PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week24
The Handicap Cup final night and presentation at Heap Bridge Social Club has been reached and an exciting night ensued. The final was played between Rose and Crown Starling and Heap Bridge Social Club.

Playing at their home base, the Heap Bridge Phoenix Nights team started the evening by winning the toss for starting order and elected to go first. A slight hiccup occurred when it was discovered that the Final Questions were missing but this was rectified by Helen Goldsbrough's quick trip home for an unused spare sealed set from 2005. With an eleven point handicap start and with Neville Chadwick in the side the Phoenix nights team were going to be formidable opponents for the surprising finalists and League Champions.

The first round saw the Rose drop the first question ominously but then eventually pull back two of the handicap lead. In the individual round two, the Phoenix lads had a disaster and scored only one while the Rose picked up five points although captain Phil almost got his coat and went home when missing the e-bay answer although he is a member.

Round three saw further points pulled back by the Rose side and with an even fourth round, the half time score with the handicap, was 22-25 advantage for Heap Bridge.

Round five saw a full house scored on both sides. Round six two-part questions saw the Rose play safe for two points on Superman, but the playing Knights suddenly took charge with two good four-point answers by captain Steve Henry and Neville. The Rose team fought back with four pointers from Phil and the Legend Wally Warrington, who confessed recently to learning the periodic table. This led to a bonus point on the last question of the round with the Bromine answer in favour of the Rose team.

So with six rounds completed the scores were now level on the handicap. Round seven individual saw a collapse by the Heap Bridge former Water Rats when they scored only two. This gave the Rose team a chance to grab the lead and to go ahead by a crucial five points.

The Final round saw a full house for the League champions to take the Handicap Cup and score the double of League and Cup honours. Final score Rose and Crown Starling 59 - Heap Bridge S.C. 40, (with the handicap added 59-51).

The honours and mementos were presented to the winners and runners-up, along with the league trophies, by our sponsors' Managing Director - Mr. Roger Bolt of Bury Reprographics Limited.

Teams on the night: HBSC - Neville Chadwick, Robin Glenn, Len Fisher, and Steve Henry. Rose - Kieran Goldsbrough, Lee Sawbridge, Wally Warrington and Phil Musgrove. Question-master and scorers were Helen Goldsbrough and Jayne Woodward.

Thanks to Heap Bridge Social Club for hosting the final and providing the delicious fayre of hotpot. The giant fun quiz was also won by the Rose Starling team and the raffle prizes distributed among the attendant supporting league sides. It is hoped to compose a league summary next week for printing.
