PHIL'S COMMENTS

The quiz league has moved into round one / quarter finals of the handicap cup phase of the season and excellent contests they proved to be on the night.
Match one was the repeat of last years final between league champions Radcliffe Cricket Club and the Royal Horsemen with the visiting Horsemen having an eleven point handicap advantage at the start, the Horsemen were a point worse off than last years final and started as favourites but the Cricket Club steadily hauled back that advantage however and the match was tense in the final round with the scores ending up a draw at 54-54 but the teams decided on an original way of deciding the tie by playing the beer leg for the win and just as tense as the match it turned out to be close with the Cricket club winning by just one point 20-19. Match of the week. There next match is away to the winners of match two.
Match two was the derby match at Stopes Tavern who played league runners up the Enigma St. Mary’s B’s with the Elves getting a six point advantage at the start, the St. Mary’s B’s looked vulnerable and it proved so, as the Elves took full advantage and stormed away and quote “made light work of the match” scoring there highest total of the season, making a mockery of the carefully crafted handicaps, the Elves are now cup favourites with a final score of 65-50.
Match three saw the Hare and Hounds host joint cup favourites Heap Bridge Social Club
Yosemite Sam reports:-
Second week of the Handicap Cup saw the visit of Heap Bridge Social Club to the Hare and Hounds. The Quiz Room was down to three tables but contained a bar with 28 hand pumps, although none had any beer attached at this point .(beer festival runs from 22 March to 1rst April). Luckily the main bar was still doing a fine job as usual.
Heap Bridge , who had beaten the Hounds by 10 points just two weeks since in a league encounter, elected to go first. The Hairy hounds however snapped up a telescopic bonus to take the first round 7-4, which gave a total after round one of seven all once the handicap of three had been added to the Knights score.
Round two had questions on The Oldest Profession and Exotic Birds, which many thought were the same subject. The mighty Cannon would have been better with Rugby rather than the Oldest Profession giving the answer given but for the Phoenix Knights it was a mere walk down the right street. The Birdman did his job and Annie Succnuson remembered a journey he had done earlier in his life to snatch the points and help the Hairy Hounds take the round 6-5. Round three saw the Hairy Hounds sneak another point in front when they took the round 7-6.
Round four stink round had the Social Knights almost sticking on none , but eventually get to two before the stink question. The Hounds didn’t quarrel over any answers and snatched an eight , their first maximum of the season for this round. The halftime scores were Hare and Hounds 28 Heap Bridge Social Club 20.
Round five started fairly even, both teams swapped bonus points on the third question however the Hounds cleaned up on the fourth to give a round score of 8-5.
Round six two parters had the Phoenix Knights storming back as the baker street boys as they took a maximum with Gerry, whilst the Hairy Hounds played safe with the Mugwumps. However the Knights also grabbed a bonus point, to take the round 6-11 and totals of 42-36.
Round seven saw Captain Arnie appear as a legend on local radio, while the mighty Cannon judged correctly and danced his way to win the points and help take the round with a score of 8-4. Round eight turned out to be a gentle draw at five points apiece, resulting in a final score of Hare and Hounds 55 Heap Bridge Social Club 45.
The Knights had the consolation of taking the beer leg. It should be mentioned that the welsh born Socialite Rochdale fan was far quicker (or more familiar perhaps), with his answers on goats compared to the oldest Profession.
Also a special mention to Captain Arnie, who managed to score three on local radio and will himself be three score on Wednesday. Hounds will be away to the winners of the final match next week and will not have the benefit of forty beers to choose from.
Final match in this round was the clash between the SunDial and Rose and Crown Starling which due to the closure of the Walmersley rd venue took place at the Heap Bridge Social Club and under the auspices of Robin as question master. The SunDial Harem had managed to wrangle an eight point handicap start so the visiting Rose team members looked at previous results and thought a struggle to catch the Harem would be the menu for the night.
The Rose decided to go first, both teams negotiated the first questions but question two had the Rose stumped and the dutch artist renown for illustrating Noddy passed them by in a little red car, however when Bryan Gunn’s team stumped the Harem a bonus Norwich was quickly snapped up. The third question on Swindon was successful for the Rose but the Ladybird books of Peter and Jane flummoxed both sides. The Rose then dropped a “collop” which passed the Harem by as well but the Harem floated John Glenn in for the points, round score 4-5 for totals of 12-5.
Round two had categories of the oldest profession, Exotic Birds, Jukebox Musicals and Sci-Fi Novels. Question one had more arguments amongst the Harem on who was going to take the first category, with Lee taking the category for the Rose and scoring, Eunice taking the question for the Harem, could not hook the answer and it passed by both teams. Question two saw Roses someone else miss the answer of Darwins Finches but grab the Birds of Paradise for a bonus. Both Bob and Tony grabbed question three points with both hands and Kieran grabbed all the points for the Sci-Fi novels. Round score 2-8 for 14-13 totals. Round three saw the Rose take the lead in the match by scoring on all questions but the first on Goat Island. The Harem missed the first on Holy of Holies and the last when the answer was discussed many times but evaded them at the last minute the Rose grabbed the only bonus scored in the round with Flintoff. Round score 4-7.
Round four stink round had a theme of Q, The Rose going first had the same problem as other sides and once question one was safely out of the way went on to score a full house, the Harem got to two points safely but was shot by the Quarrel and stuck on two. Halftime score SunDial 20 Rose and Crown 28.
Round five saw the Rose take all the points on offer for questions one and two, both sides scored on question three and on the fourth the Rose missed the Rugby League answer, and the Harem also missed the pass. Round score 4-8.
Round six two part questions saw the Harem score a maximum on the first with Mamas and Papas and the Rose reciprocated with Gerry Rafferty. Question two in the round saw the Harem drop the Raven for a bonus and the Rose grabbed a safe Magpie, with all other points safely negotiated for two points each the round score was 8-11, and it was noted that the Harem of Anne, Helen, Eunice and Tony looked deflated. Round seven, individual had categories of Local Radio, Television Judges, Pilgrim Sites and 20th Century Quotes, this saw Lee drop the only points of the round when Fatima passed him by the Harem rallied to a full house and a bonus to take the round 6-9 for totals of 53-41.
Round Eight saw the Harem miss the first but the cross bred Sheep-goat was picked up for a bonus by the Rose who dropped there only points of the round when Stanford escaped them, the Harem dropped the final laval university for a round score of 4-7 and final totals of SunDial 45 Rose and Crown 60.
The Beer leg went to the tie break question and the Harem succeeded by a century, Helen has asked me to thank Robin and Heap Bridge Social Club for allowing them to complete the season there, and the league would like to thank Helen and her mum Anne for keeping the SunDial going these past seasons, sadly they will not be able to continue for next season due to other commitments although they may like to continue as part of another side, so unless someone take the team over, the SunDial will sadly not be appearing next season.
The presentation night is looming, so would teams like to submit ideas for the Raffle first prize and would all teams contribute to the raffle prizes to help boost funds please.

Week 25 26-3-12
Week Twenty five is the semi final week of the handicap cup.
Match one has Radcliffe derby between Stopes Tavern new favourites for the cup and Radcliffe Cricket Club with the handicap throwing the Stopes Tavern Elves a ten point advantage on paper this looks an Everest type mountain for the champion Cricketers to climb but they proved last week that they can get there. However with a draw against the champions recently the elves should be strong enough to take full advantage and hold on for a win.
Match two has the Rose and Crown Starling hosting the Hare and Hounds, with the Hare and Hounds having a three point advantage at the start this could prove crucial. The league matches were shared with the away sides winning so on that alone that is another feather in the Hairy Hounds cap. Close match but the Hounds by a point……probably, sadly, regrettably.

Cup favourites now are Stopes Tavern, Hare and Hounds. The Rose and Crown Starling comes next with the league Champions Radcliffe Cricketers the outsiders still.

Handicaps are stated in brackets.
