PHIL'S COMMENTS
The fourth week of the season has the hot spell dieing away and cold weather forecast and it could be enough to put the post office in long trousers, however this weeks quiz league saw the competition really warm up.
First match and what was predicted to be top match was the Radcliffe Derby at St. Mary’s Social Club where the B’s were hosting league leaders and current champions the Cricket Club in a high scoring contest the Cricketers took hold of the contest and eased away to a win yet again, against favoured opposition and scored heavily as they have all season, final score 45-59.
Second match this week and match of the week was the contest at Ramsbottom Cricket Club where the visitors were the PackHorse Affetside both teams have had similar scores posted at the start of this season and it was predicted to be close but the match was reported as neck and neck all the way, with no more than four points separating the teams at any stage and the final result 47-47, just making it top match as the results below will show.
Stopes Tavern hosted the SunDial Walmersley Rd and the Elves hit form against Helen’s Harem both teams scored well on the night but the Elves are finally up and running as they posted an excellent win with a score of 57-40. Team of the week Stopes Tavern.
Heap Bridge Social Club touched base this week after two matches of travels and they were hosting the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village, with points being tight during the match and both teams scored well, the result was always going to be close but the Shoulder gained the upper hand and ran out winners 44-49.
Final match this week was the war of the Roses with Rose and Crown Starling hosting Rose and Crown Ramsbottom, and Taylor’s Tigers were roaring on the night with both teams having a full compliment of players and supporters attending.
Rose Rammy with Peter back at the helm chose to go first and it proved to be an excellent choice. First question had the Tigers a little perplexed but the correct answer of Maoris appeared but the Rose Starling missed out with there first question and it caused consternation and debate amongst the team post match when they couldn’t decide the Poet Laureate author of the verse Ken Barlow read at the remembrance service for victims of the Tram crash on TV’s Coronation street. Starling’s top Corrie viewer was scoring on the night and as Starling’s other expert Jayne is not available this season it was left to the only part time Corrie watcher Terry to try and recall the verse, but the logic of the question was missed and both teams opted for old laureate’s when the current one was the answer. Both teams scored with the next two questions, but Taylor’s Tigers came to there own poetry question and failed to figure the quote “A Schoolboy hold’s a leather ball in a photograph on a bedroom wall” that was first read on the 13th anniversary of what disaster in 2003 as commemorating the Hillsborough Disaster, it was snapped up for a bonus by Starling. However the final question had the Starlings stumped as the Maori player capped at all levels except senior by the All Blacks but then playing for England from 2008 was missed by both sides and Riki Flutey had sidestepped them all. Round score 5-6.
Round two individuals had categories of Pub Names, River Borders, 2010 Films and English County Identities. Both teams unsurprisingly grabbed the first questions correctly, the second saw both teams miss out but opposite players both picked up bonus points with Mozambique and Luxembourg. The A team was grabbed by the Tigers Margaret on the next question but the Rose missed the Sex in the city clue and it was also missed for a bonus. The final question saw the Cornwall question snapped up by the Tigers who are regular visitors to the county and the extremely hard reciprocal question had all teams stumped on the night it appears as no one could hazard a guess at the county of Yorkshire from the clue. Round score 3-7 for a total of 8-13.
Round three saw the Tigers pick up points on the first but the Rose couldn’t recognise Europoort as the correct answer although it was on the list, it was also missed as a bonus. Question two this round saw the Tigers draw further away a give there own headache to Starling by recognising Aspirin and Starling handed a bonus point to the Tigers by not figuring the Charles Wells inspired “The man who broke the bank at Monte Carlo”. The third question saw both teams score but the Tigers dropped a very difficult final question when U.P.S.’s Worldport passed everybody by. The Rose Starling pulled back two points on there own final question for a round score of 4-7.
The Stink or Twist round had a theme of Martin this week although he was only supporting the Tigers this week. The Tigers quickly and easily advanced to four points but needed the literary skills perhaps of the author on the sidelines as Daniel Martin wasn’t attempted for the eight. The Rose Starling took a more precarious route to two points but Martyn Williams side stepped them and they stuck on two although the final question would have scored if reached.
Round score 2-4 for halftime totals of Rose and Crown 14 Rose and Crown 24 with Ramsbottom having the advantage.
Round five saw both sides score on all questions until the final two with the Hopman cup eluding both teams and although recognised as the correct branch of weaponry the Webley and Scott Pistol wasn’t named by either side . Round Score 6-6 totals 20-30.
The writing seemed on the wall for the Rose Starling side as the Rose Rammy Tigers of Peter and Ian Taylor, Sue Booth and Margaret Chamberlain had a good ten point lead with the Rose Starling team of Bob, Kieran, Lee and Terry knowing that perhaps there only chance was to take risks on the two part round six. First question of the round saw the Rose having to play safe on the base ingredient of Pimm’s No.5 but miss the answer by saying Bourbon instead of Rye Whiskey (technically the same but….). The bonus point was also missed. The Tiger’s were also perplexed by Pimm’s No.6 but a guess of Vodka gave them two points. Second questions saw both sides grab a maximum four, with the third going for two points as St. Swithun’s day was recognised by the Starling side but with no festival goer’s on either side Glastonbury’s St. Dunstan was missed by both sides. Both sides opted for safety on the last and a round score of 8-8 was the total.
Round seven second individual had categories of Art Gallery Renovations, St. Matthew’s Gospel, Young United and Radio 4 Stalwarts, the home Rose Starling side must have been inspired as they scored a full house and picked up a bonus point for Gateshead as the home of the Baltic Centre, whereas the Tigers lost there first round of the evening by dropping two questions the gospel question being missed also, round score 9-4 for totals of 37-42. The final round saw the tension rise for both teams question by question as the Rose scored on the first, but Taylor’s Tigers gave away a bonus point with Noble Gases, the Rose then missed the French Men’s Singles Musketeer’s cup in tennis and the Tigers missed a bonus point but they grabbed there own question on Seaside Piers. Third saw the home Starling score with Saucy postcards but the Tigers missed the women’s French singles trophy name of Lenglen however the Starlings also missed the bonus with just one question left each both sides were staring at there own scorecards for the permutations, with the match score standing at 42-44. The Rose Starling with much deliberation and cogitation because of the understanding of their question saw Kieran eventually come up with the correct answer of Halogen to level the scores, the Tigers question had them also trying to recall an answer, but the correct one was nowhere to be seen and was passed over for a chance of grabbing the win, however the Starling side was also left wanting as the correct Viper Room answer passed them by also.
Final Round Score7-2 for a final result of Rose and Crown Starling, a fortunate 44 and Rose and Crown Ramsbottom, an unfortunate 44. Almost match of the week.
The beer leg saw the Rose Rammy grab the spoils but the tie break question was a draw!
The Hare and Hounds were in training on real ale this week.

Week 5 10-10-2011
Week five has only four matches taking place due to Ramsbottom Cricketer’s going on tour to Spanish Isle (rescheduled for Jan2012). However all the matches scheduled look to be very close.
Top match could be at the Shoulder of Mutton where they host the Radcliffe Cricket Club, if the home side are on form the score could be close however the visitors are unbeaten and have posted top scores in all the early weeks and have looked peerless this season so far. Away win but any slip ups will be costly for the Champions.
The SunDial would have been hosting Ramsbottom Cricket club this week and at this stage of the season my prediction would be a home win or a draw just, only , perhaps.
Stopes Tavern host this weeks Radcliffe Derby with St. Mary’s B visiting, with St. Mary’s slipping up substantially against the champions last week and the Elves winning by a similar margin this match has a possible draw written all over it, if form holds otherwise the Elves may trail at the end.
Heap Bridge return to there travels to visit the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom and there bus will have to have a good handbrake as the Tiger’s may just be smarting over last weeks draw however the visitors also drew against the same opposition just a month ago and this match may also go for a draw if not a point victory for either side.
Final match this week see the Hare and Hounds climb the hill for a visit to the PackHorse and with the home side scoring a very tight tie last week this match could go the same way, however the visitors tough start may have been eased by the enforced break last week and they may just take this match but it will be only just!
Rose and Crown Starling are having a week off.
