PHIL'S COMMENTS

The final week of the league season had all teams in action ready for the Handicap cup which has a slight change in scoring format, teams with handicaps start at a minus score so for example Rose and Crown Starling will start at minus 5 against Stopes Tavern who will start at zero, this has been suggested as a much fairer handicap by independent observer and matches will remain competitive until the end of the match in theory and give a much clearer score on the night.
Apologies for late posting of last weeks report it has been inserted and the scores posted now.
Final games of the season proved to be very competitive, and at least two sides made a mockery of there handicap on the night.
First match report and match of the week is the top of the table clash between this years league Champions Radcliffe Cricket Club who were visiting the noisy runners up venue, Rose and Crown Starling who also were staging a psychic evening (no it wasn’t foreseen). The visiting Phil Dodd’s Cricketers decided to bat first and with confidence started well as did the hosts, both sides answering the first two questions but both sides then dropped the third question with the Cricketers being bowled a googly on James Earl Ray which was snapped up in the slips by the hosts but then the hosts went to the boundary, when someone else was talked out of Herschel for a wrong Halley by his team, picked up by the Cricketers for byes, the Cricketers lost there second wicket in the round on there final question when Gandalph the vulture pinched the ball from both sides. A final Sherlock for the hosts saw the score of 7-5 posted. Round two individuals saw the Cricketers again lose out on Latin Motto’s, with the Olympic Citius, Altius, Fortius snapped up by the ever svelte Kieran for a bonus. This was the only missed score of the round for a 9-6 score and totals of 16-11. Round three saw the hosts drop the Oscar Wilde admired Sunflower, a catch missed by the Cricketers also, who then gave a missed chance to the hosts with the reciprocal Dutch Tulip(o) mania. All other questions in the round were scored for an overall total of 22-17. Round four the stink round with a western theme saw the Cricketers of Phil Dodd, Tony Kaye, Mark Dobson and Ken Jones, get caught in the slips at High Noon when the answered Frankie Laine turned out to be Tex Ritter to zero the round, the hosts then raced to the trees with Clint Eastwood and stuck there, when the rain came with J.T. Edson for four points. Halftime totals were Rose and Crown 26 Radcliffe Cricket Club 17.
Round Five saw both sides score high with well worked out full houses, for 34-25 overall. Round six the two part questions had both teams unconvinced and playing safe for two points, except for the final question of the round when neither side could recognise the clue for the element Antimony and a round total of 8-6 was scored, for totals of 42-31. The second individual round seven saw the hosts Kieran slip up with World Wildlife Fund on the first Conservation Emblem question but the Cricketers crucially missed the chance for the bonus also and then they dropped a Verbal insult which was snapped up by Terry for a bonus along with his own two. Question Three on Chickens maybe saw someone else miss his catch of the Chickens of the seas Tuna, missed also for a bonus by the Cricketers and again crucially it worked out later, who scored there with own Montserrat Frog. Final questions on 60’s Oscar Songs, saw Lee score with Sacha Distel’s raindrops and the Cricketers Tony snap up Windmills of your Mind, to post the first winning round for the Cricketers with a score of 5-6, for a total of 47-37 going into the last round. Typically for the hosts just one answer was required and they only just got it when the Cricketers scored all the points in the round except for a third question when crucially Bing Crosby set the hosts on the winning road and they missed there own bonus less Printing answer for a round total of 2-9 and a final score of Rose and Crown 49 Radcliffe Cricket Club 46. The beer leg was narrowly won by the hosts also.
Stopes Tavern had the PackHorse Affetside visiting and in a competitive match the game went all the way down to the final round with both the Elves and Sue Pinder’s PackHorse warming up for the cup with a score of 44-38.
Heap Bridge Social Club hosted the SunDial Walmersley Rd and the Phoenix Knights just manage to dash the hopes of ending the season on a high for Helen’s Harem by grabbing the match in the final round also with totals of 49-44.
The Radcliffe derby at St. Mary’s saw the OscAr’s hosting the B’s and an entertaining night followed but the B’s kept up there terrific second half form to overcome the hosts with a 37-50 scoreline.
First of the two Ramsbottom Derbies on the night took place at the Rose and Crown where Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village made the short trip (and the only team able to say this), down to the hosts. With the Tigers now in full roar for there assault on the cup, they made a mockery of the cup favourite status of the visitors when they ran away with the match to post a 50-32 score and shorten there cup odds. Congratulations on finishing in third place must go to the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom.
Second Ramsbottom derby and final report took place at Ramsbottom Cricket Club who had Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook where the match was a rehearsal for there 2nd round cup fixture. Yosemite Sam reports:-
Final league game of the season saw the Hairy Hounds meander there way to the Ramsbottom Cricket Club. The Great Caruso opted to go first with the Hairy Hounds, which proved to be a definite mistake this week. The Cricket Club scored their first, first round full house of the season and the Hairy Hounds dropped two questions which were not picked up to post a score of 8-4. Second round saw The Great Caruso answer the only bonus point scored in the first half as it turned out, however it didn’t stop the Wicketer’s stretching there lead slightly by taking the round with a 6-5 score for totals of 14-11. The third round has not been the best for the Hairy Hounds in recent times and this was confirmed again this week when neither side scored heavily and the Wicketers posted a 4-2 scored to eek out more of gap. The Stink round saw the Hairy Hounds throw away their chances by falling at High Noon (familiar? see above –Ed). The Cricketers decided to keep quiet in the trees and stuck on two. Half Time Score Ramsbottom Cricket Club 20 Hare and Hounds 13.
Round five saw both teams start the second half off with a full house for eight a-piece. Round Six saw the Hairy Hounds go for this or bust in terms of the match whilst the Cricketers bowled “No Balls” to play safe and consequently they took the round with a 9-2 score. Round seven and eight both saw the same score posted in both and they both also went the way of the Wicketers with 7-5 scores.
The Final scores on the night Ramsbottom Cricket Club 51 Hare and Hounds 31.
Looks like the Wicketers might struggle! when they only have a five point start against the Hairy Hounds in two weeks time (NOT), however the Hairy Hounds did by way of consolation on the night take the beer leg (by the said five points).
With the league fixture now complete can I congratulate ALL Teams in producing one of the most competitive seasons the league has experienced with no, one side being able to relax in any games.
Could all trophy Holders please return them to the Rose and Crown Starling please ready for re-engraving etc.
With the presentation night looming on May 9TH at Heap Bridge Social Club could teams make suggestions for Raffle Prizes etc.
A new league Secretary, web author and Bury Times reporter will be required next season could all interested parties put there name forward please.

Week 25 28-03-2011 Knockout Cup round one
The first week of the knockout cup will see at least four teams season come to an end and looking at the form guide it could be any team.
Match one has Rose and Crown Starling hosting the Stopes Tavern Elves or should it be hob goblins as this match sees the Elves have a five point advantage over the Rose and if they start well the match could run well away from the hosts who would then struggle. The evil Elves will be up for this match and the rank cup outsiders, the Rose will maybe win the match but lose on handicap just!....
Second match has Radcliffe Cricket Club hosting the SunDial Walmersley Rd and Helen’s Mata Hari Harem with a huge fourteen point advantage at the start, the Mata Hari’s may well take full advantage if they continue the form shown last week and not allow the league champions a look in but if the champions pick up bonus’s easily they will pull back the advantage quickly however one of the favourites for cup honours the Mata hari’s can and may well win the match by a short veil….
The third match is Heap Bridge Social Club dark Knights against the PackHorse Hoodies and this is as close as they come with the hosts giving the Hoodies just a two point start. The dark Knights have been back on form in preparation for a cup campaign and may easily overturn that advantage if the Hoodies start nervously possibly match of the week and it will be close but the Knights by just a point maybe…. Perhaps…
Final match this round has the St. Mary’s OscAr’s hosting Rose and Crown Ramsbottom with an Eight point start line advantage over the visiting Ram Raiding Tiger’s the St. Mary’s Sinners could take advantage over the Tigers to build up a more advantageous lead which cannot be pulled back either of these teams could win and the tie break question may well win the match. I am leaning slightly towards the Ram Raiders but that fence to sit on is an awfully nice place with this one and who ever wins could go all the way…..
Just to make things clear the scores at the start of the matches will be:
Rose and Crown Starling -5 Stopes Tavern 0
Radcliffe Cricket Club -14 SunDial 0
Heap Bridge Social Club -2 PackHorse 0
St. Mary’s OscAr’s 0 Rose and Crown Rammy -8
Round Two
Shoulder of Mutton 0 St. Mary’s B’s -6
Hare and Hounds -5 Rammy Cricket Club 0
With the Cup upon us the favourites are Shoulder of Mutton Wolves, with St. Mary’s A Sinners, Rose Ram Raiders Rammy and SunDial Mata Hari’s close behind. Followed by Rammy Cricket Club Rotweillers, PackHorse Hoodies, St. Mary’s Killer B’s , Heap Bridge Dark Knights, Stopes Tavern Evil Elves, and Hare and Hounds Harlots. Radcliffe Cricket Club Muggers comes next and the complete outsiders are Rose and Crown Saints and Angels Starling.
