PHIL'S COMMENTS

This week saw some excellent matches and the emergence of a clear league leading team, with two teams losing there unbeaten records.
Two of the unbeaten teams were playing each other, so one record was more than likely going to go and it was the newcomers Ramsbottom Cricket Club who had to give ground but only just in the match of the week, to the now top of the league Radcliffe Cricket Club. In a nip and tuck battle Phil Dodd’s Radcliffe Cricketer’s just managed to hold on again for the second week running to a take a narrow victory by just one question against Rammy’s new boys 42-44.
Rose and Crown Ramsbottoms tiger’s took an early lead against the visiting Swan and Railway A’s by 11 points to 2 in the first round but then they had an almighty struggle to hold on to the lead for the remainder of the fixture and the improving Swan A’s are starting to hit some form maybe mavis’s tonic is starting to have the desired effect, as Peter Taylor and the Cat’s were glad there wasn’t another round to just pass the line 45-41.
Having ceded top spot last week, the Hairy Hound’s nose dived toward there usual mid table mediocrity losing there unbeaten record in the process, reports Ian Openshaw .This week opponents Swan and Railway b’s were the visitors and they stormed to a 6-9 lead in the first round and then continued to inflict punishment by scoring 50% higher in most rounds and trouncing the hounds with the highest score of the evening. The Swan B’s won all but rounds 6&7. The beer round was closer going to a tie break, with the hounds recovering some kudos by only being one year out on the answer. Swan B’s were in magnificent form by only dropping 4 questions during the match (even the pop questions were no stumbling block!) Helped by the ghost of quiz pub’s past in the shape of Alec’s son-in-law, who last played for the team 3 pub moves ago when the team represented and played at the Bridge inn until they left with a bang and the home searching began.
Final score 40-60, team of the week Swan and Railway b’s .
The traditional slow starting Stopes Tavern have been training on figgy pudding to put them in the right frame of mind and for Paul Gardners team it’s working as they pinched the stockings off of the chimney of the traveling Phoenix knights now back to full strength and over any jet lag from the week’s Spanish siesta. The Knights seem to have left there form in the warmer climes as the high flying Taverner’s eased to a 47-39 win.
Final match took place at the Rose and Crown Starling where the local derby against Pack horse Affetside were riding in, Mike Pinder was making his first appearance after his local thespian adventures along with Adrian Finbow, John Hutton and Simon Waddingon supporting the match was close but in the first half the Rose seemed to gain a point or two a round until the stick or twist and at the half had a four point lead 23-19. However the second half of the match saw the Pack lads win two of the four rounds but lose out crucialy on the four or two round six. The home side of Kieran Goldsbrough, Anne Thompson, Bob Selby and Lee Sawbridge eased home with a 49-43 point scoreline.
Week 5 Monday 26th OCT
The matches this week are all on paper going to be tough and at least one team may open there account for the season.
Heap Bridge S.C. is the venue for the visit of Ramsbottom Cricket club and the Phoenix Nights should be over the holiday lag that affected them this week, so a very close game is expected however the visitors may still just have the edge, an away win but it may be more difficult than it appears.
Pack Horse have Barney and the Harem from the SunDial climbing the hill and in a battle to score there first win of the season both teams have claims for the result with Mike back for the Pack Lads and Barney and the Girls returning from a rest week this could be a candidate for match of the week and a draw may be a result here, but a narrow home win could be on the cards.
After this weeks battles this next fixture looks to be another humdinger of a match with the Swan b’s having the Lads from Stopes Tavern visiting in the Radcliffe Derby, with an huge win over the Hairy Hounds, the Swan b’s will still be buzzing but Paul Gardners Taverners think all there Christmas’s have come at once with this continuing streak, possible match of the week also but I think the visitors may just have the edge however this could be the first draw of the season.
Radcliffe Cricketers have the Hairy Hounds bounding in and even though they lost last week this will be a closely fought contest for the hounds and they may, if the form returns win, but it may be Phil Dodds cricketers who may just sneak the points again, but they will have to hunt with the pack for most of the match.....
Final match this week is War of the Roses as Rammy have the champions from Starling visiting, with Rammy purring along nicely and the visitors blowing a little hot and cold this will be close but the visitors may just have enough humph to take the match, close away win.
The Swan A'S will be in training on mavis's tonic.
A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on the website at www.buryquizleague.co.uk
