PHIL'S COMMENTS

A full weeks fixture list this week as the cold of autumn sets in, don’t know about other venues but Affetsides outside temperature was icy when Rose Starling retired to there abodes.
First match report this week is from Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook and Yosemite Sam :- St Mary’s Hey turned up at the Hounds of Holcombe to do battle. The Quiz was shifted out of the usual room as this was being prepared for the 11 day beer festival starting on the 14th Oct. (Plenty of guest beer choices available every day).
Round one went to the hairy hounds courtesy of a bonus, 7-6.Round two saw the Great Caruso pounding the French arm of the law and mounting an all out attack but the hail Mary’s struck back with the forerunner to the Audi Quattro. Rounds three and four were even Stevens giving a half time score of 22-19 to the Hairies.
The Hairy Hounds increased their lead by one in round five, the saints came marching back to take round six 8-5, narrowing the gap to just one point and a 33-32 score, which was putting the frighteners on the Hairy Hounds good and proper . The Saints then eased the home sides worries by blanking the seventh round and with the Hairy’s correctly shading there windows to score an eight. Round 8 saw the Hounds increase the punishment by taking the round 9-2 giving a final score 50-34, which certainly flattered to deceive. Beer leg went to the Hairy Hounds. Yosemite Sam then wandered off for a bath, well he did have a birthday coming!
Match Two saw St. Mary’s B’s host an in form Rose and Crown Ramsbottom side and in a closely fought battle, the hosts just managed to hold off Taylor’s Tigers, the Saints winning by a slender four points 42-38 and almost match of the week.
Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village, hosted the Rammy Derby this week, in match three, with the Ramsbottom Cricket Club facing the debutants. John Ireland took the question masters chair after his short hospital visit and with the atmosphere at the cosy venue being rather intimate almost had the supporters acting as fireman, when they stopped laughing, as the table top candles set the questions alight. John said he had everything under control but will probably cut down on the local brew next time he asks the questions just in case. The match saw the Cricketers on top form, which they had to be against the impressive debut side, and they took the match away from the Shoulder in the second half with a final score of 37-46.
Stopes Tavern had to visit the in form SunDial Walmersly Road and the Elves have had a wobbly start to the season but seemed to have steadied the ship by training hard and Helen’s harem could not hold them back as form deserted them. The Elves ran out 33-44 winners on the night.
Radcliffe Cricket Club had the Heap Bridge Phoenix Knights visiting and with the champions wavering form wise early season, the knights would have thought about a winning visit but Phil Dodd has mustered his team into some sort of order and the form has returned. The Cricketers posting top score on the night with a winning 53-39 scoreline.
Final match this week was clash of the two unbeaten teams at the PackHorse Affetside with local rivals Rose and Crown Starling climbing the hill. The hosts were missing the Pinder’s due to Am Dram commitments so an unfamiliar side faced the visitors. Round one saw both sides open with good answers but then the visitors dropped the earwig which the hosts snapped up quickly both sides answered the third but the hosts dropped Chris Patterson which had the visitors describing all he had played for but not his name, 7-6 the hosts lead. Round two saw a full house up to the motor vehicles but the hosts captured the bonus “Prisoner”. Round score 7-6 to the hosts again. Round Three saw the visitors grab a full house and the hosts drop the rope with Rodeo and a drum roll which were not picked up. Round score 4-8, the visitors take the lead 18-20. Round Four had my little eye stumping the Rose and little Ross stumped the Pack for four all and a score of 22-24 at the halfway mark.
Round five had the Rose struggling with their Latin and the final answer whilst the PackHorse picked up the Latin bonus but miss there own Latin and the final bonus, however a score of 7-4 meant the hosts of James Perkin, Joe Walk, Pat Neininger and John Hutton had retaken the lead overall by a point 29-28. Round Six saw the visitors play safe with a full house of two’s although they had a couple of fours on the table. The hosts had a disasterous first three questions by missing Callaghan, Chris Cowdrey, and Clive Dunn and with someone else missing the bonus Callaghan also, much to the visiting team of Kieran, Bob and Lee’s regret, but snapping up the other two point’s bonus. The hosts grabbed a four on the last with a quick “Wash”. 4-10, round Score, for a total of 33-38. Round seven individuals saw the visitors stumble and pick up just a bonus Queen from the first three with the hosts snapping up bonus C.S. LEWIS and Grey but dropping Dolly the Sheep, it was a good thing the visitors grabbed Louise Brown on the last question as an opposition member was on the research team of Sir Patrick Steptoe’s!
Round score 6-3, total score 41-39 and the atmosphere had suddenly become very tense for both teams. Round 8 saw the hosts answer the first two whilst the visitors dropped the second, which wasn’t picked up, a one point gap was the match score . The hosts dropped the Lake District which was snapped up by the Rose who played out with snowdrop and Lee’s expertise on Hollyoaks with the Pack doing the Lindy Hop. A final round score of 6-7 for a total score of 45-48. Match of the week certainly and team of the week Rose and Crown Starling, rather self indulgently!

Week 5 18-10-2010
A full and very competitive fixture list week that throws up some very close matches in prospect all the way down the list.
Rose Rammy host the Rammy derby this week and this match looks to be a match of the week candidate if Taylor’s Tiger’s can reproduce their form of a couple of weeks ago. A draw could be on the cards but if the Hounds are running into top form, I suspect the visitors will pinch the points by not very many at all. Away win just.
Rose Starling host the SunDial Walmersley Road and Helen’s Harem, the hosts are just managing to keep their unbeaten record whilst the visitors have had a tough couple of weeks. This one will be close if Helen whips the Harem into the form shown in the first games and the home side will have to be very careful. Home win but very close.
Ramsbottom Cricketers have St. Mary’s B’s visiting in a match that has match of the week written all over it. The hosts form has improved lately to last years good spell and the visitors are blowing more hot than cold lately also so a titanic battle is expected. A draw looks likely but the visitors may have the edge by just one point only!
Heap Bridge host the PackHorse Affetside and with the visitors losing for just the first time this season against the current league leaders they will be wanting to keep the pressure at the top of the league on, but the hosts will be smarting after last weeks relatively heavy loss and will be tough to beat another top match is the prospect here but the visitors may just sneak the win by a point only again.
St. Mary’s OscArs have the Shoulder of Mutton visiting and this is another close battle in prospect. The hosts will want to open there seasons account but the visitors have run a few teams very close up to now and this may just be there account opener also, a draw is not out of the question and I am fence sitting as that is my prediction for this one.
Final game this week is the Radcliffe Derby at Stopes Tavern where the Cricketers are the visitors. The Elves are starting to hit a run of top form again and the Cricketers are yet to show the constant all conquering form of last season, in another match of the week prospect if the Elves are confident with there answers they will take it, just, but they will be run to just a point behind by the visitors!
Another week where obvious winners are scarce in this highly competitive league season.
