PHIL'S COMMENTS

A full competitive fixture list this week saw the scores to be quite similar in a few matches as the typical Autumn weather returns to the area after the cold snap. The printing error on the questions saw teams employ at least one or a couple of spare questions provided on the evenings quiz sheet.
First game this week was the visit of Rose and Crown Ramsbottom to the SunDial Walmersley Rd and Helen’s Harem facing into the Tiger’s stair. In posting the match score , they reported the questions as being “the most one sided set of questions ever, “ not recognised at St. Mary’s when put to both teams playing there and it was Taylor’s tigers who tamed the Harem on the night with a score of 56-30.
PackHorse Affetside had the Ramsbottom Cricketers climbing the hill and the Cricketers seem to have hit a vein of form as the PackHorse tripped up again with a score of 42-53.
The potential match of the week on paper was at the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook who had the Stopes Tavern Elves visiting Yosemite Sam reports:-
Monday night Quiz rolls round again in what appeared to be a return to normality, the Hairy hounds bus with the normal chauffeurs and crew arrived, the drone from under the bonnet removed.
The back room at the hounds once again being the venue, as the festival bar and all the lovely drink was sadly removed, post festivities. The Stopes Taverner’s arrived for the second time in October having trounced the Hairy Hounds in an earlier friendly. The usual question mistress Jill returned for the event and Andy Ainsworth took up his position in the Hairy’s team. The visiting Elves had a re-shuffle of their pack of cards when Skipper Paul barged in having being boating in Skipton and he decided to stir the waters even more by going second. The Elves bargees then proceeded to miss the boat in the first round and blanked, the Hairy Hounds picked up three bonus’s to score pick up a 9-0 score. The individual started well for the Hairy’s, with Uncle David’s performance maximum on Napoleon. The Elves missed the dodgy wives, and the Hounds finished the round with a 9-4 score. Round three went 8-6 to the Hairy Hounds, while both teams plumbed for four in the Stick or twist giving a half time score of 30-14.
Round five ended up fives all round and the two parters went 10-8 to the Hounds, who scored a maximum four appropriately on the dog licence. Round seven saw the Hounds get no questions wrong for the fourth time on the night giving them a round score of 8-4. Both teams dropped a question in round Eight, but it was the Elves that picked up the bonus to finally win a round 6-7. However it was too little, too late for a comeback on a night where the Elves couldn’t touch the Hounds with a barge pole. Final score Hare and Hounds 59 Stopes Tavern 38. It had been a night of spares with Jill managing to keep the quiz flowing despite one and a half questions missing. The Elves Boat people went home with most of the money on the night by winning the beer leg, but Yosemite Sam swept up as the Swamp king. Team of the week award goes to the high scoring Hairy Hounds.
The northern side of the league venues were full this week as the Heap Bridge social club were the visitors at the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe village and the knights were on top form as they swept up the points and the match with a score of 30-56.
St Mary’s OscAr’s travelled the short distance to the Radcliffe Cricket Club for this weeks Radcliffe derby and although the visitors scored well they couldn’t hold the Cricketers who returned to top form. The Cricketers scored heavily but St. Mary’s also scored well on the night and the final score 56-41.
Final match report of the round was the visit of Rose and Crown Starling to St. Mary’s Radcliffe to play the B’s team of Alex Fontaine, Alan Clayton, John Hill and Gordon Hubert. The Rose went first and both teams picked up the initial questions thanks to Alan Clayton’s “Neighbours” knowledge, however the home side blanked the rest of the answers of Forbidden city, Emile Heskey and Baltimore. The Rose picked up the Chinese bonus but dropped the “Leaning tower of Pisa” to take the round 2-7. Round two saw the visitors pick the wrong categories in the individuals, only Kieran scored with the Napoleon Category, the Saint’s scored three’s with the road signs and the wives and both teams missed out on the songs. 6-3 round score for a total of 8-10. Round three saw only Mt McKinley stump both sides, ( the home side had talked themselves out of it), for a 6-8 score. Both teams scored four in the stick or twist round, when both teams wracked there brains over the eight pointer but plumbed for safety. Halftime score 18-22.
Round five opened with both teams scoring on the first but the visitors dropped Howard Winstone which the saints snapped up for a bonus, however the printing error of half the Spinks question missing had the question master stumped before he picked a sporting spare which was missed by both teams. Both teams missed the final two answers on there own questions but the Saint’s marched on with Sonny Rollins for a bonus. Round score 6-4 for totals of 24-26. Round six saw both teams play safe for two points on all answers, however both teams missed the Minehead holiday camp, overall scores were now level on 32 each. Round seven individual saw a reverse of fortune for the home side when they chose the wrong categories and the visitors scooped up three bonuses whilst dropping just the Annie Lennox fishy answer. The home side did score on the fishy question which was totally missing on the sheet, only the answer gave the guest question master of someone else a clue to form a question, which Alan Clayton picked up. Round score 2-9 for totals of 34 -39. Final round saw the home side drop the first two answers of “Mumbo-Jumbo and Royal Ascot”, then pick up the final two, the visitors dented a full house with a dropped “Gold Cup” which the home team repaired for a final bonus, the only bonus scored in the round and total score on the night of 39-47 and a win, where just the individual rounds made the difference between the teams, for the Rose and Crown Starling team of Kieran, Bob, Jayne and Anne, who also snatched the beer leg for a rare money win this season, and the match was this weeks match of the week.
Finally there has been a point of order raised over last weeks repeating of the first part of the two part questions and the Hairy Hounds have rightly proven that the league rules do not rule out the possibility of the first part being repeated after the second has been read. I apologise for my error in agreeing the first part cant be repeated.
Whilst we are on rules, I have received quite a few teams (no-names) comments on the time taken to answer by teams (no-names). Some teams are taking a very long time to give any answer, please will all teams note that while no-one wants to enforce the strict timings of years gone by, of 30 seconds and ten for a pass over, all team captains are requested to provide an answer, with the Question masters discretion on when he requests the answer to be given, after a maximum of one minute and a maximum of fifteen seconds for a pass over, even if a question is repeated, this is so teams can finish the quiz on the same day it started and wont spoil the evenings entertainment, the quiz is a night of enjoyment as well as competition.

Week 7 25-10-2010
Another full fixture list for the week has most matches visiting Ramsbottom and the northern reaches of the league again with only the Radcliffe Derby at St. Mary’s the exception, but it makes no difference as some very competitive matches are on offer.
The war of the Roses part one takes place this week at Rammy and Taylor’s tigers have there tails up after last weeks high scoring win and they may have an advantage over the visiting Starling side that top the league. Close match but home win.
A top match is in prospect at the Cricket Club Rammy who have the Phoenix knight’s tour bus parking up. Both teams scored heavily last week and this could be a score that goes down to the wire, a draw may be in the offing but the predicted result is an away win just.
The Radcliffe Derby has the Stopes Tavern Elves visiting St.Mary’s OscAr’s and they could be in for a surprise as the A’s have been improving with every game whilst missing out on the result, is this match going to open there seasons account….. on last weeks scores maybe, it will be close but the visitors may just have the edge.
The Shoulder of Mutton host league champions Radcliffe Cricketer’s, Phil Dodd has the champions firing smoothly again it seems and this one may seem daunting to the home side but if they play as confidently as the first few games this could be close and a surprise wont be far away, however on form an away win is predicted.
Hare and Hounds have the SunDial and Helen’s harem visiting to challenge the hounds. With only last weeks result spoiling a low points conceded record the visitors will not want to give anything away and may get back to winning ways. Close match potential match of the week ….. controversially, away win just!
Final match is at the PackHorse Affetside and St.Mary’s B’s visiting. Scores from last week dictate a close match. the home side will want to stop there run of defeats but the visitors held the league leaders for six rounds last week and an away win is predicted. but the scores will be close.
