Week 6
With deja vu being the watchword over the weekend in sport, it must have seemed like that for the match of the week and the Stopes Tavern Team. As for the second consecutive week Paul Gardener’s Taverner’s lost by a single point in a mammoth battle, this time against the visiting Sun Dial Walmersley Rd.
The Dial team know very well what it is like to lose by just the odd question also after making it a regular feature of their matches last season, so the girls must have kept Roger’s excitement in check, and Paul Gardner is probably cussing the Taverner’s luck after losing 43-44.
Just being pipped for match of the week is the game hosted by Rose and Crown Bury who had the leagues strongest side (because tall the other teams are on there shoulders) Swan A team gliding in. The Swan’s must have had a shot of last year’s vintage tonic before setting off as everyone was stunned with a full house for both teams in the first round. The shock was so great that the Rose, back to full strength this week, slipped behind in the second round and even zeroed the third but an eight in the stick or twist fourth round saw the lead cut back to just one point at the half. The second period saw the tonic wear steadily off for the visitors and they lost the lead early. Ian’s Rose Bury team eventually winning by a margin of ten points 49-39, but the Swan A Team earns this week’s team of the week accolade.
Rose and Crown Ramsbottom were hosting the unbeaten league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club this week. Peter Taylor’s side has been on top form recently and a win would not have been a surprise but Phil Dodd’s Cricketers are in an even richer vein of form and they tipped the previously purring home side’s basket over, with a 47-60 win.
The inconsistent title holders Rose and Crown Starling had the second place side Packhorse Affetside tying up for this weeks derby match. The visitors side of Sue and Mike Pinder, James Perkin and welcome addition to the team of Karen McMahon has brought a more consistent start to the season without slipping up as they did last year and have fully deserved there second place in the league with some excellent results. However the Rose Starling has had a spluttering engine which fires into life one week and stalls the next. This week, thanks to Anne Thompson and Terry Brierley along with the legend Wally Warrington stirring and a helpfully imbalanced fourth round eight pointer, the hosts had a ten point half time lead and with that factor the visitors were always swimming against the tide succumbing to a score of 57-45.
Heap Bridge Phoenix Knights and the Swan B had a free week.
Week 7 Monday Dec 3rd
The league being ultra competitive this year has contrived to throw up some very hard to predict fixtures this week but the outstanding fixture and game of the week could be the Cricket Club hosting Rose Bury. Phil Dodd’s home team are gaining a strangle hold on the title but Ian Openshaw’s side desire for silverware this year requires they have to bring the high flying Cricketer’s to earth, this is the best chance they will have but they have to play better than recent form suggests. A close home win may be the easier prediction.
Swan A have the Phoenix Knights charging in and they may eager to win after a weeks rest, but if the form of last week holds there could be a surprise in store for the visitors as Mavis is brewing a stronger tonic at the moment. Close but maybe….. ,perhaps……, almost again.
Packhorse have the rested Swan B side visiting, Sue will have had the colts and fillies in training this week after falling at Starling Turn so the Swans could be in for a backlash but Alec will want to keep his sides quiet progress up the table going. A close home win but only just.
Rose Starling visit the SunDial if the Rose wear the champions hat they will be hard to beat, but they have taken to wearing a bobblehat this year and have sometimes looked a right load of bennies so with the Diallers luck turning the corner the girls could just guide the home side to a close win but …………… ummmm not likely.
Rose Rammy and Stopes Taverner’s have a free week to regroup and tend their wounds. Suggestions for raffle prizes are also required from league sides, in time for the approaching Christmas Quiz Night only two weeks away.
