PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week23

The semi-finals week of the handicap cup and the penultimate playing week of the season.
With just 4 teams left battling for the remaining silverware of the season and the handicap throwing up advantages for both away teams, nerves on the night for all teams were fraught. The visit of Heap Bridge Social Club to Rose And Crown Rammy was always going to be a close affair and the home side needed a good start to overcome the 2 point advantage they had to hand to the visiting Phoenix Lads. However this was not to be and Peter Taylor's Rammy side had a bad start which increased the visitors' lead, The Phoenix Nights lads have always had indifferent away form all season, when they lose the boost the ex-water rat Neville gives to the team. But this cup week saw the away team stand up and be counted as they fought hard to a win and, as predicted, very close result against an in-form and last year's cup runners-up, Rose Rammy by winning the match on the night 44-45 (with the handicap 44-47). Very well done to both teams involved on a tense and exiting match on the night.
The second semi-final saw the league champions Rose and Crown Starling host local rivals Pack Horse, Affetside. The handicap had given the visitors a 12 point start and on paper this looked to be more than significant because this time last year the Pack Horse were league runners-up. The match started well for the home side and almost half the advantage had been hauled back by the end of round one. Round two individual questions saw the status quo preserved with 7 points each scored. Round three saw Mike Pinder's team gain a full house and a bonus to regain an eleven point advantage. The stick or twist round has seen few eight pointers this season and with the visitors not confident on the four point answer and sticking on two. with the correct answer written down, the home side managed to pull the score back by getting all eight thanks to Grace Darling's Farne Islands. The half time score had the visitors with a 5 point lead. The second half saw the lead whittled down to 2 points after round five and the end of round six with an excellent last second pluck from thin air with the Olympic curling answer by Kieran Goldsbrough, saw the home side finally overcome the handicap and take the lead and the match had turned. A full house plus bonus in the second individual stretched the lead to six points. A dropped first answer saw a glimmer of hope in the final round for Sue and the lads but the Pack team returned the favour with interest and allowed the Rose to further stretch away to a match score of 60-39 (final handicap score of 60-51). The score doesn't reflect the tense atmosphere of the game with Simon Waddington and James Parkin playing alongside Sue and Mike Pinder for the Pack Horse and the Rose team playing with Kieran Goldsbrough, Terry Brierley, Wally Warrington and Phil Musgrove. Ann Thompson question mastering.

Week 24
The Cup final and presentation night is upon us, with a match on the night which could see the final hosts Heap Bridge Social Club walking away with the silverware on the night. The opponents in the shape of League champions Rose Starling never thought that they would get this far in the cup due to the handicap, and with the Phoenix Nights' team having the option of playing Neville, an eleven point handicap is an improbable score to pull back. Phil's squad will all be up for selection with the exception of Bob Selby who has work commitments and will be missed. An exciting final night is in prospect and at the end of the final, food will be available. A general quiz and raffle will be held for all attendees along with the presentation of the trophies for the season's honours by the sponsors M.D., Mr Roger Bolt of Bury Reprographics Ltd.
