PHIL'S COMMENTS
Now the league is well and truly in its stride there are some fresh faces at the top of the league while the champions are seemingly struggling this year. This week’s quiz appears to have been a tough one for many teams according to the texts.
Close match as predicted took place at the Phoenix Knights venue H.B.S.C where Peter Taylor’s rested cats were visiting fresh from thier week off, with most of the regulars on holiday it was down to Neville the knowledge nugget, Steve and an appearance from Robin apparently to hold the fort but with points being tight the Rose and Crown Rammy took the lead and held out for a win by 39 – 44.Are Taylor’s tigers starting to growl? Team of the week ---- Rose Rammy.
The Radcliffe Derby saw the Paul Gardners Stopes Taverner’s visit the Swan and Railway a’s with mavis’s famous tonic but the a’s are having a tough start to the season with the tonic not quite getting there and with the text message quote d as “a bitch of a quiz this week” the Taverners struggled just as much but just managed to hold out for a 28-36 win.
Sun Dial hosted the league leaders Hairy Hounds of Holcombe Brook and barney’s harem were leading after the first four questions by 1 point to nil, but alas for Helen and Co. It didn’t last and they were losing by 4 at the end of the round. A family emergency depleted the home side to a threesome at half time but with a little bit of manouevouring the home side restored some pride by taking the last two rounds with the visiting hounds requiring strong cold remedies at the end of the evening, however the Hairy Hounds remain unbeaten and flying high with a 27-46 point win. The Packhorse Affetside hosted the Rammy Cricketers. Sue and the boys now know that the newcomers are gaining a reputation for batting hard as they struggled for points all night with the visitors gaining the highest score of the week with a win of 32-54.
Match of the week was at the racecourse Radcliffe where last years runners up hosted the current champions Rose and Crown Starling the first round saw the visitors fall behind 9-4 and with a disputed answer in the next round the home side increase the lead by a further point with a drawn full house in the third had the visitors steadied the ship. The stick or twist saw the first round taken by the rose and two points clawed back but after the half time fresh air and refreshment break the home side went four points further ahead to lead by eight, the four or two round saw the visitors take a risk but with the team captain making a mistake on the third question when he had the answer the home side took a bonus but Jody Sheckter was a four pointer for the visitors and they ended the round only a point further down at nine points adrift. The next two saw a fight back with the Rose team of Kieran, the legend Wally, Terry Brierley and someone else taking both rounds with a full house and a bonus but just falling short to Phil Dodd and his lads and a score of 53-50. Has the crown fallen already for the rose are they playing for the cup even now, stay tuned, same time, same channel.
Week 4 Monday 19th OCT
The fixtures for the week ahead are very interesting and on paper look to be the toughest match ups yet this season.
The Stopes Tavern host the Phoenix knights back to a full strength squad and it will be tough for the home side but I have a suspicion that the early yule tide may just carry on and a home win but only just is on the cards for Paul Gardners men.
Rose Starling have a derby match against the Pack horse with both sides losing last week the match will be close but the home side are going to have to win to keep title hopes alive even at this early stage, sorry Sue another loss for the Pack lads is on the cards.
Hairy Hounds have the Swan and Rail b’s visiting and if the ale’s at full strength the home side will just keep the winning streak going, but they will have to ply the visitors with good fayre and tread carefully.
Rose Rammy host Swan A’s (with both Swan’s swimming away ,just a thought .....what about the return fixture peter?) Anyway with the tigers starting to Growl last week the A’s may find this a little tough but I have a inkling that the Swan’s are just about to start improving so the home cat’s could get caught napping . home win just.
Game of the week is the clash of the two unbeaten sides Rammy Cricketers and Radcliffe Cricketers on paper not much to choose at this stage but experience may just count, however two close tactical encounters in two weeks may just tell on Phil Dodd’s Men and a draw is not beyond the realm’s of possibility, I go for youth over experience and predict a close home win.
All of the league teams can be challenged for a friendly match by any team contact details are on this web site.
