PHIL'S COMMENTS
A full and very competitive fixture list this week was the prospect, as the artic swans flew in to Britain early, which folklore states that winter will be harsh, and the winds straight from the north pole blowing across the country does nothing to dispel that theory. Our cosy venues had good competition to warm them though.
First match report this week is the visit of the SunDial Walmersly Rd to league leaders Rose and Crown Starling. Helen’s harem has been playing well this season and the home side knew they were in for a close match which it proved to be, bonus points were the difference at the end of the game. Helen showed her secret this season when she chose to go second in a very noisy venue on the night, and in round one both teams started well, scoring on the first two questions. The Rose missed the original “ambulance meaning” but the Harem also missed the bonus. The SunDial missed the Abdeen Palace location and the Rose snatched a bonus, both teams scored the last to give a round score of 7-6.
Round two saw the Rose score a full house and a bonus Prince Edward Island, with the Harem also dropping the BBC banned” cheeky chappie”, the Rose increased the lead with a round score of 9-4, total 16-10. Round three had the home side flummoxed and they dropped the first three questions of New Zealand penguin, John Lloyd’s swansong as G.B. Tennis coach and John Newton’s Hymn and anthem, the Rose were thankful when only the hymn was picked as a bonus by the visitors. The Harem correctly picked there first two and the bonus point but the dropped the final two questions on Ian Whatmore and the Penguin of the coastal current of South America’s western edge, both were snatched up gratefully by the home side along with the final scrabble squares home question, to limit the damage to a 4-5 round loss. Round four stick or twist had the Rose stick on four when they couldn’t recall Jim’s surname but the Harem scored a good Eight after hesitating on the Soprano’s, to almost recover all the first half losses and leave a halftime score of 24-23.
Round five had the Rose score a full house and the Harem team of Helen Lee, Anne Lee-Nicolson, Eunice Pooler and Tony Webb dropping just the Ninevah question, which wasn’t picked up, 32-29 total score. The two part questions had the home side uncertain of the four pointers and score two points on all and grab a bonus Echidna, the Harem missed just the one but score a four with Wuthering Heights, round score 9-8. The second individual round had the Harem drop just the disciple to score six whilst the Rose team of Kieran, Lee, Jayne and Someone else dropped William Conrad (anyone feel the earth move) and Ludovic Kennedy, but the team Saint, someone else picked up the disciples and Kieran had cleared his earwax earlier. Round score 5-6 for a total of 46-43 going into the last round, which had the Rose team wondering will the lead be enough!
The final round had both teams missing out on the football questions alongside the Alaskan dog sled race, the Dostoevsky illness and his mental torture but the Rose picked up lovely Sophia Loren and the Samoyed Dog, the Harem managed just the high of Robert Mitchum’s past for a round score of 4-2 for a final total of 50-45. The beer round was a close affair also, when the tie break had to be employed and the Harem took the cash on the noisy night, thanks to the millionaire yobs, who’s singing belonged on the z factor.
St. Mary’s OscAr’s had the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village visiting and in a very close hard fought match the home side had gained a eight point advantage at the halfway point but John Heenan reports the visitors showed dogged determination to reduce that advantage and overcome the hosts to take the match by a single point, with a good overall score of 42-43. Almost match of the week. Congratulations Shoulder on your first win.
Ramsbottom Cricket Club had St. Mary’s B’S and the visitors seemed to be on indifferent form but they can take heart with there score matching others in the league as the Cricketers played very well to gain a good advantage and take the match with a 55-43 score and almost team of the week.
The team of the week award this week goes to a side which top scored on the night and there Captain got so carried away he reported a win against another side.
Heap Bridge Social Club had the PackHorse Affetside visiting and recent form dictating that the visitors might just grab a win by a point but the hosts took hold of the match and overcame the Pack team easily with a 60-34 win, to earn the Knights the team of the week award.
Match of the week was very close this week and almost went to this next match also. The Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook climbed up to the Rose and Crown Rammy. Yosemite Sam Reports:- Hairy Hounds ventured up the hill to the new exotic at the Rose and Crown Rammy. The Autumn delight didn’t start things too well, but battle commenced and it was even stevens at 6 all after the first round. A bonus on round two gave the Hairy Hounds a one point advantage. Round three appeared to show Peter Maguire’s decision of electing to go second, to be a good one as no bonus points were scored and the Hairy Hounds took the round 2-8. Round four was a victory to Taylor’s tigers and they sharply clawed back two points, to give a halftime scoreline of Rose rammy 18, Hairy Hounds 23.
Round five questioned the Great Caruso’s earlier running order decision when the Hounds blanked and the Tiger’s answered all but one question, and took the round 11-0. The Two parters were scored at ten apiece, but had the Hairy’s a little stunned, when the home side correctly enforced the rule of not repeating the first part of the question after the second part had been read, it had been forgotten by the Hairy Hounds amongst the litter of time. Round seven had Moira Stewart come up trumps for the Hounds but Cannon caused a misfire for both teams and he wasn’t even playing! Hairy Hounds took the round 7-2 though and closed down the Tiger’s lead to just a point, going into the final round. The final round was a suitably tense affair, with both teams dropping two questions and picking up a bonus, but with the Tiger’s getting the final question right, and the Rose took the match by just a point and a 46-45 score. Post mortem had the Hounds cursing the technicality’s of deciding that Quality street wasn’t an all chocolate assortment because of the Toffee Penny, then the result might have gone the other way, (I think the penny was introduced to the assortment at a later date than when it left Halifax – ed). Food was delayed on the night , so the teams pounced on the beer leg and when that was completed a gorgeous Curry was provided, the Hounds then headed off to the beer festival to spend their winnings.
Match of the week was this final match of the week between Stopes Tavern and their visitors Radcliffe Cricket club. Paul Gardner reports the Elves had built up an impressive lead against the current champions of nine points with just two rounds to go but Phil Dodd mustered his troops to haul that lead back and pull a first class draw out of the hat in what was a super match, with a final score of 46-46.
Week 6 25-10-2010
Another full and very competitive fixture list for the week again has some very mouth-watering contests all the way down the list and it is another week again where obvious winners are somewhat scarce and some results may be a surprise for a few teams.
The Phoenix Knights of Heap Bridge climb up to Holcombe village to visit the Shoulder of Mutton, both teams had excellent wins last week and this match has close written all over the match but the prediction is a home win by a point but a draw is very, very close.
Radcliffe Cricket Club host the Derby this week and entertain St. Mary’s OscAr’s, the visitors have been playing well and have improved with every match and this one will be no exception, so the Cricketers will have to be wary as it will be close, but the home side will prevail however on the night, but perhaps not by many!
Potential match of the week has Stopes Tavern visiting the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook, this one will be very close and a draw could be on the cards how ever the home side may just have the edge by a point only.
SunDial host Rose and Crown Rammy with both teams playing well this one should be a cracker. Helens Harem may just seduce the Taylor’s Tiger’s into defeat though by not many at all, in fact a draw is my favoured prediction.
St. Mary’s B’s have the Rose and Crown Starling visiting and in a hot and cold season for the hosts, the league leading visitors may well be visiting in a hot week and this may well be a win for the home side but only just.
Final match this week has the PackHorse Affetside hosting the Ramsbottom Cricketer’s, the Cricketers have hit form and the PackHorse have slipped up twice lately after a good start. This one is another potential match of the week, but I think the Pack may rally to win but only just!
