Week5
Points scoring wise this week it appears as though the league had caught the cold virus that is sweeping the area, but all the contests were still very competitive and close.
League leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club were host to the Swan and Railway B’s in the local derby this week, and in a game that had the potential for a slip up by Phil Dodd’s leaders, they cruised to a win and top scored on the night 46-34.
Rose and Crown Bury had second placed PackHorse Affetside visiting, with the home side missing two regulars Andy Ainsworth and Dave “Marvellous “ Wright. The hosts hopefully drafted in two JC’s for some divine intervention, but after being crucified in the second round they were always a furlong behind the Packhorse who bounced back after last weeks mauling by the Cricketers to earn the team of the week accolade and keep up their title aspirations 36-39.
The Swan and Railway A’s had the SunDial Walmersley Rd visiting. Despite the visitors having only 3 players available the Dial team hung on to a lead in a closely fought match to win, the Swans John Heenan said the question master had a good a game as the referee in the Scotland Italy Soccer Match, has Mavis’s tonic been got at? Trouble at mill, and the score 28-32.
The battle of the Rose and Crowns at Ramsbottom between the hosts and Starling saw the reigning champions lose again. In a match where the lead changed hands a number of times, the home side of Peter Taylor, Sue Booth. Margaret Chamberlain and Martin Baggolet came back from a three point’s deficit at the half, to win 42-40.
The match of the week took place at Heap Bridge Social club where the Stopes Taverner’s were visiting. The Phoenix nights lads had a predicted mighty battle against Paul Gardener’s in form Taverner’s, but with Neville on home soil the Phoenix lads pipped it by a point 38-37.
Week 6 Monday Nov 26th
With it being the time of year for “man flu” (the author is suffering) can anyone give the league leading Cricketer’s a cold, it is Rose Rammy’s turn to host them this week and with Peter Taylor’s cats purring well, they may run them close but I expect the Cricketer’s Lions to roar to victory.
Rose and Crown Bury have the troubled Swan A’s visiting. With Ian Openshaw’s home side slipping up last week they will be wanting to get back to winning ways and the Swan’s tonic hasn’t had any effect this year but if Louise and Julie are on form it could be possible,… maybe,…. perhaps,… almost.
The local derby at the Rose Starling has the PackHorse tieing up, with the Rose’s crown slipping away and the Packhorse in some form, the home side may struggle. The legend Wally has even started asking questions of his own form recently. This could be match of the week and the home side may even play Kieran’s visiting Russian substitute to confuse the opposition but on recent results alone, an away win - just - is likely.
Final game and tip for match of the week is the Stopes Tavern at home to the SunDial, if the visitors are at full strength, the Dial may be strong enough but with the Taverner’s being just pipped at the post last week, Paul will want to coax his side to a stabilising win. Home win hard fought predicted.
The Swan B’s and the Phoenix lads are on a free week and are up for a challenge.
So now is the time for anyone, pub, club or society thinking of forming a team to play a friendly against a league side under league rules just give any of us a ring contacts available on the web site as below.
Suggestions for raffle prizes are also required from league sides, in time for the forthcoming Christmas Quiz Night.
