PHIL'S COMMENTS

The semi final week of the Handicap Knockout cup had two exciting contests which produced at least one surprising result. The final next week as announced early on in the season will take place at the St. Mary’s Catholic Club Radcliffe. First Semi final took place at the Ramsbottom Cricket Club who had the PackHorse Affetside visiting and the hosts were conceding just a one point start to the visitors on the handicap but on a night where points were difficult to score the PackHorse Hoodies took hold of the match in the second half and didn’t look back. The PackHorse has had an indifferent league season but they have tamed the Rottwiellers and grabbed there place in the final with a low final overall score of Ramsbottom Cricket Club 26 PackHorse Affetside 37. The Second semi final took place at the Radcliffe Cricket Club who had the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village visiting and the match took place in the lower main room of the club for the first time in a couple of seasons, due to a darts and dominoes match along with a rounders meeting upstairs and even the main room had another function taking place but the Shoulder of Mutton Wolves arrived sporting an eleven point advantage on the handicap and were rightly going into the match due to there second half of the league season form and an excellent win last week as hot cup favourites. The match commenced with Tony Kaye as this weeks question master and the visiting Wolves chose to go first. The first question on who played the 1964 King Henry II in “Beckett” was missed as the Wolves answered Richard Harris and the Cricket club Muggers snapped up a bonus O’Toole to pull back the first handicap point. The Muggers took there own first question on the first WWII Conference in 1943 venue with Tehran confidently. The Wolves then dropped there second question also when luckily at this point for them neither side could recognise the on-line apple I-pod application for Rupert Murdoch’s new newspaper venture as “The Daily”. The Cricketers picked up a simple Laker’s “Skytrain” for there own second question and the handicap was disappearing fast! The Shoulder Wolves snapped up there first points of the match on the third question though when “Yalta” made a return visit to the quiz format and the Cricket Club muggers kept up a hundred percent record for the round with “ A Lion in Winter” , final question in the round had the Wolves dropping points again when Seattle was answered for the North American City which has a mainly elevated rapid transit system named Skytrain, whilst the Cricketers picked up a bonus with the nearby city of Vancouver. Round one was completed with the “I” newspaper and a full house for the Cricketers and a round score of 10 -2 for an overall score of minus1-2, that very favourable advantage with the handicap had almost gone in the first round. Round two individual round had categories of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, FIFA Awards, TV Sitcoms and Middle Eastern Food. Both sides were a little apprehensive about who chose what however the only questions and bonuses missed by both sides were the FIFA Awards as the only South American Footballer to win the World Footballer of the Year 3 times and the only European Footballer to also win World Footballer of the Year 3 times were not recognised by either Phil Dodd or Ste Greenhalgh, who were they…. recently retired Ronaldo and Zidane respectively. Round score six a-piece for totals of 5-8. Round three has been problematic for quite a few sides this season as it has provided difficult questions throughout and this night was no different the first question was the birthplace museum of Gustav Holst city location the Wolves incorrectly thought Leeds whilst the Cricket Muggers grabbed a bonus Cheltenham. But the hosts then missed the informal / Historical name of the disease that was thought to be curable by the monarchs touch with an answer of King’s Palsy however the answer was King’s Evil missed for the bonus also. The Wolves were again stumped with the author of the T.V. adapted Red Riding Quartet series of novels and the Muggers couldn’t rob a bonus “David Peace” also but then grabbed there own Fiddler on the roof for the first question answered of there own. The Wolves and the Muggers were both stumped by the name of the very Dangerous textile workers version of inhalation Anthrax known as “Woolsorter’s Disease”. The Muggers picked up the next question on the site of Elgars statue that faces a cathedral as “Worcester”. But the Wolves then made it a full house of nil points on there own questions when the 1960 musical based on The Once And Future King tetrology novel was incorrectly answered, the Cricketers snapped up a bonus Camelot. The final question saw the author of the South Riding Novel missed by both sides as the answer was Winifred Holtby. Round score 6-0 and a disaster for the favourite Wolves, as the hosts take the overall lead in the match 11-8. Round four the Stink or Twist Round with a theme of The Lion’s Share had the visiting Shoulder Wolves of Jason Crausby, Stuart Birtwell Ste GreenHalgh and Paul Rumbold answer well in gaining four points but sticking on the original name of Jaguar Cars formed by Sir William Lyon which would have gained them the eight. The Cricket Club Muggers of Phil Dodd, Ken Jones, Colin Morgan and Mark Dobson raced to two points but indecision on Sweden’s Gustav II Adolph (Lion of the North), supremacy in the Thirty Years War saw them stick on two. The visiting wolves took there first round of the evening to pull back two points for halftime scores of Radcliffe Cricket Club 13 Shoulder of Mutton 12. Round five saw both sides answer questions with the exception of the ever popular musical category of Rap music and both Rap questions fell on the Wolves to answer first off the teams asked for the second part of the question a round early as the Stage names of the American Thomas Decarlo Callaway and the British Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu were not recognised by either side as Cee-lo Green and Tinie Tempah. Round score 8-4 and a full house for the Muggers, for totals of 21 -16. Round six two part questions saw both teams drop one question with bonus points scored by the opposition other wise two points scored on each question. Round Score seven each for totals of 28-23. Round seven the second individuals had categories of Prime Ministers on film, Tolkien Characters, Animal Alternative Names and Handicrafts. The first category should have had a sub heading of “Actors who played” but both individuals were scored on. Category two went the same way as Tolkien fans were present, the third saw the Crickets grab a Gnu but the Wolverines numerous alternatives proved to be too much for either side and the same went for the handicrafts of Scrimshaw and Macramé round score of 6-4 for totals of 34-27 going into the final round. Round eight saw both teams struggle for points question one for the Cricket club muggers was about the Official basilica home of the Bishop of Rome both teams went obvious Papal home but the answer is St. John Lateran Basilica. The first question for the Shoulder Wolves was who wrote the La Comedie Humane novels with reference to French society etc. The Wolves went with an incorrect Voltaire but the Muggers picked up a bonus “Balzac”. The second question had the Muggers stumped about the on line social networking game launched by Mind Candy and aimed at 7 to 12 year olds but the Wolves snapped up a bonus Moshi Monsters. There own question though had the Wolves stumped again as the Prison design name of Jeremy Bentham where all prisoners can be watched from one point was missed and not picked up for a bonus either as Panopticon was the answer. Emile Zola proved another blank answer for both sides as the author of his 20 novel cycle too long to quote the name of here. The name of the Episcopal cathedral of New York saw the only points scored by the Cricket club on there own questions followed by the final question for the Wolves who scored with the internet expertise of on line games and “Club Penquin”. This meant a final round score of three points each for totals of Radcliffe Cricket Club 37 Shoulder of Mutton 30, the favourites had been Knocked out and the double is now a distinct possibility for the Cricket Club. Who also took the beer leg, but the supporters of the Wolves took the Tie Break question. A very good debut season from the Shoulder of Mutton who will be a strong contender next season if they continue with the squad they have. With the presentation night looming on May 9TH at Heap Bridge Social Club could teams make suggestions for Raffle Prizes etc. A new league Secretary, web author and Bury Times reporter will be required next season could all interested parties put there name forward please. Week 28 18-04-2011 Knockout Cup Final The final competitive game of the season is upon us, as the final of the Handicap Knockout cup takes place at St. Mary’s Catholic Club Radcliffe where all teams are welcome to come and watch, support and see how well they would have done, the final is between the Packhorse Affetside and the Radcliffe Cricket Club. The PackHorse Hoodies have managed to con themselves a twelve point advantage at the start and are on paper favourites now for the title but the league champion Cricket Club Muggers had an eleven point handicap to overcome last week and took just a couple of rounds to drag that back in their favour over the then cup favourites. This one could go all the way and although the Cricketers may well drag back most of the handicap it looks to be a mountain and the Hoodies may well turn out to be cup victors and stop the double….. just…. Maybe….. perhaps. Just to make things clear the scores at the start of the final will be: Final Radcliffe Cricket Club -12 V PackHorse Affetside 0 The final is to be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Club Radcliffe, normal match rules except handicap applies and a coin is tossed for the choice of starting questions and 8-30pm prompt start. All are welcome to attend. Food has been catered .
