PHIL'S COMMENTS

Another Autumn week saw everybody up to there neck in wet leaves as the trees are all shedding at once but the competitive action in the league carries on although teams found the going heavy in competition also. Match of the week was easy this week as you will see in the reports below. The League also received an apology from Century 21 for the printing error of last week it seems paper feed overlap in the printer the most likely cause as further test prints came out perfect.
First game report this week was the visit of the SunDial Walmersley Rd to the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook Yosemite Sam reports:-
Week 7 and the SunDial succeeded in manoeuvring their way to Holcombe Brook (not helped by the continental lorry driver who had decided to block Kay Brow) and despite the fact that the clocks had gone back, and it was dark, they managed to arrive in time for the start. The Quiz started when Jill had finally managed to park her car, and Helen made the decision that the Harem goes second, however she immediately regretted that, when the SunDial had three unanswered questions in the first round and it finished up 8-2 to the Hairy Hounds. In the first individual round Long John Silver ran aground on the large island and the birdman missed the Turdi question, the Harem had comeback to win the second round by a point, which they carried on forward in that theme, to win rounds three and the stink or twist round four by scores of 5-6, 6-7 and 1-2 respectively to peg back the lead gained by Hairy Hounds in the first round and to give a half time score of 20-17.
The half time beer did more to refresh the Hairy Hounds than the Harem, and the Hounds won round five 6-3. The two parters also went 9-6 to the Hairy Hounds, with no team managing to sniff at a four point answer. Round Seven individuals saw Yosemite Sam take the women in the bible, but that’s because he’s got the big hat (northern pronunciation), SunDial’s only nourishment in the round was from their pudding and the Hairy’s took the round 5-2. A return to the usual difficult round eight saw a 3-2 win for the Hounds and that gave a final score of Hare and Hounds 43 SunDial 30. The beer leg was taken by the Hounds and the Hitchcock sweep was divided between Tony from the Harem and Andy from the Hounds who were both just one year out!
The Radcliffe Derby saw St. Mary’s Radcliffe A’s host the Stopes Tavern and the home side’s overall form continued to confound them as John Heenan reports:- Despite being in the lead at half time St. Mary’s A managed to snatch defeat from the jaw’s of a dreamed victory by losing 28-38 to the Stopes Tavern Elves! Oh well back to the drawing board!
Ramsbottom Cricket Club hosted the Heap Bridge Phoenix Knights tour bus and in a difficult match where both teams found the wicket very sticky with no bounce, the visiting Knights took the low scoring close match 34- 39 with the resultant text comment of “what a stinker” from the home side.
Match of the week this week was decided as soon as this result was posted, PackHorse Affetside had St. Mary’s B visiting and both teams played excellent throughout the match with neither side giving any leeway to the other side, in a high scoring encounter compared to other scores the result was a 45-45 draw and match of the week, team of the week goes to both teams jointly also for both there return to form.
Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe village had the formidable opponents in the shape of league champions Radcliffe Cricket Club who are showing good form of late, but the debutant hosts gave a good account of themselves again and held the champions for a time only for the second half to have the Cricket club escape to win 30-47.
The final report this week is the visit to the Rammy hill of Rose and Crown Starling for the war of the Rose and Crowns. Taylor’s Tiger’s home venue has undertaken changes since last visited and the games room was the new home of the quiz night. The visitors who had two ailing team members rising from there sick beds to play, chose to go first and the game began, a slight interruption from Petula Clark on the Juke Box made things loud for a second but the visitors took a full house with the crescent train to New Orleans and Benzene proving beyond both teams for a 4-8 score. Round 2 individuals saw only the Thrush family stumping someone else to spoil a perfect score, the tigers were purring with an 8-6 round score and an overall 12-14 total. Round three saw the pendulum swing to the Rose Starling again when they dropped just the spooler answer which wasn’t picked up for a bonus but picked up there own bonuses of Caligula, Queen of Spades and Free cell, scoreline in the round was 2-9 for a total of 14-23. The fourth round stick or twist suddenly reverted to last years stink or twist round and the Winter Daydream of Tchaikovsky stumped the Rose Starling to force a stick on one whilst after a deliberation by the tiger’s the winter queen of Bohemia had them stumped for four and halftime totals of 18-24 reached quickly on the night.
Round five saw both teams pick the first question then drop the next two questions on Dadaism, and tour down under for the home side, with Being human and Cleo laine missed for the visitors which was pick up as a bonus by the Tigers side of Peter Taylor, Sue Booth, Margaret Chamberlain and Martin Baggoley, Twilight was returned for a bonus to the Rose Starling who then scored with a final Bauhaus for a round score of 3-5 and 21-29 total. The two part round six had the Tigers going for four on the first question and missing out with the same answer the visitors had thought of namely “The Dustbinmen” and the second part gave the visitors an “it ain’t half hot mum” point. The home side missed the “gorse” bush for two also and it was picked up for a point by the Starling side who had played all there own questions for two points each and a round score of 4-10.
Round seven individuals both teams took the first pudding questions. Taylor’s Tigers missed the Shat-al-Arab boat, which was picked up by someone else who then missed the Gironde. Women in the bible had that Jezebel defying both team but Terry picked Delilah for Starling, final questions saw both England goalies save the points from each sides own questions but the Tigers picked up the ancient Wolves glove man for a bonus. Five points each scored on the round. Final round saw both teams crash land at Le Bourget airport but the tigers picked up Cargoes for a bonus lift. Both teams scored the second questions and the Tigers also caught Sea fever on the third, the Starlings just flew into Goose bay instead of Gander on their third which wasn’t gobbled up for a bonus. Clapton Havels and his Haversion Canels had both teams locked out but Grovesnor was picked by the Starlings for a round score of 5-4 to the Tigers, but the match had slipped away from them in the two parters and Rose Starling took the match with a top scoring 35-48 result.
The beer leg also went the Starlings way and a delicious hot pie and pea supper was enjoyed by all. The Starlings Anne and Jayne had both hauled themselves out of sick beds to play on the night and many thanks go to them.

Week 8 8-11-2010
Another full fixture list for the week has all matches avoiding Ramsbottom this week.
All matches this week have potential match of the week written all over them.
First match this week has league leaders Rose and Crown Starling hosting Rammy Cricket Club and with the visitors stuttering form this season saw a loss last week so this week they should be up for a win, the Rose have had close games all season and this one will be no different, possible draw but an away win by a point!
Heap Bridge Phoenix Knight’s have the St. Mary’s OscAr’s visiting and this has potential match of the week written all over it, form guide says the knight’s but I suspect the visitors will run the hosts very close and may just gain a win by a point.
Stopes Tavern Elves host Rose and Crown Rammy and Taylor’s Tiger’s in a predicted very close encounter it won’t surprise me to see the result not decided until the last question, who will win? The Elves will defeat the Tigers by the odd point…. Maybe!
St. Mary’s Radcliffe B’s have the Shoulder of Mutton visiting and controversially I predict the visitors may just take this as the hosts never keep up there winning form for two weeks in a row this season! Very close though could be a draw again.
SunDial Walmersley Rd have the PackHorse tying up on the rail and this will be another hard fought match. The Harem and the Pack were vying for top spot early in the season and this could go all the way to the final question also, home win… just.
Potential match of the week also for the final game, has the Hairy Hounds visiting the Radcliffe Cricket Club and if the visitors play to form then they may just overcome the current champions although they have to play with confidence as Phil Dodd’s men will have had there weetabix earlier. Close and a draw won’t be far off but an away win….. just.
