PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week 7 The windy weather certainly filled one teams sails this week, as the reigning champions Rose and Crown Starling unfurled some scoring form at long last on their visit to the unfortunate recipients SunDial Walmersley Road... The Dial team of Helen Lee, Dave O’Brien, Eunice Pooler and Roger Amer played well on the night and won both of the individual rounds but could not match the heavy scoring visitors in the other rounds, a zero in the stick or twist round didn’t help the home side either and Roger has put himself in Quarantine for his imminent visit to Venice by getting that answer wrong also . The visiting team of Keiran Goldsbrough, Lee Sawbridge, Bob Selby and the Legend Wally Warrington pulled out a fourteen point advantage at the half of 18 -32 and ran out 41-66 point winners to deservedly earn this weeks team of the week accolade. The unbeaten league leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club had the potentially testing challenge of Rose and Crown Bury visiting and although Ian Openshaws side put up a good fight, the Cricketers are looking to scatter all comers back to the boundary ropes this season as they continue to hit everyone for six in this week’s match of the week 47-40. The Packhorse Affetside had the rested Swan and Railway Radcliffe B’s visiting and it seems as though the Pack team are having a tough few weeks and are beginning to slip down the table, as in a relatively low scoring game they capitulated again to the understated but ever progressing Swan’s 35-41. Final match this week, Rose and Crown Ramsbottom and Stopes Taverner’s are on a free week was the Swan and Railway A’s hosting the Heap Bridge Social Club this match was brought forward due to a round ball fixture inconsiderately clashing with it and even had the league secretary as guest question-master for the night, the visiting Phoenix lads of Barrie Birch, Neil Jones, Steve Henry and Derek Lord are starting to have some consistent away form and in a very close competitive match, the Swan side of John Harris, Louise Hardman, John Heenan and Julie Keenan trailed by just a point at the halfway mark. During the second half the Swans, with Julie in feisty form for home side, managed to slip up a couple of times to allow the visitors to gain a hold and as a result the Swans were chasing the match. The final score on an enjoyable night was 37-46 . Hopefully all teams noticed the deliberate mistake in the national parks question and adjusted the answer accordingly. Week 8 Monday Dec 10th This week’s match of the week but only just has Rose Rammy visiting the Phoenix Nights Heap Bridge Social Club with Peter Taylor’s side re-grouping after there mauling by the league leaders they will want to get back to winning ways but the phoenix water rats are tough opposition and it could go either way. If Margaret and Sue on form, Rammy may edge it but I expect the home sides and perhaps Neville’s extra strength to just pip it. A close encounter could also occur at the Swan and Railway where the B’S entertain the SunDial, if the visitors can persuade landlord Stuart Wolsey to travel they could have the strength to win otherwise with Roger walking round the sites of Venice, he may be missed. The Rose Starling have the Stopes Taverner’s visiting and with the homeside reckoning that Wally’s computer breakdown has rejuvenated his reading and form, Paul Gardener’s side may, even with the weeks rest, be in for a tough night. The visitor’s however can be a little un-predictable so the Rose cannot afford to sit on last weeks result. Final match is the titanic battle at the Cricket club Radcliffe where close rivals Swan A’s will be gliding in, with Julie in top form this could go close. The unbeaten runaway league leaders could be in for a shock, Phil Dodd’s men had better beware and where is my medication. Ah that’s done it, well, you never know do you? The Rose Bury are on a free and will be preparing the Christmas Do Quiz Questions and Sue will have the Packhorse team schooling on there recent show of form during their free week. However a new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. The Rose Starling have a tentative challenge in the offing for there free week. Suggestions for top raffle prize are also required from league sides, in time for the approaching Christmas Quiz Night only a week away.
