PHIL'S COMMENTS
This third week of the season saw a reputed heat wave forming that would see parts of the country hotter than Hawaii…so aloha everybody get the bright shirts out again.
This week’s matches were again very competitive.
First match result saw Helen’s harem whoop whooping as the SunDial Walmersley Rd were hosting highly fancied St. Mary’s Social Club Radcliffe B’s and the form book truly was thrown out of the window when Helen’s Harem scored an excellent win of 49-41, to earn team of the week and match of the week awards.
Second match this week was expected to be close but again turned out differently as PackHorse Affetside had Stopes Tavern climbing the hill, Sue has had the team in hard training as the hosts took charge and the Elves look to have returned to type, by not winning till Christmas, and succumbing to a 48-31 score line.
Third match saw Shoulder of Mutton hosting Rose and Crown Starling with the pub being busy the teams retired upstairs to enjoy the match. The Rose elected to go first and thanks to their medical experts scored on the first question but the Shoulder’s first question had both teams stumped as the Coventry blitz code name of Moonlight Sonata waltzed by. Second question for the Rose saw every castle in Kent named except the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports residence Walmer Castle and it wasn’t picked for a bonus by a similarly flummoxed Shoulder team. Third question on musicals, saw both teams trying to sing it to the title and the Rose grabbed a bonus “with a little bit of luck”. The Shoulder then immediately scored their first point of the match with a return bonus point, “gee, Officer Krupke” from West Side Story. Medical expertise then picked up a bonus point for the Rose with Erythrocytes being the name for Red Blood Cells. Final questions of the Round had the Berlin Airlift code name Plain Fare stump both sides and the Shoulder score on there own Castle question. Possibly one of the most taxing but fair first rounds seen in the quiz, has teams running to revise up on wartime code names if the last two weeks has anything to go by! Round Score 3-4. First individual rounds had categories of American States, Roman Myth, European Football and T.V. Girls.
First questions saw both teams score, second Rose question saw Anne mix Greek and Roman Gods to miss out and the Shoulder had there own failure with the father of Romulus and Remus and a common mistake by rookie question master on the night, Maureen Sutton, meant it couldn’t be passed and a spare wasn’t scored on. Third question saw Football fanatic Terry of the Rose swiftly mix up the press and the league in Italy, to miss Serie A, which was snaffled for a bonus and the Shoulders question was the same as the Roses on the sheet but a quick piece of interpretation saw the home side score with La Liga. The Rose via Kieran scored on both TV Girls with Cheers Shelley Long and Loretta Swit from Mash to tie the round at 5-5 for totals of 8-9. Round three saw both sides race through the first five questions scoring on all, the Shoulder then missed there composer of “A Faust Overture” and the Rose grabbed a bonus. Then the Shoulder's own composer was just missed when someone else opted for Bartoc instead of the correct Liszt, also missed for a bonus by the Shoulder team. The Shoulder then missed there medical question this round but the protein was correctly picked up for a bonus point with Collagen by the Rose. Round Score 4-8, totals score 12-17.
Round Four everybody’s favourite stink or twist round this week’s theme The Sound of Silence. Rose Starling stuttered on the first but with that safely in the bag they went to four points easily, the final part on the Shakespearian character’s final words had them stumped and stuck but that was just “to be” or in this case “not to be”. The Shoulder raced easily to there own four points but had to stick when Paul Simon’s Sound of Silence cover by “The Bachelor’s” wasn’t recognised. Round score 4-4. Halftime totals of Shoulder of Mutton 16 Rose and Crown 21.
Round five saw the Rose pull further ahead when they scored a full house and a bonus point thanks to Kieran’s extraordinary poster, diary and tattoo knowledge of girl bands, but the Shoulder dropped two questions missing their destitute explorer Christopher Columbus passed for a bonus and missing D-notice standing for Defence notice not scored for a bonus, round score 4-9 for totals of 20-30. Round six two part questions saw the Shoulder team of Jason Crawsby, Andrew Cheetham, Malcolm Ashton and Stuart Birtwell, score four points on the first star signs thanks to family birthdays, the Rose played safe for two and then carried the theme on for the rest of the round. The Shoulder also had to opt for a safe two on their own second and third questions but drooped the final question picked up for a bonus single point when J.B. Priestley wasn’t recognised. Round score 8-9 for a total of 28-39. Second individual round had categories of American Football, Pilgrims, 60’s Backing Groups and The Human Body. The Shoulder missed out on the first two questions and both someone else and Kieran scored on there own and picked up the bonus points, the third Category had both individuals stumped but Malcolm Ashton scored with a bonus Chris Farlowe to open the home sides account this round. Final question categories saw both teams score for totals of 3-8.
Final round saw the Rose show encyclopaedic knowledge of Coronation Street but get shot down with Scottish Isle and Birds, with the Shoulder scoring on wacky bacci religious questions and Scottish Isles the round was tied at 5-5 for final totals of Shoulder of Mutton 36 Rose and Crown 52.
The Beer was also won by the Rose but the tie break money was snapped up by the Shoulder who’s hospitality was so good the visitors were seeing goats as they left. An excellent night was had by all.
The Radcliffe Cricket Club hosted the Heap Bridge Social Club Phoenix Knights tour bus this week and in an excellent contest the Cricketers managed to preserve there 100% record by overcoming the visitors in the second half to post a 55-42 score.
Final match had Rose and Crown Ramsbottom hosting the derby match against Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook. Yosemite Sam Reports:-
On Peter Holiday Monday, the Rose and Crown hosted the Hare and Hounds, with Messrs Taylor and Maguire both relinquishing captain duties in search of Foreign Climes (well, they weren’t in Rammy anyway).
The Mighty Cannon had stepped into the breach for the Hairy Hounds and elected to fire off the first salvo. Andy Ainsworth, with a little bit of luck, picked up a bonus on the fourth question to score the first point of the night. The Hairy Hounds were lucky enough to receive the only other answerable question of the round, so the first round score was 0-3.Round Two saw Rose Rammy come back strongly, like a winged messenger, gaining a full house and a bonus to take the round 9-4 and gain the lead in the match. Round three was similar but the Rose didn’t quite make a full house, taking the round 7-4 and consolidating their lead with totals of 16-11.
Round four saw the Hairy Hounds Muffle there way to Four points but the Roses were silenced by the Mafia and had to stick on two. Halftime score Rose and Crown Ramsbottom 18 Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook 15.
Round Five had the Hairy Hounds quickly out of the traps, as they won the round 4-9 to retake the lead for the first time since round one. Round six, two parters, saw the Rose answer three out of four on the second part and miss out on their attempted four pointer . The Hairy Hounds had twice four pointed before picking up a bonus three and then playing safe on the final two answers for an excellent round score of 6-15 and totals of 28-39.
Round seven saw Andy A’s amazing Oceanus Hopkins birthplace guess, picking up a bonus. Mr Cannon had problem with his glands, so Rose Rammy picked up the extra bonus, and took the round 4-3.
Round eight saw Rose Rammy regain some pride and score eight but the Hairy Hounds lead had become unassailable after the Mighty Cannon had found some adrenalin and shot down the Ernie Bishop question. Round score 4-8.
Final result Rose and Crown 40 Hare and Hounds 46.
After which a very nice tatty supper was served and the Rammy Roses took the beer leg 18-17. So the Hairy Hounds chalked up there first win but must try harder to make some money. Ramsbottom Cricket Club were whittling Bails this week.

Week 4 03-10-2011
Week three has a very even match list by the look of the fixtures.
Top match should be the local Derby clash at St. Mary’s Social Club Radcliffe where the B’s host the Radcliffe Cricket Club, if both sides are on form the score will be close but St. Mary’s slipped up last week and a drop in form will mean the visitors will pounce. Prediction …… home win just although a tie will not be far off.
Ramsbottom Cricket Club host the PackHorse with both teams starting off similar hard to predict but perhaps Sue has the PackHorse team firing and it perhaps will give them the edge…just yet again.
Stopes Tavern have the SunDial visiting and the Harem may just mesmerise the Elves if form holds in another very close contest.
Heap Bridge return home after there travels to host the Shoulder of Mutton with both sides playing well a draw could be the score, if not either side by a point only.
Final match this week is the war of the Roses with Starling being the hosts, with Rammy losing last week and Starling chalking up a first win the form book says the home team will prevail but it will be close and Rammy could just nick it.
Hare and Hounds are having a week off.
