PHIL'S COMMENTS

With the weather has turned back to winter it appears and this weeks quiz was one of the most difficultly frustrating set of questions ever posed, the captains have reported, backed up by low overall scores (without handicaps added).
Match 1 Rammy Cricket Club hosted Swan and Railway B, and the game that turned out to be as close as predicted with both teams going toe to toe until the second individual round when the Swan and Railway took hold of the match and the Swans do not let go once they are in front they hauled the four point handicap back and took a six point lead to run out winners and top score on the night, running out 40-46 winners the Ram- raiders charge through to the semi-s. Match of the week.
Match 2 Cup final hosts The Hare And Hounds Holcombe Brook hosted Swan and Railway A’s Yosemite Sam posted his review:
Another soggy Monday as the Swan a paddled into the Hare and Hounds. According to the envelope the Swans had a handicap of +14 and the Hairy Hounds had a handicap of +10. However a certain roving reporter said the Hounds should only be +7, so after a first round draw, score of two points each, the Swan A who had elected to go first had a lead of 2-9.
With Penelope Pitstop and Dick Dastardly on foreign shores, Mini Mouse had stepped in to ask the questions.
The next two rounds went the way of the Hairy Hounds five points-nil and six points –nil, courtesy of Dave Wright firing on all cylinders and Peter Maguire’s love of ZULU. Dave Wright came up with Montezuma whilst John Cannon spent the night suffering from the Mexican emperor’s revenge. Stink or twist round was two point to one to the Hairy Hounds giving them a half time lead of 15-10.
Round 5 and 6 went 5-0 and 7-3 respectively to the Hounds. Swan A were suffering but not as much as JC who was struggling to hold it together all night. Swan A took the second individual round 2-6 to give them a glimmer of hope to pull the match back there way but the Hounds won round Eight 4-3 to give them an overall score and victory at 33-22. The Hairy Hounds Hoodies swagger through to the Semi Finals.
Chicken licken who’d transformed into Mr Jinx during the season finally broke his duck with help from Pixie and Yosemite Sam, his body language was more Korky the Cat.
Match 3 Was the battle of the Roses with the Cup Favourites Rose and Crown Ramsbottom hosting Rose and Crown Starling, before the match Peter Taylor tried some kidology by saying there form was terrible, but his tigers have been playing for the cup all the latter two thirds of the season. The nine point start those tormenting Taylor’s tigers had, meant the Suffragettes of the Rose Starling had to climb a slippery slope from the start, even after parking; Rose Starling made the first mistake by electing to go stay traditional and go first.
Question one saw the visitors fall further behind by missing the Observer, and then there eyes watered with the scale for chillies to drop the second as well, then also missed John le Mes for no flour grade on the third, picked up again by the burglars and a completely disastrous start for the visitors, The Rose Rammy burglars of Peter Taylor, Margaret Chamberlain, Martin Baggoley and Sue Booth dropped three questions on Banks Brewery, Josephine and Anchors but the Rose starling could see the writing on the wall already when none of these could be picked up 5-2on the round for a 14-2match score. Round two individual round saw both teams score highly with just two points on Zulu’s, dropping British milers, euro prime ministers and Iconic structures and no bonus points to either side, 16-4 match score. Round three had Starling drop the French Lieutenants Woman and carrack, Rose Rammy dropped Kate Hardcastle and Tamberlay for a score of four each 20-8. The Stink or twist round theme Jack Queen King Ace saw the Rose Starling pick up four points missing out on the West Brom answer (baggies fan Lee was on shift), the Rose Rammy could not get the Gloucestershire home of Jack Russell and stuck on two, so two points back for Starling was this the start of a comeback, a dose of fresh air and a refill was required at least.
Round five started of well for Rose Starling when they got the first two and Rammy failed on the cachalot, Sperm whale and biathlon distance but tellingly Starling missed the bonus points. The Rose starling then fell flat on their faces when they missed the pentathlon swimming distance 200m, and wolf fish Bass luckily also not picked up for four points each 26-16. Round six two part questions saw the first parts being too obscure to gamble on although the Rose Starling had Elgar. Both teams dropped the really obscure orchestra questions which wasn’t picked up by either side.Round score six each. Round seven individual rounds saw both sides struggling to fill the categories Rose Rammy dropped the US Currencies 2bits, British Railways West Somerset Line and TV Mogul Mark Thompson, picking up only the Galveston Texan Hit via Peter Taylor. The Rose missed 10 dollars and Malpaso which were picked up by Sue Booth and Peter for bonuses, level round- four each again and time had almost run out for the cup holders Rose Starling total scores 36-26. Round eight saw both teams score on the first question but a glimmer of hope when rammy missed Wideawake on Ascension Island but someone else couldn’t recall the damn name from his military days to grab the bonus for the Rose, who then missed the Gordon setter to allow the cup to finally slip from there grasp, Rammy missed the Veimara which was picked up for a bonus, the last question was dropped by the Rose and picked up for a bonus but the other questions went with the teams for a round score of 5-5 and a match score of 42-31 which without the handicap would have meant the Rose Rammy would have won by two points anyway, well played by Rose Rammy on a frustrating night, both teams struggling with the questions hence the low round scores. Team of the week Rose Rammy Burglars who remain joint cup favourites, and smash and grab there way into the semi finals.
Match 4 was the final game of the round between PackHorse Affetside and the SunDial Walmersly Rd, this week the PackHorse Highwaymen had to give seven points to Barney and the Harem this proved to be un-necessary as the Harem on the most frustrating of nights question wise, managed to win the match without the handicap with a score of 21-30. The Harem sand dance into the semi- finals and become joint cup favourites.

Presentation night Quiz and Raffle is at Heap Bridge Social club on Monday 26th April, suggestion for prizes are welcome.

Week 25 HANDICAP CUP SEMI- FINALS MONDAY 12TH APRIL
Swan and Railway B (+6) v SunDial, Walmersly Rd (+17)
Swan b were top scorers in the quarter finals which shows they are on top form but is that form good enough to overcome the eleven point start Barney and the Harem have managed to steal. There score in the last round saw them win without the handicap also. This one could be very close indeed, that handicap might just be the telling factor for a win for Barney and the Harem…….BUT ONLY JUST.
Rose and Crown Ramsbottom (+13) v Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook (+7)
The Rose Rammy played well to beat the Rose Starling in the match as well as with the bandit handicap However if my calculations are right with the same set of questions the actual scores would have been level between these two semi final teams on the night without the handicaps. So the Hairy Hounds have to be on top form to pull back the six point start they must cede to Taylor’s tigers even though the prospect of a “home” final will spur them on. This will also be close but I think the Hairy Hounds may just and it may take the tie break, get the win.
The anti post current form guide for cup winners is as follows:
Rose Rammy burglars are now joint favourites with SunDial Harem; joint second favourites are now Hairy Hounds hoodies, and the Swan B Ram raiders, the Rank outsiders are still current Cup Holders Rose Starling Suffragettes who were knocked out.
