PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week22
The handicap cup is at the quarter-final stage and the surviving teams are hunting the season's final piece of silverware after the Easter break.

Match of the week had to be the top of the table clash between league runners-up Radcliffe Cricket Club and champions Rose and Crown Starling, with the champions ceding just a 1 point start on the handicap. Phil Dodd's team batting at home saw the lead increase to six points by the end of round 1 and had the visiting Rose Starling on the back foot straight away. But a good individual round saw the champions start to eat away at the lead. By the halfway mark the scores were back at the starting advantage - single point only. The second half saw the Rose Starling take a two point lead with a full house and bonus on round 5. Further gains on round 6 with Lee Sawbridge and the legend Wally Warrington giving 4 point answers, and another 9 point individual round saw the lead stretched, which could not be clawed back by the Cricketers, although they came back to win the final round. With Bob Selby and Kieran Goldsbrough also on form for the league champions, the final match score was 41-51 on the night and with the handicap 42-51.

Close run thing for match of the week was the battle of the Roses at Ramsbottom, where the scores were level with the handicap going into the final round. The Rose and Crown Bury had to give 3 point start to the home side on the night and it gave last years cup runners-up Rose and Crown Rammy side just enough confidence to scrape home with a match score of 38-37 and final handicap result 41-37.

Heap Bridge Social Club had to cede just a 3 point advantage over the visiting Sun Dial side, and the Phoenix nights' side are formidable opponents on home ground. This proved to be true as they ran out 53-34 winners match score, with a handicap result of 53-37. They must now be cup favourites if form holds.

Final quarter-final result was the Swan and Railway A hosting the Pack Horse Affetside. The home side might have been favourite to take this if Mavis had administered her tonic but the visiting Pack Horse side has had a league season to forget this year and Mike Pinder fancies a piece of silverware for his team's endeavours. The Pack lads are hitting form at the right time to progress and overcome a four point starting deficit to win on the night 29-39 - handicap result 33-39.

Week 23
Semi-final week of the cup and the drawn fixtures have thrown up an interesting pair of matches. Top match is the semi-final between the two favourites on handicap and season's overall form, between the Rose and Crown Rammy(9) hosting Heap Bridge Social Club(11). If this had been drawn the other way then Heap Bridge would have been hot favourites for both match and cup but the Phoenix nights' lads away from home are sometimes found wanting form-wise. A two point start in the visitors' favour may be enough but Peter Taylor's Rammy side are looking to go one cup place better than last year and may just pip it. Could it be on the tie break question, it might just come to that!

Second semi-final has a local derby with the league champions Rose and Crown Starling(0) hosting the Pack Horse Affetside bandits(12). The Rose may win this on the night but the handicap is a formidable barrier to overcome. Expect the Pack Horse to be wearing dusty Mexican costumes and senorita Sue Pinder to be swinging boleros as the night unfolds, but the home side have a magnificent seven plus Phil. So you never know.

Cup final and Presentation night is at the Heap Bridge Social Club on Monday 30th April, 8.30pm start. Contributions to the raffle would be welcomed.
