PHIL'S COMMENTS

I apologize for the late posting of the results and table updates but a close family bereavement and funeral organization ate into time. The quiz league had a full fixture list this penultimate week and had set of results with a few surprises.
First match to report in was the match at the Royal Hotel where the Horsemen were hosting the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom. The Horsemen returned to some form with a win against the ailing Tigers, who look to be playing for the Cup going down to a 48-39 scoreline.
The second match to report in on the evening was the SunDial Walmersley Rd who had the rested Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village visiting Helen’s Harem. The Harem who had beaten the League leaders R.C.C. last week came down to earth with a bump as the Shoulder took charge of the match and ran out 31-49 winners.
Match of the Week and team of the week yet again goes to a match involving the league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club who were visiting Stopes Tavern in this weeks Radcliffe Derby and in an excellent match that went down to the very last question, the result was a draw at 48-48, team of the week Stopes Tavern.
Fourth match was the visit of in form Heap Bridge Social Club to the Ramsbottom Cricket Club, the Phoenix Knights of Heap Bridge were on a three match winning streak in there best form of the season and had hopes of making it four in a row but the high flying Rammy Cricket Club had other ideas as they need to win to keep up the pressure at the top of the table, in a close match the Cricketers breathed a sigh of relief at the end when they just managed to win with a score of 48-45.
Final match took place at the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook who had the Rose and Crown Starling visiting in what on paper was the top match of the week firstly, Yosemite Sam reports poetically:-
In a season that’s not yet in print,
It’s a long race not just a sprint.
The Starlings weren’t doing quite so well,
And they retreated into their shell
The progression seemed fairly slow.
And they remained fifth during the snow.
But with no replays, I do declare,
The tortoise has beaten the Hare.

The Rose Starling elected to go first and in the first round dropped the only points, when Kieran who had written Ottoman for the empire said Turkey, however the Hairy Hounds missed the bonus point for a round score of 8-6. Round two individuals had categories of Gruesome U.S. television families, punctuation, salads and art galleries. The first questions were negotiated with ease by Lee and Yosemite respectively. Punctuation saw Dave drop his brackets and Parethesis was snapped up by Anne. Both Kieran and the mighty Cannon dropped the Salads (as in real life?) but the mighty Cannon grabbed a bonus Ceasar to redeem his diet. Art Galleries also passed Terry and Peter M. by but Peter also grabbed a bonus bankside for the Hairy Hounds. Round score 4-5 for 11-12 totals. Round three saw the lead change hands for the only time in the match surprisingly, as the Hairies dropped the Cyanide to poison there first points, luckily not picked up though and after both teams safely netted points on the second, the third and fourth questions proved difficult for both teams on there own but both picked up bonus points with Fox news and Lief Ericsson but missing out on Strychnine and Yemen, round score 3-5 for totals of 15-16. Round four the Stink round saw both teams enjoy the theme of Rock around the Clock, both raced to four points although Hayden’s clock symphony had all but Peter Maguire baffled for the Hairy Hounds , however both stuck on four when the Rose missed W.H. Auden’s funeral Blues and the Scarlet pimpernel had the Hairies swaying in the breeze. Half time scores Hare and Hounds 19 Rose and Crown 20.
Round five saw the Hairy Hounds drop the first question and the Rose snapped up the bonus point however the only other points dropped was the I.C.C. Mace earn’t by the achieving top Cricket ranking, which nobody knew. Round score 6-7. Round six two part questions saw the only points dropped on the first question which baffled the Hairy Hounds and led them to answer a country instead of the Mugabe name, this was snapped up by the Rose for a bonus point, all other questions were answered for two points.
Round seven individuals had categories of U.S. Presidents, Alcoholic drinks, Footware and Cosmetic Treatments both teams had little problem with this round and a maximum was achieved by both sides. Total scores 39-42. Round eight had all to play for both teams dropped the first questions however Bitumen scored a bonus for the Rose and the first women to break the Sound Barrier by flight (not calling the kids in for tea) went unrecognised. With the only other points dropped being the Hyper Sonic question also picked up for a bonus point by the Rose the final round score was 4-8 for a final total of Hare and Hounds 43 Rose and Crown Starling 50.
The Beer leg was won by the Hairy Hounds but the tie break had the Rose picking up the Shrapnel. Jill read the questions magnificently throughout.
The enigma St. Mary’s B were resting this week and chewing there nails for results.

Week 22 5-3-12
Week Twenty two is the final week of the regular season with teams having a lot to play for the only team relaxing is the Royal Horsemen who have two weeks off now until their cup defense starts but look at the draw below………… final repeat from last year!!!!
Back to the league, one of two top matches has to be Rose and Crown Starling hosting the rested Enigma St. Mary’s B both teams are playing on top form and it may go down to a final round shootout but the visitors are the hungry ones and may just pip the Roses.
Match two has Rose and Crown Rammy hosting perhaps the final league match for the SunDial and Helen’s Harem this could well turn out to be match of the week and may end up a draw with both teams having an up and down season both teams could just pip each other but a draw is the prediction.
Match three has the Shoulder of Mutton hosting Stopes Tavern, the tavern Elves will be finishing on a high after last weeks draw and may just have enough to overcome the Shoulder Wolves but another close encounter is the prediction.
Match four has the top match perhaps of the season with the battle of the Cricket Clubs hosted by Radcliffe, the Radcliffe league leaders have seen there form slip recently but this is the crucial big match with Rammy having a match in hand that will be played this week the result could be an away win……….. perhaps but only just.
Final match has the Heap Bridge Phoenix Knights hosting the Hare and Hounds both teams are ending the season in middling form but the hosts are scoring well and this will be very close a draw is not far off but the visitors by a point only….. maybe.
