PHIL'S COMMENTS

This year’s quiz season was brought to an end at the presentation night held at the Heap Bridge Social club courtesy of Robin Glenn and the committee and the super stewardess Debbie.
With the spring heat wave continuing, the teams gathered for a competitive quiz, raffle and the presentation of prizes by league sponsor Bury Reprographics Ltd in the form of Managing Director Roger Bolt.
The night’s festivities stated with the general knowledge quiz read by the league secretary, with the questions supplied by 21rst Century Quiz Ltd.
We completed the first half of the quiz and took refreshments, fresh air for the health conscious and Alec Fontaine took pictures of the proceedings which can be observed below, second half of the quiz went along as eventful as the first, with teams concentrating hard although a little concern was voiced when the question master required the full name and middle initial of a certain sewing machine manufacturer.
With the quiz completed, the delicious supper was supplied by Lee Glenn, the favourite part of the proceedings for many teams at this time of the year.
The winners of the quiz on the night was the cup winning team of Swan and Railway b who ram raided the kitty and won the sum of £18, Alan Clayton quickly collected the spoils, second prize of £10 went to the Rose and Crown Suffragettes, the only thing they have won all year. Third prize of six pounds went to the Hairy Hounds.
The presentation of the trophies went ahead and Phil Dodd captain of worthy league winners Radcliffe Cricket Club received the league trophy from Roger Bolt, all the Radcliffe Cricket team of Tony Kaye, Mark Dobson ,Ken Jones, Colin Morgan and also Phil Dodd were presented with commemorative plates. Paul Gardner Skipper and head elf of Stopes Tavern received the runners up shield from his team-mate Roger, who then presented the Handicap cup to the captain of the winning Swan and Railway B’s team Alec Fontaine along with their commerative plates to the squad of Alan Clayton, John Hill, Gordon Hubert, Harry Wilkinson and Enid Cathcart who’s plate was received along with his own by Alec Fontaine as Enid could not be there on the night. The losing Cup finalist’s Rose and Crown Ramsbottom will all receive medals when they return from there world wide travels.
The evening continued with the Raffle, with a top prize of an I-POD Shuffle kindly provided by Bury Reprographics Ltd won, after Roger drew the first ticket, by Ann Thompson of Rose and Crown Starling, who also later won the signed copy of his latest book kindly donated by the author Martin Baggoley of Rose and Crown Rammy before he flew off to Oz. The many prizes contributed by the teams went to every table but special mention must be made of the legend Wally Warrington who invests a lot in the raffle and won his reward on the night this year again. With the Raffle completed that saw this season of the Quiz league finally completed, may I take this opportunity to thank all teams, this year for making it the most competitive season I have took part in, congratulations go to Ramsbottom Cricket club on a successful debut season for a new team un-familiar with the format and question standard and a special thanks to all the venues host landlords and landladies, stewards, stewardesses and there marvelous staff.
I must single out Yosemite Sam of the Hairy Hounds for his super contributions to the match reports; I look forward to next seasons articles.
. Special thanks also go to the league treasurer Margaret Chamberlain, John Heenan who sorted and organised the question delivery and our Web site Wonder, organiser and host Alec Fontaine. Grateful thanks to 21rst Century Quiz Ltd who continue to supply the excellent questions and format, especially Ray Oakes. Thanks also go to RHS Promotions of Bury who supplied the individual trophies and engraving services.
The PackHorse Affetside has volunteered to write the Christmas quiz this year but they are looking for a venue as the PackHorse is rather a busy venue around the Christmas period please contact Mike or Sue or via myself if any venue wishes to come forward has to cater for around 30/40 people.
With the season now completed thoughts have already started for next season starting in September. Our league Sponsors Bury Reprographics Ltd has also suggested that we may have an extra league prize next season of a wooden spoon for the bottom team.
We are looking to recruit an extra team to participate in the league and increase competition, so if your interested in testing and increasing your knowledge, drinking welcoming ale in pleasant cosy and warm hostelries over the long winter months, then contact the league secretary or treasurer or pop down to a host venue and make yourself known to the team contacts published on the web site www.buryquizleague.co.uk
August 2010 is when the next get together is to discuss the next season
