saw the Rose score a full house eight thanks to Bob who grabbed the eight points with the name of Bernard Braden’s wife. The Elves had the stinker first question and couldn’t recognise Eleanor (of Castille) so nulled the round as is the recent fashion in a lot of the matches at the one point stage. Half time totals were Rose and Crown Starling 30 Stopes Tavern 15.
Round five began badly for the Elves when they dropped the way of St. James destination of Santiago de Compostela but only by a whisker! It wasn’t picked up by the Rose. Both teams scored on the next but the Rose dropped the partner question to the Elves of the Symbol of St. James worn by pilgrims, by missing the Scallop Shell, again not picked up round score was six a-piece. Round Six two parters saw both teams opt for two on the first but then the Rose could not pick up the welsh rugby team opting for Dragons instead of Ospreys to which the Elves grabbed the single bonus point, all other questions were safely answered at the two point stage for a round score of 6-9 and totals of 42-30. Round Seven the second individual round, saw the Elves Roger drop the dance origins of the Rumba and the answer of Cuba was also missed by the Rose Bob for a bonus, Terry then missed Commonwealth PM’s address in Canada but it was grabbed for a bonus by the Elves Ian again, all other questions on Mexican Food and London Markets were successfully answered by both sides for a round score of 6-7. With the Rose side needing to answer just one question correctly for the win they started poorly by missing the first two answers of the Saudi Arabian world record cap holder at football and also missing E4’s Skins both of these were crucially missed for bonus points by the Elves of Paul Gardner, Roger Bolt, Bert Bullough and Ian Brealey for bonus points. With the last two questions seeing a reversal of fortunes as the Elves missed the Iranian Footballer and Bellamy’s People from bbc2 and a round score of four each saw the Rose end up victorious with a final scoreline of, Rose and Crown 52 Stopes Tavern 41. The Beer leg with Tim Green coming in for Paul, went down to the Tie break question for the second week running at the Rose, as both teams had identical answer sheets with the Rose emerging as victors again by the odd miles or hundred.
The leagues other sides having a free week were Radcliffe Cricket Club, St. Mary’s A’s, PackHorse and Heap Bridge Social Club.

Week 22 07-03-2011
Again, just four matches this week, the action will still be competitive.
First match has the Rose and Crown Starling visiting the Heap Bridge Social Club and the Phoenix nights, The Knights form has been slipping recently and the free week may have done them a favour, so the visitors will have to be on there guard but a return to form last week may be enough to secure runners up spot by taking this match but only just!
SunDial Walmersly Rd play host to the league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club and the form book says the Cricketers will win this and retain the Champions title, however if the SunDial has a return to the confidence of early year they could cause a surprise but they will have to have the rub of the green.
Rose and Crown Ramsbottom host St. Mary’s OscArs with the visitors playing well this may well be a victory for them if they play there cards right but any slip in form will cause the Tigers to roar away.
Potentially match of the week is at the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village who has the PackHorse Affetside visiting, with the home side installed as an early cup favourite the PackHorse may want to show there bandit cup handicap is also just that. A close match and a draw is a distinct possibility if the visitors are on form.
Stopes Tavern Elves are making balaclava’s for there cup campaign, Ramsbottom Cricketers are buying Hoodies, St. Mary’s B’s are sharpening there muggers knives and the Hare and Hounds are drinking good beer this week.
A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on this website at www.buryquizleague.co.uk
