Week5Monday 27th OCT
And on this onset of Arctic weather (wasn’t all autumns like this in the 60’s /70’s) this week has seen some extremely close and competitive matches. The match of the week was a very difficult choice this week but it went to the draw that occurred at Rose and Crown Bury where Ian Openshaw’s team, who are at last showing some form, only just missed triumphing over close rivals Pack Horse Affetside and it was only decided, when Sue Pinder’s Pack Lads drew level at the penultimate question and the Rose could not benefit from a final question blank, score 40-40.The other contender for match of the week was the battle at Radcliffe Cricket Club, where the current champions and league leader’s took on cup winners and team of the week Swan and Railway b’s and only just kept there unbeaten record, with a final round nail biter this also went to the wire, but the home side finally coming out on top 49-48. The Swan and Railway A’s got back onto winning ways again when they overcome visitors SunDial Walmersly Rd, fuelled by Mavis’s tonic, they managed to eek out a 36-31 win in a close match. The notorious slow starting Stopes Taverners were visiting the lads at Heap Bridge, and with a run of form shaping up, the Phoenix nights lads pulled away steadily when they got there nose in front to win 44-32. Final match was the Rose and Crown derby between Rammy and Starling, and it seems last years runners up are starting to run into form, but the first half was a very close affair only the stick or twist round making the difference. The second half proved the undoing of Peter Taylors favoured team (on last weeks predictions)with local author Martin Baggoley, (who’s new book is out now by the way) playing well and Sue Booth and Ian Taylor assisting they still blew up in the four or two round and could not pickup the bonus’s on the individuals, a disheartened blank in the final round meant a win for the visiting Rose Starlings of 36-55. Week 6 Monday 3rd Another intriguing weeks fixtures start with what could be a close match at Rose Rammy, where the league leaders might be run close again if Rammy keep to recent form, they are blowing hot and cold and if last week they were cold!!!! Phil Dodds leaders have got to keep there high level of form to stave of the head-hunters of the league. Rose Bury host the Swan A’s, who may if a dose of Mavis’s Tonic has been delivered offer tough opposition to the form recovering home side, another draw could happen, but a slight home win is favoured. Stopes Tavern has the SunDial on tour and if Barney and the girls hit form, the slow starting Taverners will be chasing the match, but the Taverners could come out on top on this one; but only just! Final match this week and potentially match of the week, is the local derby between the Rose Starling and Packhorse Affetside, this match could be the seasons defining match for the home Rose team and a loss would mean an all out cup assault, but a win for the visitors would improve there title challenge which is still very valid, either way it will be very interesting, close but an away win in a surprise prediction. Swan and Railway b’s and the Phoenix lads at Heap Bridge are on a free week. We have had interest from a team wishing to join the league so friendlies may be organised over the coming weeks. |
