PHIL'S COMMENTS
|
The weather has been positively balmy this week, great for fresh air lovers and the positive note had all teams in competitive mood for the final week of the league season. First match this week was the game at Stopes tavern where the Hairy Hounds were the visitors, Yosemite Sam reports; The Hairy Hounds barked in for the final match of the at the elves venue , the hounds elected to go firsthand snarled there way to a 7-6 lead at the end of round one. However this woke up the Elves who took the next two rounds 7-5and 7-6. Stink or twist round saw both tams stick on 4 points. Half time flat caps all round (except for the leprechaun),the Elves led hairy hounds 24-22.Round Five went 8-6 to the Elves Two parters were took 8-6 by the hairy hounds. Second individuals went back to the Elves 7-4 leaving the Hairy Hounds chasing a six point deficit going into the last round, with tensions mounting the hounds took the round 4-8 but it meant the hound still finished two points adrift. The elves winning 51-49 and showed why they are this years runners –up , the Hound cleared up the beer leg and would like a special mention for “whispering Bob Harris” the question master on the night. With the new champions Radcliffe Cricketers hosting the final derby of the season against Swan and Railway B. The Swan elected to go first on the night and in a match that was close, the Cricketers pulled away and took the match 47-42. The Rose and Crown Ramsbottom had the SunDial Walmersly Road visiting and Taylor’s tigers faced Barney and the Harem in good form as in a close match they could not hold the visitors and in the last round the Harem secured the win, score 42-46. The Swan and Railway A had the Ramsbottom Cricket Club bowling in and in a crucial final league game the Swans were on top form and had the backing of Mavis’s tonic as the high flying Cricket club were pegged back and succumbed to the Swan’s with a 44-41 score, another lap of honour of the bar for the home side, team of the week. With the final match at the PackHorse Affetside who had the Phoenix Knights of Heap Bridge Social club charging up the hill and the game was close through out being decided in the final round. both teams warm up for a cup run it appears and the phoenix knights (damn them), look to be on top form as the result went there way just 50-51, Match of the week. Roll of honour Champions---- Radcliffe Cricket Club. Runners up---- Stopes Tavern. Congratulations must go to all teams this season for a very competitive league from top to bottom, it has been excellent all the way and a pleasure to be a part of. Many Thanks to our question provider 21 Century Quiz limited who have provided excellent and telling fayre throughout the season, thanks Ray. Could the Cricket Club please return the Shield to the Rose and Crown Starling where the newly polished trophies are awaiting distribution elsewhere this season. The Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook courtesy of Landlord and landlady Andy and Lynne Grant have agreed to hold the Cup final again this year on Monday April 19TH , many thanks go to Andy and Lynne and Ian Openshaw. Presentation night Quiz and Raffle is at Heap Bridge Social club on Monday 26th April, suggestion for prizes are welcome. Week 23 Monday 22nd Mar 2010 Handicap Cup PRELIM Rnd Last week’s predictions were just as good as the previous week lets hope this weeks predictions go the same way especially one match in particular. The preliminary cup round has the now traditional appearance Match one, of the Rose and Crown Starling who travel to the Heap Bridge Social club, with what this season could be a insurmountable handicap of six points looking at the league table. The Phoenix knights are always a tough team at home and if Neville is on form, the visitors will struggle to haul back the deficit and the prediction is the home side will end the Rose’s season by a point or two. In what on paper could be match of the week, Match two, Stopes Tavern host the Swan and Railway b’s but give the visitors a start of three, and the visitors have been quietly going about there business this season but the cup is a target they aim for, the elves are still on top form though and will not be phased by the handicap, close game but ……the visitors by just a point perhaps. Final game in the preliminary round Match Three, is at the Packhorse Affetside where the visitors are the league Champions Radcliffe Cricket Club. The Cricketers have to give the home side a ten point start and if the home side get away to a good start, it may be the handicap will be too much to overcome, but any slip ups will see that handicap disappear fast. Phil Dodd’s visitors may well take the match on the night but the home side may just prevail with the handicap or will the tie break question have to be used? All the other sides have a bye to round one. MONDAY 29TH MARCH 1ST ROUND HANDICAP CUP Ramsbottom Cricket Club (+10) v Winner match 2 Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook (+7) v Swan and Railway A (+14) Rose and Crown Ramsbottom (+13) v Winner match 1 Winner match 3 v SunDial, Walmersly Rd (+17) The anti post current form guide is as follows: Rose Rammy burglars are still favourites, second favourites are the SunDial Harem with Swan A Bandits. A good each way bet is the PackHorse Highwaymen, the Hairy Hounds hoodies and the Evil Elves subject to a late surge by the Swan B Ram raiders. All other teams have an evens money chance at this time except for the Rank outsiders current Cup Holders Rose Starling Suffragettes. Semi- finals will be drawn later. |
