PHIL'S COMMENTS
The autumn has taken a big hold of the weather with everyone getting blasted by multi-coloured tree leaves there was some colourful language about the teams this week as the questions have become harder for both sets of teams but no complaints have been forth coming.
There was a tense match at Radcliffe Cricket Club where the Hare and Hounds Holcombe brook were the visitors. Ian Openshaw reports, First round, Hairy Hounds elected to go first. Round finished 9 - 4 to Radcliffe Cricket Club. Hounds, remembering last week's mauling, the Hounds thought "here we go again, but ten times worse". 2nd round saw a full house from Hounds and the Cricketers getting 2 wrong, so their lead was cut to 1. Another full house from the Hounds in 3rd round saw them gain a lead of 1, alas with the Hounds not knowing Harry Truman's state and Cricketers guess coming good for them on Harrowing King meant that Cricketers regained a lead by 3 at half-time. Hounds were pining and suffering from a lack of real ale (even more upsetting when you consider that the Cricket Club had just had a beer festival at weekend and Hounds had to walk past all the empty casks).Second half and Round 5 saw a 10 - 4 mauling of the Hounds, and Cricketers took the next 2 rounds to lead by a huge 12 going into the last round. To draw the match Hounds needed a full house and all 4 bonuses with Cricketers scoring a big fat zero. Phil Dodd’s Cricketers failed on their first two questions, Hound picked up both bonuses and answered their own is it, could it be... The Cricketers were getting a little edgy, however they answered their third question correctly and so it was all over. So after attempting to slightly worry the Cricketers, the Hounds left with their tails between their legs in search of some real ale. Final Score 53-45.
The PackHorse Affetside had the Sun Dialers of Barney and the girls riding in and on paper this looked to be a close match but the home team romped away with it, ending up with the second highest score on the night and breaking there duck for the season, but where was the cheerleader Sue Pinder?, by the amount of text’s I received from Minorca, It appears Sue and Mike were having another sangria in celebration, but then if the team is winning without them will they get back in.......... watch this space. Team of the week the Pack Horse.
Match of the week was the Radcliffe derby at the Swan and Railway between the B’s and the non- stop carol singing in form Stopes Taverner’s. On season’s form this was alway’s going to be close but it got as close as it could have at the end, throughout the match no side gained a clear advantage and with last round nerves aplenty no team gave ground and the result a draw at 39-39.
The War of the roses was held at the Ramsbottom Rose and Crown venue and Starling flew in. The match began with a first round draw the first individuals saw the home side pull ahead by a single point when “The Legend Wally” missed his penitentuary but round three saw the visitors take a strong lead when they outscored the home side by 10 to two, to lead 20-13. The stick or twist saw the visitors of Kieran Goldsbrough, Jayne Rowley, The legend Wally Warrington and someone else stick on the same point as the Hairy Hounds above, but the home side failed at the same four stage, and a score of 24-13 was posted at the half (it will get there in the year 2025 apparently). Round five saw the home side claw a point back and the tigers of Martin, Peter, Sue and Margaret were stirring into action it seemed. The Four or two round had both sides flumuxed and points were few, but again the home side pulled a point back. The second individual had the home side struggling, and the Starlings managed to extend their lead to fifteen, which mathematically couldn’t be hauled back, the home side regained some pride by taking the last round but still succumbed to a score of 35-47 in favour of the Rose Starling. The final match report this week has an air of mystery around it as the result is known but the actual score isn’t at this point in time. The league secretary had not received notification of the score from the home team Phoenix Knights and had enquired but the faded memory could not recall (hic) the actual score (hic) but a good night was had by all and the visitors to Heap Bridge Social club who were the Ramsbottom Cricket Club took the match by a score of about 29 -36 and that will be confirmed when someone on the home team (hic) remembers (hic, burp).
The Swan A'S Were testing Mavis's brew.

Week 6 Monday 2nd Nov
Match of the week this week is the delayed opener and beer festival missing match between the Hairy Hounds of Holcombe Brook and Rose Starling the form book is very close on this one the Hounds took a loss against the Cricketers and will want to bounce back, while the Rose are hitting some good form after a slow start. A draw may be a result but a close home win may be it on the night.
Barney and the girls host the Phoenix Knights and with last weeks monster out of the way, the girls and Barney will run the Knights close - but will it be enough. Away win but not easiest match for the visitors and it will be that close!
Swan A’s have the league leading Cricketers visiting in the Radcliffe Derby this week, and on paper the visitors look to be in too strong a run of form, but they may be in for a surprise. An Away win but tighter than they may bargain for, especially if the tonic is back to full strength.
Stopes have the Rose Rammy Tiger’s visiting and after giving the champions a scare or two this week they will give Paul’s Tavern lads food for thought also, if Peter’s tigers are at full roar and the Taverner’s have had there plum pudding training, then this could be match of the week, but the home team may be just to strong at this time but another draw is not beyond possibility!
PackHorse have Swan b visiting and on this weeks result alone the Swans may find it tough but the Swan B’s are hitting form after an indifferent start, so close game but the visitors may just take it, in another candidate for match of the week.
The Ramsbottom Cricketers are having tea and cakes this week.
A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on this website.
