PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week4 With the postal problems now history and a question no doubt for a future quiz, week four of the league saw clear leaders emerge at the top of the table. The prediction was for top match to be at Pack Horse Affetside where Mike Pinder’s much improved second placed team were hosting the title favourites and top team on goal difference, Radcliffe Cricket Club. But it seemingly turned out to be a one way affair. Sue must have put the Pack lads on a ladybird Brittanica diet instead of the big version as the hosts were overwhelmed 30-54 by the unbeaten clear leaders of the league Radcliffe Cricket Club. Match of the week turned out to be the clash at the Swan and Railway. The home team Swan and Railway B’s have the potential to be almost unbeatable and can turn out to be just average the next however Peter Taylor has now got his Rose Rammy team purring nicely after a stuttering start to the season. The Rose Rammy winning 39-44 in a very competitive tight affair on the night. The SunDial, Walmersley Rd have had a difficult few weeks and this week hosted the Rose and Crown Bury who are determined to be gain some silverware this season. Ian’s Rose team are very difficult to reel in if they get a lead and put the Slipping Diallers in the shade with a 39-50 win. Swan and Railway Radcliffe A’s visited the Stopes Tavern. Paul Gardener’s Tavern side started well and took a good lead in the first half but Mavis’s tonic kicked in and the Swan’s fought back in the second to make a closer contest than the score might suggest 47-37. Final game this week was the visit of Heap Bridge Social Club to the Rose and Crown Starling. The Phoenix lads of Barrie Birch, Derek Lord, Neil Jones and Steve Henry didn’t get off to a good start and were chasing the match throughout coming closest to the hosts at the halfway point. The reigning champions Rose have not yet found a run of results this season and faltered around rounds three and four. However with a strong showing from Kieran Goldsbrough and Lee Sawbridge also the legend Wally Warrington stirring from his early rounds nap, they took hold of the match in the second half and eased to a 50-41 win. Week 5 Monday Nov 19th With the league now fully alight on these cold dark nights, some very close contests are again in prospect this week. The battle of the Rose’s this week is at Rose Rammy where Rose Starling are the visitors, this could be top match as Rammy are now in good form and Starling are still slightly vunerable but in a game that could easily go either way, the visitors may just have it. The Cricketer’s have the enigma team Swan B’s coming to bat, and if the Swan’s are on form, an upset for the leaders will not be a surprise. However with Phil Dodd having his leading team in imperious form this season a home win is expected. Rose Bury host the Pack Horse Affetside, another potential top match in the offing. However after a fall against the leaders last week, another refusal is on the cards for the Packhorse team as a home win is the likely result. Swan A could open there account for the season against the visiting SunDial team but the Sundial will not want to lose again after having a difficult few weeks against some form teams, an away win is probable but it will be close on recent form. The tip for Game of the week should be at Heap Bridge Social Club where the Taverner’s are visiting, if Neville is on form for the hosts, the Phoenix boys will be gunning for a win but the Taverner’s are playing well and may just hold form to squeeze a hard fought result in their favour. With free weeks for teams coming up, now is the time for anyone, pub, club or society thinking of forming a team to play a friendly against a league side under league rules just give us a ring contacts available on the web site as below. Suggestions for raffle prizes are also required from league sides, in time for the forthcoming Christmas Quiz Night.
