PHIL'S COMMENTS
With March trying to blow us to kingdom come weather wise it was pleasant to retreat indoors again to the warmth of the local hostelry. This weeks matches are the semi finals stage of the knockout handicap cup and the prospect of the two league topping teams getting dismissed from the competition was very real.
First match on the agenda was the Rose and Crown Starling hosting newly installed cup favourites Rose and Crown Ramsbottom. Rammy had worked there way back to form after a disappointing end to the league campaign which saw them lose out for third place on the last game. The team on the night of Ian Taylor, Margaret Chamberlain, Susan Booth and Martin Baggoley, had the luxury of a four point start on the handicap and elected to go first.
Round one saw the hosts Rose Starling drop there first question on animals when they mixed up continents and the expected trap of the name “ai” (it’s a sloth by the way). Was this a sign of the evening to come! Second set of questions saw the home side off the mark with a bonus point and they didn’t drop another point in the round, with Rammy dropping another question in the round on the active moon of Jupiter question (Io) the handicap had been halved at the end of round one, scores 7-9. Round two individuals saw the visitors picking up just two points, a disaster in the context of the match and the home side scored heavily with seven, and the handicap had been overcome the visitors trailed 14-11. Round three saw the home side take command of the match with a score of eight which included two crucial bonuses and with a Rammy side not purring yet and picking up just four points, the lead for Starling had been stretched to seven points. Round four stick or twist saw both teams settle for the four points when barbed wires inventor stopped the visitors and the high wired Petit, had the home team stumped. Half time scores 26-19.
After halftime replenishments and fresh air breaks, round five saw the both sides score five points, the visitors knew the four or two point round was crucial to them pulling back the lead to give them a chance of retaking the lead. The home side had no choice, given the questions but to play for two points on all the answers, and so it was up to Taylor’s tigers to go for four and the first question was claimed for four points, but with the questions not helping they could only pull back two points on the round, the gap was now five points . The second individual round saw the advantage for the home side stretch back to seven and the visitors were seeing the writing on the wall, with a demoralising last round for the visitors and even the question master had to change his teeth halfway through the Norse myth questions, the scores ended up 53-40 to the Rose and Crown Starling team of Kieran Goldsbrough, Lee Sawbridge, Terry Brierley, and the legend Wally Warrington. The Rose Starling had unexpectantly advanced and are in the final.
Phil Dodd assembled his merry men from the Radcliffe Cricket club and made the shortest of journeys to the Stopes Tavern, to do battle for a cup final place in the second semi-final. On recent form the 8 point handicap in favour of the Stopes seemed generous, but the closest of games was about to unfold.
Phil elected to open the Batting and drew 2 blanks in the opening Rd to a 6 point reply. With the handicap adjustment, Stopes had extended the gap to 10 points and led 14-4. A very difficult individual Rd with a complete ignorance of woman’s world suffrage and US Outlaws real names saw Stopes extend their lead by a further 2 points to 18-6. Phil rallied the troops and bounced back with a 9 point to 6 point Rd 3 and with honours even in Rd 4 the half time score was 28-19 to Stopes.
Stopes had a seemingly comfortable lead and relaxed slightly, But as is often the case with Phil Dodd’s men that’s when they strike and the match pendulum quickly swings back in favour of the Cricketers which is what started to happen. The opening 2 rounds of the second half saw Stopes struggle to add to their total and Phil’s team made the most of Stopes sudden loss of form and pounced scoring 17 points to a 9 point reply. With Stopes 1st half lead suddenly decimated in just 2 rounds and only a point difference remained in the scores at 37-36 the game was suddenly slipping away from the home side.
A nervous individual Rd7 was on the cards, Phil had the scent of Taverner's Blood in his Nostrils. Honours were even on the 1st question, subject Greek Drinks, there are only 2 possible questions and answers, and they fell to script, answers Retsina & Ouzo. Fictional Detectives proved much harder, both sides drew a blank, with a bonus going to the Cricketers. Both Football questions were answered correctly, a potentially difficult last subject of Performing Arts, resulted in Harry Dutton taking an eternity to answer the Cheethams in Manchester! question correctly & saved him a long walk home!!!! Cricketers’ much harder question on a similar School in New York drew a blank.
Stopes took a 2 point advantage into the last Rd and immediately relinquished it with a blank on Norse Mythology; the Cricketers’ expert knowledge of the Planets Suite saw the game draw level on handicap with 3 questions remaining. Sweat was beginning to flow! Both sides knew their reprimanded Radio presenters for the scores to remain level. The 3rd question would prove pivotal, an educated guess saw Stopes clutch 2 points from nowhere after deliberating long and hard on the composer of a 41st Symphony, eventually the heroes came up with Mozart. The Cricketers’ Norse Mythology question proved to be just as confounding but Stopes crucially scored a lucky guess bonus on the rebound. Both teams answered their final question correctly and Stopes had squeezed home by the narrowest of margins 50 – 47.
A hugely competitive game, well done to both sides. Match of the week and Stopes Tavern team of the week ....Just!
Mar 23th Cup week 4 Final night
Favourites for the cup must be Stopes Tavern the form they have shown during there cup run has been excellent and with a five point start they will be hard to overcome. The Rose Starling never expected to reach this stage with the form shown in the league by there cup opponents but they have battled through gamely to give themselves a chance of the league and cup double but the handicap of five points may be the final stumbling block with Stopes now favourites for a point or two only win.
All teams please note the cup final is at Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook on Monday 30 th March. The Protagonists are: - (handicap in brackets)

Stopes Tavern (8) v Rose Starling (3)
