PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week 24 April 28th Now that the warm spring sunshine has at last arrived, the Bury and District Quiz league sponsored by BURY REPROGRAPHICS LTD completes its season with the handicap cup final and presentation night held at Heap Bridge Social Club. With the final contested between Packhorse Affetside and Swan and Railway Radcliffe B’s the final was potentially a very close affair with the Swan’s having just a point start advantage on the handicap. The Packhorse side on the night of Mike and Sue Pinder, James Perkin, and Simon Waddington had fought well to get to the final but the Swan side have ended there season in top form and had scored heavily in all the previous cup rounds. With the Swans winning the toss for choice of questions Round one was a relative low scoring affair with both sides starting slowly and scoring three points each, it seemed the nerves were getting to both teams but both sides scored well in the first individual round but a lapse on the final question by the Packhorse saw the Swans pickup a bonus to extend there lead to four points. Round three had the Swans further extending their lead when the Packhorse had some tough choices over answers and the stick or twist round didn’t favour them either so with a half time score of 13-23 Sue and the Packhorse lads were looking a little concerned. Round five saw both teams score well but the Swans still gained another point. Round Six, the four or two round, can be a turning point but the excellent Swan side pressed home there form advantage by stretching there lead again with the rounds running out, the Packhorse side knew the writing was on the wall and leaked further points in the final two rounds to give a final score on the night of 31-51 and so the cup was won by the superb and high scoring Swan and Railway b’s side of Harry Wilkinson, Gordon Hubert, John Hill and Alan Clayton congratulations to you all. The evening continued with an excellent supper and an entertaining One Hundred Question general quiz that saw the Rose and Crown Starling take the plunder on a tie break with the champion Cricket club. The presentation of the quiz league prizes was made by the managing director of league sponsors Bury Reprographics Ltd, Mr Roger Bolt who presented the League trophy to the captain of worthy champions Radcliffe Cricket Club, Phil Dodd, the runners up shield was presented to Kieran Goldsbrough of Rose and Crown Starling. The Handicap cup was presented to the winning captain Harry Wilkinson. Final event of the evening was the prize draw with a top prize of a digital camera donated by our sponsors, Roger made the draw and it was won by Lee Sawbridge of the Rose Starling with the other prizes spread around the teams even the league secretary won a vottle of bodka, hic. Many thanks go to Stewardess Debbie, staff and the committee of Heap Bridge Social club for hosting the final event. All participating league teams and there host venues and hardworking staff to many to mention, who all contributed to an excellent very competitive and successful season many thanks to all of you. Special thanks go to the league treasurer Jayne Woodward , John Heenan who sorted and organised the question delivery and our Web site organiser and host Alec Fontaine. Grateful thanks to 21rst Century Quiz Ltd who supply the excellent questions and format especially Ray Oakes. The Bury Times were thanked for there continued support and RHS Promotions of Bury who supplied the individual trophies and engraving services. Next Season With the season now completed thought have already started for next season starting in September. Our sponsors Bury Reprographics Ltd courtesy of Mr Roger Bolt have volunteered to continue their excellent sponsorship of the league for a further two years. We are looking for just a couple of extra teams to participate in the league and increase competition, so if your interested in testing and increasing your knowledge, warming your noodle over the long winter months, as well as escaping the repeats on television and visiting welcoming local hostelry’s contact the league secretary or treasurer or pop down to a host venue and make yourself known to the team contacts published on the web site www.buryquizleague.co.uk
