Week3
With the questions arriving by post as normal post this week but via an appearance in Littleborough, our thanks to Simon Roberts and John Heenan that everything was at the venues in time. In a week that the league rocketed into life, scoring wise, the game of this week took place at the Cricket Club Radcliffe which had this seasons title favourites host reigning champions Rose and Crown Starling. Phil Dodds team of himself, Tony Kaye, Colin Morgan and Ken Jones have had a determined look about them from go this season while the Rose squad have been slow off the mark. However the Rose took a one point lead in the first round which had turned into a three point deficit after round two, with both teams scoring maximums in rounds three and five and settling for four points each in the stick or twist rounds. The Cricketer’s lead was looking good but on the four or two point round the Rose team of Phil Musgrove, Anne Thompson, Lee Sawbridge and the legend Wally Warrington managed to drop only two points to the home sides four, the home sides lead was cut down to a single point. With a difficult individual round and where the Wimbledon questions had been unwittingly transposed into the final round, teams both scored 5 points. Into the final round and the lead changed hands as the Rose scored on each of the first three questions with Cricketer’s failing on Bjorn Borg’s middle name Rune, and the Rose just failing to pick up the bonus point. The league leaders scored on there final question retaking the lead. It was all down to the final question for the Rose and to be honest it was a stinker, who knows the priests name who was a leader of the peasants revolt eh! No one, so after an excellent match where the bonus points total was just five between the teams the Cricketer’s came out on top and keep there 100% record, the score 55-54.
Peter Taylor’s Rose and Crown Rammy side have woken up to the season at last and in a battle with the much improved Stopes Taverner’s beat the visitors 50-44.
After another closely fought match at Swan and Railway Radcliffe where the scores were all square at the half way point, the visiting Pack Horse Affetside just managed to get a nose in front of the Swan A side to win 37-42.
The Heap Bridge Social Club played host to the SunDial Walmersley Rd and someone has lit the Phoenix Knights bonfire this week, as the home side overran the tough to beat Diallers 49-34 to earn the weeks accolade of Team of the week.
Final game this week was the Swan and Railway B’s visit to Rose and Crown Bury where the lead also changed hands on a regular basis throughout the match. The Rose Bury finally managing to take charge in rounds six and seven and to come out 50-44 winners.
Week 4 Monday Nov 12
In a week of tough games all five matches have valid top match claims.
Match of the week this week is the top of the table clash at the Pack Horse who host the Cricketer’s. Sue Pinder will have to have husband Mike and the Pack lads on a diet of Brittanica this week and if they play to top form this one may be a very close call, Phil Dodd will settle for just another single point win to gain a clear league advantage though.
Enid’s up and down Swan B’s visit Rose Rammy who are on a high after last weeks win so this clash may meet in the middle and a draw could be a fair result.
Rose Starling have the Phoenix Knights visiting, and the Rose may be smarting from the single point loss, the legend Wally still has to swing into top form but the knights are always up for a joust to avenge the cup final loss and it will be close.
SunDial host Rose Bury, if the girls can rally the Dial team it will be very competitive but any slip ups and the ambitious Rose team will take firm control of the match and not look back. Final game is the Taverner’s hosting Swan A, the tavern lads do not want to slip up again but the Swan’s started to hit some form last week and it might continue to improve so Paul Gardener Taverner’s will have to be careful.
