PHIL'S COMMENTS

Week 23 April 21rst
With the warm sunshine bathing the country at the end of April in recent years, the semi finals of the quiz normally are good scoring affairs but along with the weather this year, the scores in this years semi’s were very tough and raw and a printing error on the answers in the crucial four or two round didn’t help.
Top match was the hard fought low scoring match at Swan and Railway Radcliffe where the A’s had an eight point handicap start over the visiting Packhorse Affetside. With the Packhorse finishing third in the league a higher handicap should have been expected but Sue Pinder and the lads had somehow engineered a more slightly favourable handicap. The Swans held there ground though under fierce pressure from the Packhorse, with both teams struggling for points the handicap was only overcome in the individual round seven, although the controversial round six football question that had the same printed answer as an earlier question i.e. Oldham Athletic which was plainly incorrect and it should have read Norwich City as the answer didn’t help the home sides mind set. With a final score of 29-33 to the visiting Packhorse who progress to the final the highly entertaining evening ended in a little controversy.
The other semi final was between the Swan and Railways other resident team the B’s visiting local rivals Stopes Tavern, with both teams showing excellent late season form this was expected to go close but with points being hard to find for Paul Gardeners home side who’s run of good form seems to have come to halt right at the crucial time, the in form Swan and Railway B’s powered ahead throughout the match to register a final score of 24-43. Congratulations go to both finalists Swan and Railway Radcliffe B’s and The Pack Horse Affetside.
Week 24 Monday April 28th
With the season coming to a finale with the finals and trophy presentation night at Heap Bridge Social Club, the handicap cup final is going to be a close affair between The Swan and Railway Radcliffe B’S and the Packhorse Affetside, with just a point advantage in favour of The Swan and Railway B’s, the Packhorse’s previous rounds low handicap advantage looks on paper to have evaporated but you can be sure that Sue Pinder and the lads will be on top form for this match but will it be enough as Alec Fontaine’s Swan and Railway team have been the heaviest scoring side in all previous rounds and must just start favourites. An entertaining final is ensured. With the normal raffle and general quiz on the night. Top prize is a digital camera donated by our excellent sponsors Bury Reprographics Ltd.
All teams Please note the final will start at 20-15 prompt on the night. Not at 20-30 as usual.
Handicap Cup Final. (Handicap points in brackets)
Swan and Railway B’s (12) v PackHorse (11)
A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their knowledge against a regular league side that are having free weeks from now till seasons end.
