PHIL'S COMMENTS
The week has seen Noah almost refloat the Ark on certain days, especially Sunday, the quiz league sails on regardless. With only four competitive matches this week and a friendly training match at Hare and Hounds, the results were still close and the season continues to be very competitive across the board.
Match of the week is the game at Radcliffe Cricket Club who had the now barney-less SunDial Harem visiting and Helen’s Harem continue their superb form by running the current champions very close in a match that could have gone either way, the champions just managed to overcome the Harem by two points. Final Score 47-45.
PackHorse Affetside have also been playing well and they had the league newcomers Shoulder of Mutton, Holcombe visiting. Sue has the PackHorse team in fine fettle, as the Shoulder side were predicted to run the hosts close and even snatch a debut win but the home side continue unbeaten with a 47-39 win.
St. Mary’s Radcliffe A’s had the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom visiting and after a shaky start the OscAr’s slipped to an eleven point deficit by half time. Taylor’s tigers were purring again following last week’s defeat of the champions. However the OscAr’s attempted to emulate the American Ryder cup golf side and staged a fighting comeback in the second half but similar to the golf, they failed at the final hole to succumb by just four points to lose 41-45 to the Tigers and they couldn’t blame the weather, but they can take heart at a continuing improvement in form this week.
Final match this week saw the Phoenix knight’s tour bus of Heap Bridge Social Club draw up in a crowded car park at Rose and Crown Starling.
The visitors were tipped to win a close contest but the hosts managed to pick up two bonus points of a fiddling stick and Ivor the engine, along with two full houses in the first two rounds to lead 18-12. Round three saw another full house for the hosts whilst the visitors dropped the two stinkers of which number Pope Pius it was and the “pig war” opponents which unsurprisingly were not picked up as bonus’s. Round 4 stick or twist had the knights stubbing out the cigarette theme at four points although they had the Olivier answer in their hands. The Rose matched there four points after the gallant knights ruled the final part an unintelligible question with reference to Vegas Vic the lucky strike man. Halftime score flattered the home side 30-20 as it was a lot closer.
Round five saw the home side pickup the first three questions and a bonus “Pleiades”. The Knights of Neil Jones, Steve Henry, Derek Lord and Barrie Birch missed there first two, Ploughing Monday and the star cluster but picked up the final two and couldn’t pick up the first question of the night dropped by the hosts by way of the obscure “Spy Wednesday”, 7-4 the round score. Round 6 two part questions saw the knights fight back picking up four points with George VI, and a bonus Gypsy with the home side playing safe but the knights had cut the deficit down to eight points with a round score of 6-11. The lead could have been cut further had the knights given the same answer the Rose’s Jayne had given for her failed eastenders question but Jayne snatched the bonus Whitney gratefully, which was the only Bianca Kid’s name anyone had!
Universities were both scored. Whilst the rocking chair was missed by Bob for the home side and not picked up but bean bag was scored by the knights. Someone else wobbled but final picked up blancmange for the home side then missed the cream bonus what a clot, (a local chef also missed this one later and disputed the question, at the bar later in the evening).Round score 5-4 for a 48-39 total. Final round saw the hosts score with Barnado’s and Jayne picked up nomenclature, both the next were dropped when botanical and Wilson could not be recalled by either side. The home side picked up Cleo Laine but a dropped Crystal Palace bonus opportunity, they then dropped Ipswich Town’s Marcus Stewart which wasn’t picked up and Save the Children scored for the knights to give a final score of 53-41 which again flattered the hosts as the match was closer than the score suggests. Many Thanks to Helen Goldsbrough who stepped in to read the questions at the last minute, when she was hoping for a quiet night in.
In a friendly training match the Hare and Hounds lost to the Stopes Tavern 37-47.
Team of the week Sun Dial and Helen’s Harem.

Week 4 11-10-2010
A full fixture list week and it throws up some very interesting games again with close matches in prospect all the way.
Shoulder of Mutton host a Ramsbottom Derby when the Cricket Club visit, and in a close match the hosts may just have got used to the format to win this but the Cricketers will want to kick start there season so may just sneak it. Away win just or it could be a draw!
Radcliffe Cricketers host the Phoenix Knights tour bus, this will be a tough match for the champions again but they may have just enough to pip the visitors but they have to be on top form. Home win but a draw is not to far away.
Hare and Hounds have the St. Mary’s OscAr’s visiting and will find this tougher than expected a home win is predicted but it will be close if the OscAr’s continue their improving form. SunDial Walmersley Rd host the Stopes Tavern and this one will be one of the matches of the week on current form. The Elves will have to play on top form to overcome Helen’s Harem and a draw is the predicted result as it seems to be that close!
St. Mary’s Radcliffe B’s have the Rose and Crown Rammy rolling in and Taylor’s tigers will be looking to complete a consecutive weeks Mary’s double but the hosts could prove to be an to solid to overcome, another Draw could be the outcome here but a home win and only just is the prediction.
Final game has the Rose and Crown Starling visiting the Pack Horse in the top match of the week, as both teams are unbeaten so far. The visitors will have to be on top form to win and a draw is not far away, the PackHorse will be the victors but only just!

A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side.
