PHIL'S COMMENTS
The week has just four matches scheduled and again controversy reigns as complaints have flooded in over the degree of difficulty balance of the questions in the second half of this weeks quiz, it appears as the teams going first in the second half scored heavily in round six, the two part questions whilst the other questions didn’t.
As it happens the League Championship was also decided on the night, Congratulations to Radcliffe Cricket Club on retaining the title, there results since the turn of the year have meant the title is thoroughly deserved.
This week the Radcliffe Cricket club travelled to the SunDial Walmersley Road to face Helens Harem and in a twist of fate there first round cup opponents also. With the match being competitive at the start the Cricket club took charge in the second half and ran away with the match, to retain the league title and win with a 40-57 scoreline and even overcome there cup handicap can they repeat it in the cup?... time will tell but the SunDial are a cup favourite and the Harem beat the Cricket Club in the beer leg on the tie break to prove a future match may have a different outcome perhaps….
The game at Rose and Crown Ramsbottom saw the St. Mary’s OscAr’s visiting and in another match where the second half proved telling the Tigers took charge and scored heavily to win 55-31.
Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe village had the PackHorse Affetside visiting and again proved they are looking to be top of the list of cup favourites by running away with the second half of the match and show how much the handicap has favoured them with a score of 55-38.
Final league match this week was the Heap Bridge Social Club hosting the Rose and Crown Starling, who were the only side before this week who could have in theory caught the Radcliffe Cricket Club. The Knights had a full squad out on for the evening and chose a team of Derek Lord, Barrie Birch, Neville Chadwick and Steve Henry.
The Rose and Crown decided to go first on the night, both teams started well with only the clueless New York central park foiling both teams in the first round to give the Phoenix Knights a two point advantage with 8-6. Round two the first individuals saw Anne score for the Rose with Farms in Literature but Neville slipped up with his Cold Comfort Farm and it was also missed for the bonus. Both teams then scored with Gibberish pop hits but Chariots saw Kieran score with Ben Hur but Derek missed for the home side with Hera also missed for a bonus. The Final “folklore mini cars” saw Jayne miss the Riley Elf by misunderstanding the question Steve hovered up the bonus point and scored with his own imp for the knights the round score was 5-6 and totals of 13-12. Round Three saw both teams miss just one question each both were picked up for bonus points the first one was friends TV theme song which had Steve tied in knots for the home Knights but just couldn’t get to the title, Jayne a huge friends fan had snapped it up as the question was first asked and the boxer Joe Cockle was missed by the Rose only to be snapped up by the Knights for a round score of seven each. Round four Stink or twist saw the Rose stumped only by the river Cole to stick on 4 but the knights could not recall Viscount Severn, eddies lad, and stuck on two for a change of lead at the halfway mark and scores of Heap Bridge Social Club 22 Rose and Crown 23.
Round Five saw both teams score on question one then struggle on question two the Knights missed the Minotaur Beetle whilst the Rose missed the Straits of Johur bridge and then drop the Cockchafer beetle also none scored bonuses for a round score of 6-4 and the Knights regain the lead 28-27. Round six two parters saw both teams score a safe two on the first the Knights then scored a maximum four with Leslie Chartteris but the Rose missed out completely with Wallace which was picked up for a single bonus, safe twos went on the third but the Indus river was missed by the both teams and a final Mekong was a safe two for the Rose side . Round score 9-6, totals 37-33. Second individual round seven saw both teams score on the Heels round and both teams fail on the European Vehicle Reg’s however Barrie picked up a bonus for Belarus with both teams getting there Jazz Nicknames….. nice. The final category of world war one vets saw the Knights score with Jutland and pick-up a bonus Pashendale as the Rose dropped the last. Round Score 8-4. Both teams dropped just one question in the last with the Rose missing out on Unlucky Alan from the fast show …bugger it, and the Knights snatched up a bonus but then missing out on the fighting Irish. Final Score and team of the week award goes to the winners Heap Bridge Social Club 52 Rose and Crown 43. The Rose then took a five a side beer leg to gain some solace.
A friendly match took place at the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook. Yosemite Sam reports:-
In the second friendly of the season between the Hairy Hounds and the Stopes Tavern Elves, the Stopes Elves elected to go first and led 21-24 at the halfway mark (the Hairy Hounds losing the third round as usual but only by two this time). The second half saw the Hairy Hounds turn around the score by racking up second half points totals of Hairy Hounds 31 to Stopes Elves 18, giving final totals of Hare and Hounds 52 Stopes Tavern 42.( we wont mention the Elves missing answering the PRINTING question, which the Hounds picked up as a bonus). However Stopes Tavern Elves enjoyed the beer and took the leg.
The leagues other sides having a free week were Ramsbottom Cricket Club, St. Mary’s B’s. Special thanks must go to John Heenan this week who volunteered to travel and pick up the questions himself when Mr Postie mis-laid them apparently and without whom this week would have been abandoned.
Could all trophy Holders please return them to the Rose and Crown Starling please ready for re-engraving etc.
Here are the handicap ratings for the cup:-

Week 23 14-03-2011
With the league title decided, just two weeks of league matches remain and four matches this week, the action looks to be very competitive again.
First match looks to be on paper probably match of the season when both of the form sides and Heavy Scorers clash in the Radcliffe Derby as the Cricket Club host St. Mary’s B’s, with the title now wrapped up and in the bag the hosts may let there guard slip but St. Mary’s are still in with a chance at the top for runners up and will want to finish on a high. Even if the Cricketers play well this should be close and St. Mary’s may just take this by a point.
St. Mary’s OscArs host the Ramsbottom Cricketers and another close match is in the offing however the hosts may just take this again by only a point.
PackHorse Affetside host the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook and with traditional friendly match rivalry missing this year, Sue and the PackHorse lads may just want to prove a point this week and grab a victory but the Hairy Hounds have been practising and may take this by a point or two.
Final match of the week is the visit of Heap Bridge Social Club to the Stopes Tavern with the Knights tour bus making there longest journey (especially as half the team live in Rochdale) the journey may be a route to far for the knights as the Elves are gearing up for the cup but it will be close if the knights hold form and a draw is not out of the question.
Rose and Crown Rammy are making cudgels, SunDial are masking up and the Shoulder are tuning up there getaway car this week ready for the Cup whilst Rose Starling are on a free week licking there wounds.
With the Cup draw now published early favourites are Shoulder of Mutton, with St. Mary’s A and Rose Rammy close behind. Followed by SunDial, Rammy Cricket Club, PackHorse, Heap Bridge, Stopes Tavern, St. Mary’s B, and Hare and Hounds. Radcliffe Cricket Club comes next and the complete outsiders are Rose and Crown Starling.
