PHIL'S COMMENTS

The fifth week of the season has seen everyone donning sowesters and looking for there wet suits as the endless rain and drizzle hits the region.
This week only four matches took place due to the Ramsbottom Cricket Club being on tour to warmer climes and re-arranging the contest against Helen’s Harem from SunDial Walmersley Rd for the 9th January, therefore the report below maybe curtailed a little in content to ensure a fair contest in January.
First match score in was the contest at the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village who were hosting runawayleague leaders and champions Radcliffe Cricket Club and the hosts got off to a shaky start reporting that if it was a boxing match it would have been stopped after the first round, but the Shoulder fought gallantly for the remainder of the tie and as they will see from the scores below there 34-52 loss, it wasn’t an unusual score.
Second match this week saw Taylor’s Tigers of Rose and Crown Ramsbottom return to form against the ever touring Heap Bridge Social club Phoenix Knights. With the tigers purring from the start, the Knights were chasing a faltering cause all match and could not haul back the deficit going down 53-33, and with that return to form the Tigers earn team of the week.
Third game saw the Elves of Stopes Tavern host this weeks Radcliffe Derby against the St. Mary’s B’s and the B’s hit form again, as Paul Gardner’s team got “Battered” by the B’s. Scoreline was a familiar one on the night 35-53.
Final competitive match this week was the contest between the familiar close rivals of PackHorse Affetside and Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook. Yosemite Sam reports:-
For the second time in three seasons, the Hairy Hounds took the Timbuktu route to Affetside for the match against the PackHorse. Captain Peter returning to the fold elected to go first. Hairy Hounds managed to gain a slender 1 point lead at the end of the first round courtesy of there cousins. Round two saw the PackHorse draw level by managing to cleve back the extra point, to give a match score of 9-9. Round three saw the Hairy Hounds, especially Andy Ainsworth, finding the solutions to the questions and according to Sue Pinder in the phone report crucially taking the round 4-10.Round four Stink round saw the Hairy Hounds consolidate that lead further with a 2-4 score. Halftime totals PackHorse 15 Hare and Hounds 23.
A tough round five went marginally to the Hairy Hounds with a 3-5 score. Round six two part round saw both teams score well to post a level 12-12 score and round seven second individual saw both teams level out again at a steady 4-4 giving the Hairy Hounds a ten point advantage of 34-44 going into the final round. Round eight saw the PackHorse side score with their own first two questions but the Hairy Hounds missed out on their own first two and this meant a possible draw could have been on the cards. However the PackHorse then missed there next question deflating the draw possibility and with the Hairy Hounds answering both the final questions, the hosts managed to take the final round 6-4, resulting in a final score of PackHorse Affetside 40 Hare and Hounds 48. The Hairy Hounds also managed to win their first beer leg of the season 15-17. Match of the week award for this tie.
A friendly took place at Rose and Crown Starling, who were playing with themselves this week and the legend Wally Warrington made a very welcome appearance. It turned out that Wally was crucial to his side of Lee and Bob, with his last gasp recall of historic answers, his knowledge helped them to a narrow, lucky and fortunate victory over a gallant and courageous Kieran, who was in terrible and constant niggly back pain throughout the match which badly distracted him, and someone else who was extremly concerned and distracted also, with a 49-41 scoreline, Wally’s warriors going first. Helen was there as brave question master and nurse, the beer leg was won by the gallant and courageous two along with the tie break question.

Week 6 17-10-2011
Week six has the normal five matches taking place and travelling teams will have there snorkels at the ready. It could be an interesting week concerning results for many teams.
Match one see’s the Shoulder of Mutton visiting St. Mary’s B Radcliffe and it could see a very close match however form suggests the hosts will prevail but it will be only just!!!
Second match has the Hare and Hounds retuning home to host Helens Harem of the SunDial Walmersley Rd and with last weeks match for the Harem postponed the Harem will be raring to go but the Hounds form has been steadily improving and the Harem will have to play well to avoid a narrow defeat…….perhaps.
Match three has the Ramsbottom Cricket Club tourists return home from warmer climes and they will have to adjust to the cold weather quickly as they have the Stopes Tavern Elves blowing in, and in a close contest that this it is likely to be, the visitors may just have enough to win but a tie could be close also. Could be match of the week.
Fourth match has the tigers of Rose and Crown Ramsbottom visiting the current champions and runaway league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club with the leaders being unbeaten and seemingly on a different level this season so far the visitors may well look at this match as a daunting task but the Tigers can growl loud and hard, if they do this the match will be match of the week and the tigers will grab the points. Close game and maybe an upset could be on the cards!!!!
Final match this week is the derby match at Rose and Crown Starling where the visitors are PackHorse Affetside, with a single round causing major problems for the visitors last week and the hosts having problems with there own form this season, this will be a closely fought contest and the visitors could have the edge…..
Heap Bridge Social Club are having a week off and the Knights will be servicing there tour bus.
