PHIL'S COMMENTS
The balmy nights of early spring saw the first round proper of the handicap knockout cup and some fine contests were expected on paper.
Match of the week was as predicted the game between Radcliffe Cricket club and Heap Bridge Social Club with the Cricketers ceeding seven points to the Phoenix Lads,it looked to be very tough for Phil Dodd’s men if the visitors play to form. On the night it almost proved true as going into the last round scores were level but the Cricket club just managed to overcome the odds and advance to the semi-finals with a 44-41 tally at the end.
Team of the week this week goes to Rose and Crown Ramsbottom who were playing strongly fancied for the trophy Swan and Railway B’s, and giving them a point start. Peter Taylor must have had his tigers in training as they marched onwards with ease and a 41-27 final score. Rose and Crown Ramsbottom must now be cup favourites.
In another close encounter and almost match of the week, Stopes played host to the Swan & Railway A’s and if the Swans team of John Harris, John Heenan, Julie Keenan and Alan Smith could re-produce their form from the last league match, the game would be a very close affair. With a nine point handicap to overcome, the Stopes lads have to be at their very best to get something out of the game.
The Swans elected to go second and the early exchanges were even. It appeared we had yet again been presented with a University Challenge standard set of questions and in a very low scoring 1st half identical scoring saw the Stopes team make no impression into the handicap. Richer pickings were had in a very difficult Stick or Twist round with both sides drawing blanks. With a miserly 13 points a piece real time, the Swans lead 22 to 13 at the half way stage.
Stopes re-fuelled their glasses and prayed for a change of fortunes!!! Round 5 saw a 2 point advantage to the home side to reduce the deficit to 7. the Stopes clawed back a further 3 points in the four or two point round and the momentum appeared to be swinging in favour of the Taverners??!!!
With only a four point lead, John and Co only had to match Stopes over the final 2 rounds to ensure victory, but the home side of Bert Bullough, Paul Gardner, Tim Green and Roger Bolt have developed a winning formula in recent games, by scoring heavily in the closing stages and tonight’s game would prove no exception. The second individual Rd gave Stopes maximum points to a 4 point reply to see the game go all square as we entered the last round.
A final push to the winning post, saw Stopes sneak up on the inside Rail to win by a very short head. In a nail biting finish, Stopes took the final Rd 7 points to 4 for a final score of 39 – 34. Stopes are now installed as second favourites for the cup.
The Rose and Crown Starling had the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook visiting and the home side had some trepidation with the hairy hounds having a five point start, as league games are normally very close. The first round was very close but no one on the home side could remember what the sport of poona became and the hounds had a bonus. And everyone was ostracized with the pottery question. The hairy hounds had increased there lead by one 6-12, into the second round and the home side started well and continued with all but one scoring, yep guess who, and the hounds having a ‘mare as they blanked, it would prove crucial. Nine points back on the round, the rose dismissed the handicap and took the lead 15-12. Round three saw the hound close to one point when Foo fighters and Wally’s small cake didn’t bake it (petit four =small oven).Stick or twist saw honours even at two apiece to make the halftime score 22-21 in favour of the Rose. After refreshments was purchased and fresh air was taken, round five saw the home side pull out a three point lead again, in round six, the four or two questions, the rose increased the lead when they grabbed a bonus point with Fats Waller, taking the safe route gave the home side 9 to the hounds 6 to have a gap of six points, the hounds needed the Rose to have a poor second individual round but only climbing plants stumped the home side and the visitors had dropped another two behind, the difference was now eight with only the final round to go, the home side dropped only one question and picked up a bonus to win the round. The final score of 50-40 doesn’t do justice to a very tight match, the visiting side of Peter Maguire, Ian Openshaw, Dave Wright and Andy Ainsworth will have to retreat to the comfort of the beer festival at home base. The home side had Lee Sawbridge and Kieran Goldsbrough on form with the legend Wally Warrington supporting. Helen Goldsbrough almost destroyed the night by celebrating and making confetti of the score sheet and the author’s notes thank god for selotape.
Mar 23th Cup week 3 semi finals
The draw for the semis have produced some interesting fixtures after last week’s results both my tips for the finals have been knocked out. First match has Stopes Tavern host the Cricket Club in a Radcliffe derby but with an eight point advantage to chase, Phil Dodd’s men will have to be on top form to haul it back and it may prove to be a bridge to far but if close second favourites for the trophy Stopes suffer from nerves or panic the Cricket club will come out on top. Home win just!!!!
Second semi is the war of the Roses, with Rose Starling hosting the Rose Rammy, both teams have had to play well to qualify to get this far but Rose Rammy overcame a lot of peoples favourites for the trophy last week and with a four point start that may prove to be the crunch factor. The home side have been fortunate to hit teams that struggled on a couple of rounds only which allowed them to cancel the handicap gap, but Rose Rammy may prove to be to consistent, close game, but Taylors tigers may go through by one or two points only!!!!
The draw for the semi-finals was made by the SunDial Harem and is as follows:-
Stopes Tavern (8) v Radcliffe cc (0)
Rose Starling (3) v Rose Rammy (7)
Both games to be played at Wembley or home venues which ever is cheaper at normal start times.
All teams please note the cup final is at Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook on Monday 30 th MARCH.
Presentation night, draw and general quiz night at Heap Bridge Social Club, supper provided on APRIL 6th . Usual and unusual draw prizes please all ideas welcome.
