PHIL'S COMMENTS

The second week Handicap cup draw saw last weeks victors drawn against each other and the remaining four teams fight it out also.
The semi finals drawn by our sponsor Bury Reprographics Roger Bolt are next week and are at home teams venues, followed by the final next week as announced early on in the season this will take place at the St. Mary’s Catholic Club Radcliffe on the 18th April.
First match on the night was the game at Rose and Crown Ramsbottom Ram Raiders who had Packhorse Affetside Hoodies visiting with both teams in good form this was predicted to be close, but the Packhorse Hoodies had manipulated a four point advantage at the start and it proved to be a crucial part of the match as both teams started well. The round that turned the match completely in the winners favour was the two part round , and the hoodies played a stormer gaining maximum points and bonuses to grab a good lead and although the Ram Raiding tigers made significant gains in the final two rounds the PackHorse held on for the win and a 44-51 score. PackHorse Hoodies Team of the week.
Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village was the venue for game two, with the St. Mary’s B’s visiting. The Shoulder of Mutton had a six point handicap advantage at the start and have been rightly tipped by many as cup favourites because of there second half league season form eating up the opponents with wolfish delight, but the St. Mary’s team have been free scoring too and stinging there opponents in the league so this match was predicted to be close. Both teams started well but the Shoulder Wolves handicap advantage gave them a lot of confidence and throughout the match it proved crucial against the killer B’s and although the B’s fought hard there sting had been drawn the cup favourites took the match by a point in actual straight scores and by seven with there handicap to progress to the semi’s with a 50-43 score.
Third match took place at the Rose and Crown Starling with the visitors being the Radcliffe Cricket Club with both teams being first and second in the league and the hosts beating the champion Cricketers in the final match of the league season, the match on Paper looked to be to the home teams advantage, however the prior commitments within the host squad saw them with just three players after last weeks match and thanks to Rachael Goldsbrough babysitting on the night, the hosts made a team, with Helen as Question Master it turned out right on the night at the start of proceedings. The Cricket Club Muggers started with a criminal advantage of minus 5 on the night and chose to go first. Both teams started well and reached the final questions of the round without dropping points however the medical Jobe’s relocation test proved impossible to manipulate for both sides as ankles and hips were nowhere near the correct shoulder. The final question for the Rose Saints and Angels saw them answer Sunday Times Crossword for the puzzle when the answer of Times Crossword was the correct one , a bonus answer picked up immediately by the Muggers to give a round score of 6-7 and totals of 6-2. Round two individual had the hosts struggling for fully confident categories and the Cricket club scored a full house and two bonus points when International Rugby Nicknames of Lebanon and the West Indian Curacao drink were missed by the Rose, for a round total of 4-10 and totals of 10-12. Round three proved a little controversial with one question but both sides started the round with good answers however the Cricket Club missed the second on Bay Thirteen of the M.C.G. which the Rose snapped up for a bonus. The final question of the round for the Cricketers was the talking point as the wording appeared slightly wrong and both teams knew the author of the 63 cycle A Shropshire Lad poems (and Shropshire Lad was the answer to the Third Question for the Rose) was A.E Housman but the question confused them both by asking Which poet’s recording of his poem “A Shropshire Lad” was released as a single and ……., however the answer on the sheet was (Sir) John Betjemin which both teams thought the question wrong, however further research proves the question and answer to be correct, as JB had his own “Shropshire lad” poem. Andy Capp rounded off a full house and the bonus for the hosts to post a round score of 9-4 and a total of 19-16. Round Four Stink or twist with a theme of “The Car is the Star” saw the Cricketers team of Phil Dodd, Mark Dobson, Ken Jones and Tony Kaye race to a full house of eight and the Rose blew there own excellent full house chance when someone else crucially answered Danger Man promptly instead of The Prisoner slowly, his real resignation and retirement letter has been posted to the league Secretary also promptly. Round score 0-8 for halftime totals of Rose and Crown 19 Radcliffe Cricket Club 24.
Round five saw both sides start well but the Cricketers missed the Elephanta Island near Mumbai and the hosts Lee, Jayne, Bob and Someone else couldn’t pick that bonus, the final home question had the hosts stumped on there’s and the muggers side were also stifled, as Germany’s Young player of the World cup could not be recognised as Thomas Muller for round scores of 6-6. The round six stick or twist round saw both teams play for two points on the first, the Rose Saints and Angels then scored a maximum on the next two questions and Cricketers scored a maximum on there own second question, then the Cricketers dropped their third own O.T question and Joshua could not be picked up by the Rose either, both teams went for two pointers on the final question for round scores of 12-8 and totals of 37-38. Round seven, the second individual round had categories of British Queens, Top of the pops, Roadsign Geometry and Premier League Boardrooms both sides picked well, however the only dropped answer fell to the Cricketers when the stop sign wasn’t recognised as Octagonal and Saint Bob snapped up the bonus for the Rose. Round score 9-6 for totals of 46-44. Final round eight saw the host Saints and Angels start with a nightmare as both the truce village between North and South Korea on Panmunjon slipped away with a bonus and the Maori, All Black tour farewell song of “Now is the hour” slipped away too, thankfully bonus less this time. With there own first two question answered the Cricketers had a mugged three point advantage, the Rose grabbed there third answer and a chink of light appeared when the Cricketers dropped there own question about a fish named “Poor John”with the Rose only knowing a fish called Wanda the bonus was missed sadly for the Rose. The final question saw the Rose identify the Almanac’s Authors clue correctly and it was down to a the final question to decide the outcome of the match and the Cricketers completed the mugging by recognising, after some deliberation, the Cecillienhof Palace as being in Potsdam so a round total of 4-7 gave final scores of Rose and Crown 50 Radcliffe Cricket Club 51, Match of the week and a difficult beer leg saw the visiting muggers take the honours with Saint Lee scoring on the tie break pennies. With the season now over for the Rose and Crown I would like to thank all the team and especially Amanda and the staff for there efforts this season.
Final Match this round saw the visit of Ramsbottom Cricket Club Rotweillers to the Hare and Hounds Harlots Holcombe Brook. Yosemite Sam reports:-
Quarter Finals night saw the first forays into the Handicap Cup this season for both the Hare and Hounds and Ramsbottom Cricket Club, the Hairy Hounds had to cede a five point start to the visiting Rotwiellers.
Round One saw the Hairy Hounds slip further behind when the Cricket Club Rotty’s took the round 4-9 and increased there lead to Ten Points.
Round two individuals saw the Hairy Hounds claw back the points lost in the first round when the score was reversed 9-4 and the lead was again just the 5 point handicap!
Round Three went the way of the Hairy Hounds with a score of 8-4 to pull back most of the Handicap but the round Four Stink round saw another reversal in the score line to recover the handicap for the Rotweillers. Half time totals Hare and Hounds 20 Ramsbottom Cricket Club 25.
Round five saw the wicket Rotweillers answer all but two of the questions and increase there advantage again with a score of 2-9 for totals of 22-34. Round six two parters saw both teams play safe and gain second part full houses at eight apiece. Round seven saw the Hairy Hounds claw back some of the advantage gained by the Rotweillers by taking the round 8-6 for a total going into the final round of 38-48. A final round flurry by the Hairy Hounds fell just short and couldn’t seriously affect the outcome when they posted a score of 7-4 in the round for a final total of Hare and Hounds 45 Ramsbottom Cricket Club 52. So the Hairy Hounds had there usual early cup exit despite complete and brilliant guesses of Desperate Dan and John Betjemin when they had calculated exactly the same first answers as the Wicket Rotty’s. The beer leg again was taken by the Hairy Hounds.
So for the Hairy Hounds it is goodnight to another season, leaving only the one unanswered question of where is the cup final being held?
With the presentation night looming on May 9TH at Heap Bridge Social Club could teams make suggestions for Raffle Prizes etc.
A new league Secretary, web author and Bury Times reporter will be required next season could all interested parties put there name forward please.

Week 27 11-04-2011 Knockout Cup Semi finals
The semi finals of the Handicap cup has two good matches in prospect with teams sporting a real bandit handicap.
The first semi final has the League champions Radcliffe Cricket Club hosting the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village and the visiting Shoulder of Mutton Wolves are firm cup favourites having gained a handicap advantage of eleven points over the Cricket club Muggers. Looking at last weeks scores alone has the match going the visitors way by four points but the muggers are looking at the double of league and cup will they have enough …the prediction is not quite the Wolves by a point ….. maybe.
Second Semi-final is a much closer affair handicap wise with the host Rammy Cricket Club handing just a one point advantage to the visiting PackHorse Affetside. Both sides are in a run of good form but the PackHorse Hoodies are steaming at the moment and the advantage at the start may well seem a mountain to climb for the home Rotweillers as the lead could be increased quickly but if the Hoodies slip up the Rotweillers will bite hard and lock the game up themselves. Very difficult to see an outright winner and a draw is not far off so the tie break is one to revise (i.e. how many matchsticks would it take to cover the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and Lundy), if the fence had sharp spikes the feet would fall just on the Hoodies side…….
Just to make things clear the scores at the start of the matches will be:

Semi final
Radcliffe Cricket Club -11 V Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village 0
Ramsbottom Cricket Club-1 V PackHorse Affetside 0
Final
The final is to be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Club Radcliffe, normal match rules except handicap applies and a coin is tossed for the choice of starting questions and 8-30pm prompt start. All are welcome to attend. Food has been catered.
Presentation Night

Can all teams provide raffle prizes please. Any profit gained from the night goes back into league funds.

With the Cup now in at semi final stages, Strong favourites are Shoulder of Mutton Wolves, with PackHorse Hoodies second favourites closely followed by Rammy Cricket Club Rotweillers, and the outsiders are Radcliffe Cricket Club Muggers.
