PHIL'S COMMENTS

The quiz league moved into the handicap cup semi finals this week and both semi finals had decisive results with this years summer the only hot competition.
Match one was the Radcliffe derby between the cup favourites at this stage Stopes Tavern and the League champions Cricket Club as the Elves Paul Gardner reported at the end of the match:- Ouch, ouch, ouch. From Hero to Zero in seven days, totally out played by a rampant Radcliffe Cricket Club as the Elves registered their lowest score of the season, with a ten point handicap start, it all went horribly wrong. Trounced 37-57, well done to Phil and the boys.
Match two saw the Hare and Hounds visit Rose and Crown Starling, with the Hare and Hounds being second favourites for the cup and a three point handicap start.
Yosemite Sam reports:-
Monday night’s semi final saw Rose and Crown Starling host Hare and Hounds. The evening in a nutshell had Rose and Crown answer four bonuses, compared to the Hairy Hounds seven.
Hounds scored double figures in rounds five and seven. Abbottabad and Abbotts ale helped the Hairy Hounds to a 36-50 victory and rewarded them with their first ever cup final appearance (excluding sitting as spectators), which they hope not to do next week.
Someone else reports now on the demise of the Rose:-
The Hairy Hounds elected to go first courtesy of Peter and round one opened with both teams scoring, question two saw the Rose drop the seven years war and question three saw the Hairy Hounds drop the Austrian war of succession both went bonus less, to give a round score of six each and totals of 6-9.
Round two individuals had categories of T.V. sitcom Cafes, Famous Ales, French Boys Names, Sporting Bodies. The Rose Starling and Hairy Hounds both eased through the first questions, the second had the Hounds snapping up the ale but Bob for the Rose missed his when Greene King wasn’t recognised even though most of the glasses on the table had it stamped on them, the bonus point was snapped up with gusto by Yosemite Sam. Question three proved to be a stickler for both teams except a bonus point went to the Hairy Hounds with Guillame. Question four saw the Rose pinch all the points when the Hairy hounds Dave missed FIFA and Lee for the Rose scored. Round score 5-6, totals 11-15. Round three saw the Rose start to claw back the advantage earnt by the Hairy Hounds when they missed Fabian Society first off and the Rose snapped up the bonus, the remainder of the round was scored on by both sides until the final question for the Rose when Territorial Army foxed both teams, round score 7-6. Stink round four had a theme of George and the Dragon, the Hairy Hounds raced to two points but were dammed by the river Demerara next to Georgetown. Sticking on two. The Rose also raced to two but decided to take a risk and plumped for the wrong George when a little more thought would have got the right one, stupid boys, zero scored.
Half time totals Rose and Crown 18 Hare and Hounds 23.
Round five started out promising for the Rose picking up the first after some thought, however ballet is not someone else’s strong point and De Valois went begging picked up by the cultured Hounds for a bonus who scored a full house in the round and added a second bonus when the Rose missed Carinthia’s home country, for a round score of 4-10. Round six two part questions saw the Rose looking for maximums to give them a chance but both the first questions went begging, as Augustus John and Tin was canned by both teams. Question two saw the Rose play safe and then pick up a bonus Nicole Kidman, the only points the Hairy Hounds managed this round was artist Stanley Spencer for a two on question three with Rose scoring only safe two pointers and hitting single bonus points with the final questions, the points gained was small but the score was 8-2 for totals of 30-35.
Second individual round seven had categories of Road Safety, European Languages, Heavyweight Boxing and British Patriotic Songs. A confident Hairy Hounds team scored a full house just when it was needed and they picked up bonus points with Portuguese and Thomas Arne to score another ten point total in the round, 4-10. Round eight saw the Rose requiring a maximum score plus bonus points but as it happens Guy’s and Gals they managed just two points with the first question and didn’t trouble the scorer further dropping space project mercury, internet bank IF, and Soyuz. The Hairy Hounds dropped internet bank Egg and Fifth Column but scored on the bonus Soyez for a round total of 2-5 and a match score of 36-50. Last minute handicap adjustments by the home side wasn’t accepted by the Hounds and congratulations must go to them for deservedly earning there final slot. Good luck for the final.
The Hounds also snapped up the beer leg and someone else managed to get within a hundred or so with the yellow cabs in New York to grab the tie break pennies.
The Grand final is between Hare and Hounds and Radcliffe Cricket Club all teams are welcome to attend and watch the final contest of the season.
The presentation night is looming, so would teams like to submit ideas for the Raffle first prize and would all teams contribute to the raffle prizes to help boost funds please.

Week 26 2-4-12
Week Twenty six is the grand final week of the handicap cup.
This year’s grand final takes place at the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook and has the home team qualifying to play double chasing league champions Radcliffe Cricket Club. With a handicap start of nine points the hosts if they keep the form from last weeks semi final win will be formidable opponents for the Cricket Club but they have swept aside all high handicaps thrown at them already and they will catch any slip ups by the Hounds with open arms. Close match but may be the hosts by a point……….. perhaps.

Handicaps are stated in brackets.
