PHIL'S COMMENTS

The winds of change have been blowing hard across the north this week and they have took on a target in the form of last seasons champions Rose and Crown Starling this week as it looks as though the title defence has floudered in the wet weather before the league has even got half way.
Match of the week however belongs to Rose and Crown Rammy who were visiting the Carol singing Taverners but high flying Paul Gardners men from lapland found the evening to be a little to much and they ran out of oxygen right at the crucial moment in a very exciting match to lose by the odd question with a score of 44-48.
The team of the week though this week is the very deserving Swan and Railway a’s who hosted the visitors in the Radcliffe Derby namely the league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club. The visiting side never ran away with the match and in a high scoring affair just managed to pull away in the final rounds. Mavis’s tonic must be back at full strength so watch out allcomers.
Swan and Railway B’s have been lighting up the scoreboard lately with some very high scores and this weeks was no exception but you wouldn’t have guessed so at the half way point as the scores were Swan 22 and the home side, the Pack Horse Affetside team were in touch with 20 points but for Sue and Mike the sun drenched beaches of Minorca must have seemed an age away from the rain drenched wind swept roads of the hill as they Pack lads scored just twelve points in the second half to go down to a 61-32 point defeat.
The SunDial and Barney and the Harem had the gentlemen of Heap bridge social club visiting but after last weeks disaster the visitors must have been in training as the home harem went down to a 36-51 loss. By the way is the published website score for last week the genuine result scoreline as it still hasn’t been completely confirmed?
The final match this week saw the champions from last year visit the high flying Hairy Hound s and in a .........oh dear the fire alarm has gone off more tomorrow.
Oh I am really sorry the notes got burnt on the match. All I can remember is that it was really close and the home side of Ian Openshaw, Peter Maguire, Dave Wright and Andy Ainsworth had the luck of the draw and all the Rose questions were really hard. It really was a game of two halves and the Rose lost both.
The first round start of well enough when both teams could have got a full house but the rose didn’t 8-6. Second round individual was again close but the hairy hounds picked up bonus’s with eurovision song contest fan, who I think was Peter scored heavily. Terry Brierley for the visitors new his motorcycling cooks and the round end 6-5 for a total of 14-11. The Rose slipped a further point behind on round three to trail 21-17 and a gamble for the visitors in round four failed and the half ended 23-17. Close and competative and if The Legend had heard his individual question correctly possibly a little closer but we will be fitting an extendalbe microphone for his hearing aids, although Jill’s voice was loud and clear all evening for the rest of us.Round five was a disaster for the Rose and only 2 points was added whilst the excellent Hairy Hounds side forged ahead by a further 10 points. Round Six saw the first of only two rounds all match, that the probable former champions won all evening bringing the score to 41-32. Second individuals saw another disaster for the visitors with only someone troubling the scorer with his knowledge of a certain singers misdemeanours. With that the lead for the Hairy Hounds was unassailable they relaxed and the rose took the last round for a final score of 53-41 and excellent win for the Hairy Hounds who if there form holds will be challenging the leaders all season.

Week 7 Monday 9th Nov
Match of the week this week looks on paper to be the derby fixture between Rose and Crown Rammy and the Hairy Hounds with both teams coming off the back of excellent wins and both teams having a run of form this looks to be a very close contest but the Hairy Hounds might just have the very best of the form at the moment however Taylors Tigers could be the one’s to upset that form book.
Heap bridge Phoenix knights have the Swan and Railway A’s rolling in, and on this weeks form alone the game is going to be tight and very competative if the knights are on their guard they may just win but I think the swan A’s may have tonic power and will steal it in the final round.
The new boys at Rammy Cricketers have a quick return match against the Pack Horse Affetside and after the mauling by the heavyscoring Swan b’s this week the wound will have hardly healed and they will be opened up again, the Pack may run the home side close but they will still be bowled out by the home side again I believe.
Swan and Railway B’s host Barney and the Harem from the SunDial with the Swan’s in terrific scoring form at the moment they could score high again this week but any slip ups and the SunDial could benefit home win but it may not be clear cut.
Rose Starling host Christmas loving Stopes Tavern and it may be the best time to visit the rose as last years champions Starling look to be out of the race for this years title already.Stopes wil want to bounce straight back from a defeat against the other rose and the money is on an away win.
The Radcliffe Cricketers are attempting to figure out the Duckworth Lewis Scoring system this week.
A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details for all teams are on this website.
