PHIL'S COMMENTS

The quiz league had a full fixture list this final league week and results were crucial to all positions at the top especially, with all positions mathematically possible to be changed all the teams were nervously trying to calculate possibilities.
However because of the match in hand, at the Shoulder v Rammy C.C. which took place on wednesday the tables will not reflect this on the website due to automatic table update but the Monday night went as below.
First match to report in was the match at the Radcliffe Cricket Club who had the Ramsbottom Cricket Club, in what was the test match of the season. Mathematically the visitors could have won the league at this stage as they had a match in hand, however they would have had to tally up a record score in both remaining matches, to take the title away from the hosts. As it turned out the hosts who have seen some poor results in recent weeks, hit top form again and they gave no quarter to take the title unquestionably with a 58-29 win, congratulations to Phil Dodd and the lads on retaining the title.
The second match to report in on the evening was at the SunDial Walmersley Rd who were visiting the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom, with these two sides being arguably cup favourites Helen’s Harem tamed the timid Taylor’s Tigers with a 30-37 point win. This result immediately puts the Tigers in danger of winning the wooden spoon.
Third match to report in was the game at Heap Bridge Social Club who had Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook visiting the Phoenix Knights and the Knights, who have held the wooden spoon position for most of the league season, have been resurgent in recent weeks and the Phoenix could rise from the ashes of the bottom of the table at the dying embers of the league season with a good winning score. Yosemite Sam reports:-
In the final week of the league season the Hairy Hounds wandered down to Heap Bridge. The Heap Bridge Phoenix Knights have been propping up the league since October 3rd , but 3 wins in the past 4 weeks, has seen a 200% increase in their points total, which has put them in touching distance of the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom who has seen there own form plummet recently.
With Captain Sensible away shuttling his cock in Birmingham, a Committee decision to go first was made by the Hairy Hounds. Who then regretted that when the Socialites full housed Round one to take an 8-6 lead.
The Hairy Hounds nicked back a pointing round two by taking the round narrowly 3-4. Rounds three and stink round four saw the Knight Clubbers score double the Hairy Hounds points scored in each round, with scores of 6-3 and 4-2. Giving halfway totals of Heap Bridge Social Club 21 Hare and Hounds 15.
Round Five saw a complete reversal of fortunes when the Phoenix Knights drew a complete blank, and the Hairy Hounds took advantage and fought back picking up a couple of bonus points to take the round 0-6 drawing level at 21 points all.
Round six two parters saw the Heap Bridge Knights pile the pressure on again when they took the round 11-6. Round seven turned out to be the Hairy Hounds turn to draw a blank, so it was a requiem for them, whilst the Knights socials added another five to there tally. Round eight finished an honourable five points apiece, giving a result of Heap Bridge Social Club 42 Hare and Hounds 32.
So depending on the Rose Rammy v SunDial Result, the Heap Bridge Phoenix Knights could have lost themselves the wooden spoon.
As per usual the handicaps were announced early, which meant that the Hairy Hounds have after achieving their lowest score of the season counted for absolutely nothing, but just continued there run of defeats. The Hairy Hounds after challenging for a possible second place just four weeks ago, have to settle for their usual well established mid table mediocrity. The Birdman had struggled with Latin names and failed to score at lower division football grounds, earning himself a new nickname of Citrus Citrus.
The Beer leg was also grabbed by the thirsty Knights.
Note: By my preliminary Calculations the Phoenix Knights have indeed arisen from the bottom place ashes and saved themselves from the wooden spoon and have managed to therefore award it to the Rose Rammy.
Fourth match took place at the Shoulder of Mutton who had the Stopes Tavern Elves visiting and the final score does not reflect on what was a tight game.
At Half time both teams were tied, “even stevens” on twenty points apiece and it was only after the contentious round seven that the Shoulder began to pull away on scores and then round Eight completed the win, with a score of 47-35.
The contentious points in round seven which had most teams and all matches complaining was the football questions 7a and 7b the contentious statement was inclusion of the word “championship” when the sides in the answer have never played in the newly formed championship and have only been football league teams it was dutifully noted and forwarded on to the questions supplier. It did cause use of spare questions on the night.
The final match of the evening took place at the Rose and Crown Starling who had the enigma St. Mary’s B’s Radcliffe visiting with both teams in contention for honours mathematically, it turned out to be match of the week.
The Enigma elected to go second and Rose Starling went first answering the first three questions correctly , with the Enigma missing only the flame haired Esmeralda, Maureen O’Hara also missed for a bonus, the Rose dropped only the last question when the monocled mutineer passed by both teams unseen for a round score of 6-6.
Round two individuals had categories of Subtitled Books, Famous Belgians, Money Slang and The Planets. Question one was safely negotiated by both sides and question two was exactly the opposite as the Belgians passed both teams by, Franck and Simenon. Question three saw the Monkey pass by Bob for the Rose and missed for the bonus also, with the Moons of Neptune going unrecognised by both teams the round score was four each for totals of 10-10.
Round three saw the Rose take the lead, they picked up a bonus Kiev dropping the impossibly named Quincunx, with the Enigma also dropping the Carfax, missed also for the bonus the round score was 7-4.
Round four Stink round had a theme of Left and Right, the Rose raced to two points and was sunk by the Navy Lark’s Leslie Phillips, to stick on two. The Enigma had no problems with this round and grabbed an excellent eight points to take the round and the lead with a halfway scoreline of Rose and Crown 19 St. Mary’s B’s 22.
Round five saw the old nemesis haunt the enigma immediately when pop’s Prince was passed over for a bonus, this set the tone for the round as the Enigma drew a blank completely missing Blackbird, grabbed for a bonus point and Sam Mendes and St. Giles which passed everyone by. The Rose dropped two questions also in the round, missing Scorcese by a whisker and Starling, there namesake, by a mile. Round score 6-0, the lead changed hands again.
Round six two part round saw both teams play safe on the first two questions for two points the Enigma then grabbed a max four with Sicily and the Rose played safe again but on the final question the Rose missed J.S. Bach and it was immediately snapped up for a bonus along with there own safe two, this lead to a lead change again as the round score of 6-11, saw totals of 31-33.
Round seven second individuals saw categories of Football Grounds, Car Registrations, Ballet and Church Services. With choices taking a long time to sort out on this round, it was no surprise when complaints rained down after question one however the Rose picked up a bonus before dropping there own. With Car registrations causing both teams frustration and the Ballet also dancing away unchallenged only the Studious Church members managed to further challenge the scorer in this round but the 3-2 score had brought the Rose back to within a point, at 34-35 going into the final round.
Both teams had good final rounds and although the tie went down to the final questions of the season the match was decided on the first of the round when both teams missed there own but crucially the Rose grabbed a Wanderers bonus whilst the Enigma missed there chance when Mayo went begging. Round score 6-6, for final scores of Rose and Crown 41 St. Mary’s B’s 41.
With the Rose taking both the Beer leg and the tie break question prizes the festivities and celebrations were begun, with congratulations passed to St. Mary’s on a good season and securing the runners up position in the league.
Royal Horseman were stabled this week preparing for the cup.
Final match of the league season took place on Wednesday night when the game in hand from the first week of the season took place with Shoulder of Mutton hosting Ramsbottom Cricket Club, Steven Greenhalgh reports:-
In a tight competitive fixture the shoulder managed to establish a 5 point cushion at half time, after the lead had changed hands several times.
Despite valiant efforts from Ramsbottom Cricket Club they couldn’t claw their way back into the match and went down to a 48-44 final score but they did take the beer leg on the tie break question.
Following on from Mondays win over the Elves, this completed a five game winning Streak and a pleasing second league season for the Wolves.

Congratulations go to the Radcliffe Cricket Club for retaining the title of League champions.
Congratulations also to League Runners up St. Mary’s Social Club B’s.
Congratulations also to Rose and Crown Ramsbottom in achieving the wooden spoon.

Week 23 12-3-12
Week Twenty two is the first week of the handicap cup with the preliminary round.
Match one has a rammy Derby with the Rose and Crown hosting Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook with both teams showing poor form at the regular seasons ending, on paper this should go to the Hairy Hounds but the Hounds have to give the Rose a five point advantage at the start and the Rose look to have been playing (stealing) for a good handicap most of the season, this will be close at the end and a draw may be in the offing but the Hounds may have a trick in there collar and take the match but only by a point, a genuine point.
Shoulder of Mutton host Heap Bridge Social Club with the visitors having an advantage of four points start this may prove to be crucial as both teams are playing at the top of there form and the Phoenix Knights have managed to manipulate a bandit handicap to steal the cup on paper it appears. Close match without the handicap, the Knights by a point…….just.
Co- Favourites for the cup must be Helen’s Harem at the SunDial who have a six point start over the Rammy Cricket club who dropped from league title contention to finish fourth in two games last week. The cup has maybe come a week too soon for them to catch there breath and the Harem may have enough handicap lead to hold on but a close match will be fought here too.

Cup favourites are SunDial and Rose and Crown Rammy, with Heap Bridge closely following, next are Royal Horsemen, Stopes Tavern, Shoulder of Mutton, Hare and Hounds and Rammy Cricket Club with St. Mary’s B following. The Rose and Crown Starling comes next with the league Champions Radcliffe Cricketers the outsiders.
