PHIL'S COMMENTS

The sixth week of the season has all and sundry throwing out anchors and raising periscopes as wind and driving rain makes our warm and welcoming venues even more attractive.
The week has a full card of matches and in the first, the visit of SunDial Walmersley road our reporter Yosemite Sam has turned out to be, would you know it, quite a rustic poet:-

Yosemite went to a riot in Rome,
But things were worse when he got home,
Helen’s crew arrived at Holcombe Brook.
Opted for second and got a duck,
Six for Hounds with their opening bound.
Six-four to Dial on the Second round.
All sixes again a draw round three
16-12 it happened to be.
A stinking Pimpernel so Hounds stuck on one,
Sun got three of Five! questions, a comeback was on.
17-16 the score at half-time,
a break for a beer, a smoke and a rhyme.
As for Round Five what could be, perhaps
2-10 to the Sun as the Hounds collapse.
4-7 in Six, continued the rout.
6-9 in seven, the Hounds were out.
A draw in the eighth, 6 all the score
35-48, the Hounds shown the door.
Beer leg, a draw in all but name
For tie break both teams answered the same.
SunDial took the points, another win for them
Helens Harem, half of whom are men!!!

Second match score in was the contest at the unbeaten league leaders and champions Radcliffe Cricket Club who had Ramsbottom Rose and Crown visiting and the visiting Taylor’s Tigers were overwhelmed by the Phil Dodd’s hosts with them taking firm charge of the match in the first half and posting another substantial score of 66-34.
Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village were visiting St. Mary’s Social Club B’s Radcliffe with last weeks comments of being down and out in the first round, the Shoulder showed no fear this week against high flying St. Mary’s, and took the game with an excellent score of 45-56 and earn the Team of the week award but only just…
The visit of Stopes Tavern to the Ramsbottom Cricket Club gave rise to an exciting and close contest with Paul Gardner reporting the match being “nip and tuck all the way”, the contest went down to the last question on the night with the hosts pinching the match by a single point 45-44, and earn match of the week award.
Final match this week was the “local” derby between Rose and Crown Starling and The PackHorse Affetside, with the visitors showing some good early form in the league and holding a high position in the table, the hosts who have had an indifferent start to this years matches were very much second favourites for the match.
The PackHorse elected to go first and with a little hesitation overcame the first question, as did the hosts. Second question caused consternation for the visitors and no answer, along with the home side, who also passed the bonus both sides recognised the proverbial answer from the translation of the Rubyyat of Omar Khayyam, except for someone else who hadn’t got a bloody clue. The Rose correctly answered there own second monarchy question and the PackHorse also grabbed there own monarch with there third. The Rose though were stumped with there own quote from Pope’s “Essay on Criticism” with the bonus going begging also both sides aptly missed the answer of “A little learning is a dangerous thing”. Final questions of the round saw the Pack miss the Olympic runner by just one letter (m instead of r), and the hosts snapped up a bonus point Packer. The Rose dropped the state capital President question and the PackHorse missed the bonus. Score 5-4
Second round individual had categories of Defunct Supermarkets, Computer Data, Musical Brothers and Literary Lake District. Both sides missed just one question each and both were picked up for bonus points, the Rose’s Kieran missed going to the shops with Safeway’s and the PackHorse missed the Beach boy’s Wilson Brother’s. Round score 7-7. Third round had both sides missing the first questions, the PackHorse missing the loony question on Divers the family of birds that is and the Rose missing the thought of Charles Laughton, and the thespian PackHorse picked up the only bonus point scored in the round. Both of the next two questions were answered but the final questions both went pointless, as the thespians missed Richard Burton and the Rose hanging a gooney bird Albatross round there neck. 4-5 score. Round four stink round seems to have caught everyone out if you went first as the PackHorse did, with the single pointer negotiated quickly that dastardly flower Scarlet Pimpernel stumped them and only a single point was registered. The Rose ran quickly to four but had to stick as no one knew the last service of the day. The Printing Error on the questions may have caught out a few teams going second this round!
Half time totals Rose and Crown 20 PackHorse 17.
Round five saw only one question missed, with the Wolf’s lair stumping the PackHorse team of Sue and Mike Pinder, James Perkin and Marcus Elder, but the Rose snapped up the bonus for a round score of 9-6. Round six two parters saw both teams play safe on question one but the second had the Rose score a maximum four and the PackHorse go for a maximum but miss out on there Scorsese film, with the Rose having a guess for three and missing also it went begging especially when the second part of the question was heard. Safety first for the Rose on the next two questions but the PackHorse missed there politician for four and the Rose picked up a safe single bonus point with the name of the speaker in the House of Commons. Round score 11-4 for total scores of 40-27. Round seven second individuals had categories of 60’s Folk Singers, Previous Football Homes,20TH Century Novels and Educational Breaks. The home Rose side had them all pick correct categories initially but then someone else and Terry swapped which turned out to be the wrong choice partially. Both Bob and Sue answered first ok but Someone else tied himself in knots trying to remember Ayresome Park which James snapped up for a bonus along with his own. Third had Terry miss Casino Royale and Marcus miss the Godfather but both grabbed bonus points, Kieran and Mike both unsurprisingly grabbed there own question for a round score of 5-8 and totals of 45-35.
Final round saw the Rose answer their first but the PackHorse visibly lost heart when they missed there own and the Rose grabbed the bonus with only Brown Sauce missed by the Rose but grabbed for a bonus by the Packhorse, the round score was a draw 7-7 but the overall final score was Rose and Crown 52 PackHorse 42. The beer leg was grabbed by the PackHorse and the Tie break went to Kieran with both sides making light work of the sandwiches the evening was complete.
The Heap Bridge Phoenix Knights had a week of to service there tour bus ready for a snowy climb perhaps next week!!!

Week 7 24-10-2011
Week seven has the only four matches taking place with Stopes Tavern against the Hare and Hounds being postponed due to a half term holiday rush and so it has been rearranged for the 9 th January provisionally.
It could be an interesting week for the remaining teams and surprise results are on the cards. Match one has the Shoulder of Mutton visiting local rivals Rose and Crown Ramsbottom in the Rammy Derby this week and it should see a very close match, with Taylor’s Tigers going down heavily to the leaders last week following the previous week with Shoulder of Mutton doing the same will they follow suit and bounce back, probably but this match has a draw written on it or a single point either side win!!
! Match two has Ramsbottom Cricket Club hosting the St. Mary’s b’s with St. Mary’s succumbing to a home defeat last week and Rammy Cricket Club having a narrow win both with the same final total scores this match looks on paper to be extremely close but I suspect the visitors may just and only just have the edge by one point maybe,,,
Third match has the PackHorse hosting the freshly serviced tour bus of Heap Bridge Social Club another close match is expected and both teams may prevail so a draw is my fence sitting prediction.
Fourth match has SunDial Walmersley Rd being visited by Rose and Crown Starling with the SunDial having a good win last week and the Rose also winning this will be a close match and the Harem may well be victorious… just.
Final match would have been Stopes tavern against Hare and Hounds and with both sides having indifferent form this would have been very close at this stage of the season and a draw would have been the prediction.
Radcliffe Cricket Club are having a week off and hopefully losing form.
