PHIL'S COMMENTS

Web Week 25 28 Mar 2011
The first week of the cup saw some early favourites surprisingly bow out of the competition on a night that saw some tough but fair questions on both sides and bonuses were hard to come by it appears but did make a difference crucially.
The semi-final has been drawn by our sponsor Roger Bolt and is below.
Please Note the Handicap cup has a slight change in scoring format, teams with handicaps start at a minus score so for example Rose and Crown Starling will start at 0 against Radcliffe Cricket Club who will start at minus 5, this has been suggested as a much fairer handicap by an independent observer and matches will remain competitive until the end of the match in theory and give a much clearer score on the night.
First match on the night was the game at St. Mary’s Radcliffe where the OscAr sinners were hosting the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom Ram Raiders with an eight point deficit the visiting Rose Ram Raiders had to start well and steadily haul back the deficit and with the quiz being very tough on both sides they steadily pulled back the lead and took charge in the second half to win on the night handicap included 31-43 and shorten the cup odds considerably in there favour.
Second match to report in on the night was the SunDial Walmersley Rd who were visiting the League champions Radcliffe Cricket Club and the Sun Dial Mata Hari’s had a huge fourteen point advantage over the visitors at the start, but they had mislaid there lucky pen and also had to employ a stand in player, the Cricketers took full advantage with their normal strong showing and Phil Dodd’s team mugged the Mata Hari’s by a score of 50-42 to significantly shorten there odds for the double.
Third match on the night was the visit of the Stopes Tavern Evil Elves to the Rose and Crown Saints and Angels Starling, with the hosts having to cede five points to the Evil Elves this looked on paper to be a tough task and things weren’t helped when the start was delayed slightly as the questions were misplaced and the staff didn’t know of the match. But the staff rallied round a noisy corner at the opposite end of the pub was cleared on the high chairs and the match started, the Evil Elves had a surprise absentee on the night as team captain Paul Gardner had absconded for a long weekend in London visiting Fortnum and Masons, coffee shops and Banks reports the team members present. The Elves elected to go first on the night and started well by increasing the lead as they snapped up the first question, whilst the hosts tied themselves in knots by missing a bowline. A difficult question two caught out both the Elves and the hosts when Benedict Arnold was missed, the Rose then managed to start with there own question and didn’t drop any further points in the round the Elves missed poking the hosts with an artists maulstick for there own final question and the hosts couldn’t manage a bonus either for a round score of 6-4 and totals of 1-4. Round two individuals with a first category of Musical Instruments saw both teams fail when neither of the clues of the musicians who played the Zither nor Pan Pipes could be recognised. The second question on Historic regions was snapped up by both teams’ geographic experts. Then Terry for the hosts snapped up all the points on David Lean films with the Elves grabbing there sporting twin of George Cooper the Rose couldn’t grab the Rowe twins sport of Table Tennis which went begging on the Passover too, to post a round score of 5-4 and totals of 6-8. The consultation round three saw the Rose score heavily with a full house and bonuses courtesy of Anne who knew her herbs to score both a bonus and the teams own question and Someone else who snapped up the bonus Evesham’s River Avon. Round score 10-4 for a total of 16-12. Round four the Stink round with a theme of Any old Iron, the Elves team of Harry Bullough, Roger Bolt Tim Green and Ian Brealey raced to the four pointer with answers of Ironside and Scunthorpe Utd but the came up against the Iron gates gorge on the Danube and went for Hungary when Serbia was the answer to null the score. The hosts grabbed the answers of Thatcher, Man in the Iron Mask and Severn but couldn’t go with Iron Man’s alter ego of Tony Stark and swiftly stuck on four, then realised what the answer was. Halftime totals were Rose and Crown 20 Stopes Tavern 12.
Round five saw both teams struggle for answers, the Rose scored on the first but missed a bonus Greece when the Elves dropped the Vouli question. Second question on x-factor and I’m an idiot for coming here’s Stacey Solomon was missed by the Rose but the bush tucker was good for the Elves who scored there first bonus on the night but then couldn’t capitalise on it and dropped there own second Leyden Jar which was grabbed by the Rose for a return bonus, the Rose again dropped there third and it was also missed by the Elves this time when Sejm parliament wasn’t recognised as Polish. The Elves then picked up there first own points in the round with Lactation. Both teams missed a controversially worded final first question on the Wheatstone Bridge and the reciprocal x-factor runner up and break your neck for money (Dancing on Ice) winner Ray Quinn (who!). Round score was a mighty three points each. Round six saw the hosts play safe and the Elves making sure until the third question when the hosts couldn’t recognise Swaziland and the Elves picked up a bonus both teams scored safe two’s on the rest of the round for a score of 6-9 and totals of 29-24. Second individual round saw the hosts pick up all the points on Snooker Players (actually there home countries) and with Kieran dropping his 60’s T.V. with Mother being in the Avengers which was snapped up by the Elves for a bonus, Former Colonies scored for both sides then a tricky Birds alternative Names saw both sides miss the points with clues of different names for Shrike and Dabchicks. Round score, five each for totals of 34-29. Both sides knew a good final round would take the match but both sides had a nightmare picking there alternative answers on most questions, only scoring two points each, with Captain America and Oprah Winfrey (apparently not the same person).
To total a final score of Rose and Crown 36 Stopes Tavern 31 and a surprise win for the Saints and Angelelic hosts.
The beer leg which was a short term memory test as it was the same one as asked last week was taken by the Elves and also the bonus point pennies was grabbed by Tim Green when he was spot on with his answer.
Final match this round was held at the Phoenix Nights Heap Bridge Social Club and the Dark Knights had the PackHorse Affetside Hoodies visiting, Sue Pinder and the PackHorse Hoodies started with just a two point advantage and the match started off close but the advantage gave the PackHorse a crumb of confidence and they, in a competitive match, steadily increased it to post a final total and eliminate the Dark Knights from the competition with a 41-49 score.
With the league fixture now complete can I congratulate ALL Teams in producing one of the most competitive seasons the league has experienced with no, one side being able to relax in any games. With the presentation night looming on May 9TH at Heap Bridge Social Club could teams make suggestions for Raffle Prizes etc.
A new league Secretary, web author and Bury Times reporter will be required next season could all interested parties put there name forward please.

Week 26 04-04-2011 Knockout Cup round two
The second round of the cup has FOUR cracking matches in prospect with some teams sporting a real bandit handicap.
Match one has Rose and Crown Ramsbottom Ram Raiders hosting the PackHorse Hoodies, the Pack Horse have a four point advantage at the start and with both sides keen to progress this match will be tight but Sue and her hoodies defended just a two point advantage last week and if they start well they may defend the advantage again but Taylor’s Tigers are trophy hunting and will crash and trash the lead if any slip up’s are made as there final league placing proves. Close match but the Ram Raiders may well win by a point only or the tie break……
Match two has the Shoulder of Mutton Wolves hosting the Killer B’s of St. Mary’s Radcliffe. With the cup favourites in many eyes being the debutant team of Shoulder of Mutton the b’s have there work cut out to haul back the six point start they must give the wolves if they play to second half of the season form, however the B’s have scored heavily and they may haul the deficit back but can they win? The tie break question may well be employed here also but the Wolves may just….. perhaps…. Maybe have enough.
Another difficult match will be the league runners up Rose and Crown Starling who have the Champions visiting again for the second time in three weeks and who have to cede a five point start to there final league match conquerors, however the cup being a one off match, things may be a lot tougher on last weeks scores for the hosts and the Cricket club Muggers will want to haul the lead back quickly will it be enough? The Cricket Club may well be strong enough to grab this one…..just.
Final Match sees the Ramsbottom Cricketers make a quick return visit also, to the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook. The Hairy Hounds Harlots were soundly beaten in there final league match by the Cricket Club Rotwiellers and this one has the Hairy Hound Harlots giving the rotty’s a five point start as well, but the Hare and Hounds maybe a different proposition in this match and any slip up by the Cricketers may prove costly indeed, a close game that the tie break may also come into use but the Hairy Harlots by a point……..mmmm.
Just to make things clear the scores at the start of the matches will be:
Rose and Crown Rammy -4 PackHorse 0
Shoulder of Mutton 0 St. Mary’s B’s -6
Rose and Crown Starling 0 Radcliffe Cricket Club-5
Hare and Hounds -5 Rammy Cricket Club 0

Semi final
Rose and Crown St/ Radcliffe CC V Shoulder/ St Mary’s b’s
H&H/Rammy Cricket Club V Rose and Crown Rammy /PackHorse

With the Cup now in full swing, favourites are still Shoulder of Mutton Wolves, with Rose Ram Raiders Rammy moving close behind. Followed by Rammy Cricket Club Rotweillers, then Radcliffe Cricket Club Muggers comes next with PackHorse Hoodies, St. Mary’s Killer B’s, and Hare and Hounds Harlots and remaining the complete outsiders are Rose and Crown Saints and Angels Starling.
