PHIL'S COMMENTS
|
The penultimate week of the league season has just four matches scheduled again with some exciting matches on paper it turned out that scoring was kept very low as points were difficult to come by on the night it appears. First match report on the night is courtesy of the St. Mary’s Radcliffe OscAr’s John Heenan who was part of the host team with Ramsbottom Cricket Club being the visitors, John reports:- In a keenly fought match St. Mary’s OscAr’s had a clear first round plus added bonus points to have them soaring to the stars but Ramsbottom Cricket club managed to bring them down to earth and knock them for six in round two. After the early excitement a close game followed until the OscArs scored a clear last round to win the match with a score of St. Mary’s A’s 41 Ramsbottom Cricket Club 38 this completes the voting from the St. Mary’s OscArs. Match of the week and team of the week St. Mary’s OscAr’s. The Radcliffe Derby at the Cricket Club where St. Mary’s B’s were visiting on paper was the tie of the week as both teams have been regular top scorers since the start of the season, however this week as sod’s law dictates was the exception to the rule as both teams struggled to take a grip on the match, however the league champions took charge in the second half and took charge to top score on the night but for once not break the fifty mark with final totals of Radcliffe Cricket Club 48 St. Mary’s B’s 35. The third match on the night saw the Phoenix Knights from Heap Bridge Social Club visit the Stopes Tavern Elves and with the Knights having an excellent result last week they were on a high but the Elves are gearing up for a cup campaign and managed to take charge in the last couple of rounds to win with a score of Stopes Tavern 42 Heap Bridge Social Club 34. Final match this week was the visit to the PackHorse Affetside of the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook. Yosemite Sam reports:- Penultimate week of the season saw the Hare and Hounds wander up to Affetside to take on the PackHorse. The Hairy Hounds elected to go first, eventually, that question taking the longest time to answer on the night especially with the balance on recent sets of questions. The Hairy Hounds first question was the only failure amongst both teams in the first round, so the scores finished at PackHorse 8 Hairy Hounds 6. Round two individual’s saw the PackHorse draw a complete blank with the Hairy Hounds picking up a Bonus with Andy Ainsworth’s Hyena, Yosemite Sam however, wasn’t in Arizona so the final round score was 0-7, for totals of 8-13. Round three was a major shock, the Hairy Hounds finally won a third round for a first time in five weeks but only just with a score of just 6-7. Stink round four ended up just two all, giving a half time score of PackHorse 16 Hare and Hounds 22. Round Five saw a fight back by the PackHorse when they took the round with a score of 6-2, with the Hounds having a disaster there deficit had been reduced to just two points. The Two part round six was the complete opposite in terms of scoring yet again as the Packhorse side this time could only muster 2 points whilst the Hairy Hounds scored eight for totals of 24 -32. Round seven individuals saw the Hounds again increase there advantage by scoring on all questions except the folk groups. Packhorse couldn’t recall the scouse crew “the Spinners” and Yosemite went for the sound alike tribute band “the Skinners” to miss out on the bonus (“its not my fault that I prefer Cornish brewers to Scouse folk groups-quotes Yosemite”). Round eight saw a fight back again by the PackHorse as they took a third round on the night by a score of 7-5, so the match finished with totals of PackHorse Affetside 33 Hare and Hounds 43. A low scoring beer leg was just nicked by the Hairy Hounds by a single point. The leagues other sides having a free week were Ramsbottom Rose and Crown, Shoulder of Mutton, SunDial and Rose and Crown Starling. Could all trophy Holders please return them to the Rose and Crown Starling please ready for re-engraving etc. The two Ramsbottom Teams that are yet to pay there subs for the year could they please provide payment to Margaret Chamberlain Rose Rammy at the earliest opportunity please. A new league Secretary, web author and Bury Times reporter will be required next season could all interested parties put there name forward please. Week 24 21-03-2011 The final week of the league season sees most of the honours sown up and just pride to play for however some of these clashes could see some top scores and cup form may become evident. First match is a Ramsbottom derby with Rose and Crown hosting the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe village, both teams may have benefited from a weeks rest however the Shoulder were in a rich vein of form and the young pretenders may just overcome the old tigers. The second match has the league champions Radcliffe Cricket Club visiting the runners up Rose and Crown Starling with the Rose having a week off this may have helped them but the form guide says the Cricketers will win by a hatful. A second Ramsbottom derby this week has the Ramsbottom Cricket Club hosting the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook and with both teams having opposing fortunes last week it is the visiting Hairy Hounds that will emerge as victors in this clash. Heap Bridge Social Club host SunDial Walmersley Rd this clash could be tie of the week and if Helens Harem have rested well then they may have just enough to out joust the Knights this week. The Radcliffe Derby this week is at St. Mary’s Radcliffe with the OscAr’s hosting the B’s both teams had differing fortunes last week and if the B’s are on form the A’s may struggle but this will be close at the end and the B’s may just be on the wrong side of the scoreline….. Final match of the week is the Stopes Tavern Elves hosting the Packhorse with teams relaxing prior to a cup campaign this one may be close but the Elves may just take this one. With the Cup draw now published early favourites are Shoulder of Mutton, with St. Mary’s A and Rose Rammy close behind. Followed by SunDial, Rammy Cricket Club, PackHorse, Heap Bridge, Stopes Tavern, St. Mary’s B, and Hare and Hounds. Radcliffe Cricket Club comes next and the complete outsiders are Rose and Crown Starling. |
