SECRETARY'S COMMENTS
|
So here we are, last match of the season, The Knockout Cup Final, played this year between The Rose Starling and The Dungeon B. The Dungeon won the toss and elected to go first, The Rose had a Handicap Deficit of 13 points to overcome if they were to win the cup this year.
They started off well, winning the opening round 7-5 (overall score 7-18). Round 2 individual topics were Eurovision Song Contest, The Highway Code, Italian Airports and Sitcom Actresses (not as I announced Sitcom Addresses) it must be my age!! The Rose pulled another point back by winning the round 5-4. Overall score 22-12 to the Dungeon. Round 3 was a bit of a mixed bag with points dropped and bonuses not picked up, round score 5-3 to the Rose and another 2 off the deficit overall 25-17 to the Dungeon. Round 4 Stick or Twist was a chance to score a few points but ended 1-0 to the Dungeon. Halfway point of the quiz with the score 26-17 to the Dungeon. Time to replenish glasses with one of the many fine ales available at the Hare and Hounds So to the second half, with the Rose now 9 points behind and slowly chipping away at the handicap, let battle re-commence. The Rose won round 5 by 7-5 to bring the deficit down again to 7 (24-31). Round 6 two part questions is often a match winner and I thought the Rose were going to score heavily when they started off with a 4 on their first question, but they had to play safe on their other three for a total of 10 points. Meanwhile the Dungeon scored steadily for a total of 8, round score 10-8 overall score 39-34. Round 7 Individuals went 6-2 to the Rose for an overall score of 41-40. The Dungeon went in to round 8 with a 1 point lead, would their nerve hold out or would the Rose overcome? It was nip and tuck with one question each left, the Rose hit theirs, could the Dungeon? Of course they did and ran out winners by 46-45!! Winners of a magnificent final. We all enjoyed a great supper provided by our hosts and I would like to express my thanks to the staff at the Hare & Hounds and also to Ian Openshaw and his team mates for all their help. The Presentation Night will be held on Monday April 27th at St Marys Social Club. I ask you all to attend if possible and please bring a Raffle Prize, a bottle of some sort would be ideal. All the funds raised go to running the league and a small number of people work hard to make the league possible. On the night there will be a 60 question Quiz so please arrive early so that we can start at 8:30 prompt |
